aeerwerw
Hi there! I am a very new modder, attempting to get my first couple of mods working in The Witcher 3, however I'm running into an issue where I do not have any of the deployment methods available to me. My system is is Windows 10 x64, and have 16GB of RAM, and the error message I receive is: "can't write to output directory, the current user account needs to be given write permission". I am using an administrator account and have checked to make sure I have write permissions on the folder in question. Another important thing to note is that I ran the application as administrator by complete accident for the first time, and have since read that it was a very bad idea to do so, however upon reinstalling, i appear to be having the same issues! If you require any other information, please let me know and will be happy to oblige, however my knowledge of systems and the way they work are quite limited. Thank you for reading! HadToRegister
You need to have The Witcher 3 installed on the same drive as the game and your appdata folder, and your Mod Staging folder, so normally Drive C:\

Would I run into issues if I was to change the location drive of my appdata folder?

The safest thing to do is move your game and mod staging folder to the C:\ drive I know you CAN move the appdata folder, but I don't recommend it, maybe someone like Augusta Calidia can help you with that, she had hers on her D:\ drive

Thank you again for your help!
AugustaCalidia
Here's Witcher 3 advice Pickysaurus gave me recently. As of the latest version of Vortex, hardlink deployment only works if Witcher 3 is on your C:\ drive (or the same drive as your "My Documents" folder). This is because Vortex now deploys files to the Documents folder. So this is treated like an extension of the game folder. Symlink deployment should still be available unless you permissions on your PC are funky and don't allow the creation of Symlinks. I had been unable to use any deployment method but symlinks. The reason was that I had the game and its mod staging folder on drive C:\ but the Documents folder on drive D:\. Once I moved the Documents folder to C:\, hardlink and move deployment became available. HTR, my apologies if i misspoke somewhere, but i have never had my appdata folder on any drive but the C:\ drive. In agreement with you, I do not recommend moving the appdata folder. HadToRegister
FWIW, in my copy of Vortex 1.1.15, I have Witcher 3 installed on D:\, and have all three methods of deploymentWhich is just one of many reasons why I'm STILL waiting to upgrade. aeerwerw
Do you think at some point in the future with an update, I will be able to get these mods to work the way i want them to, with the same game location i'm currently using? Or is this another point to add to my list of reasons to invest in a larger SSD for my C drive?
rmm200
Is this restriction limited to Witcher 3?I never noticed it because my Documents and Games are both on D:.
AugustaCalidia
Is this restriction limited to Witcher 3?I never noticed it because my Documents and Games are both on D:. The deployment requirement about the location of the Documents folder and games definitely applies to Witcher 3. However, I had no trouble with my Bethesda games when the Documents folder was on D:\ drive and everything else was on C:\ drive. As for other games beyond the set I mention here, I have no idea if this requirement applies.
