Lawlacaust
To get the most out of dawnguard should you complete the main story line first then start it or just mix it in? And if i mix it in will it still be lore friendly for me?
Kayyyleb
For practicality you have to get pretty far in the main story to finish dawnguard anyways since you need the elder scroll and there's only like 2 missions after you get it. As for lore-friendly, you can mix them up and it flows well enough since they don't really reference each other at all.
VictoriaG
Whilst it's true you need the same elder scroll in both the main quest and Dawngaurd (if you have it, you can go get it anytime regardless of your progress) you don't really need to do the main quest straight off, only really if you want to meet lots of dragons. Zalman1337
I prefer to progress the main quest until I master Unrelenting Force. Then, I finish the Dawnguard questline to stop the annoying vampire attacks.
Georgiegril
I've played it a couple ways. The first time I had already finished about everything before getting Dawnguard. This time, I started out with the Dawnguard.esm running. I did the two quests more or less simultaneously, and that worked out fine.I don't think there is any real "need" to play t any particular way, just whatever suits your fancy. I'd say your decision on when to do the civil war quests has a lot more actual effect on the game play than Dawnguard.
