is Fallout new Vegas better than Fallout 3?

Fallout New Vegas:

Better game play mechanics

Better story (imo)

Better characters spread through out the game

Higher quality companion mods

Amazing quest mods

Rather active community still

Fallout 3:

Better area design

Larger amount of enemies

More post apocalyptic feel (lore friendly?)

A few really nice characters

Decent amount of larger quest mods finished

Not nearly as active, but still around

In other words I would get both, each is better in its own way. I like FNV a lot more then FO3 I find its better for long term play, but I still enjoy FO3 for what it is.

Steam often has both of them for sale for very very cheap, so keep a eye out for that.

If you're going to get New Vegas, get Project Nevada and A World Of Pain. Project Nevada can make the game more challenging with the rebalance module, and A World Of Pain adds much more stuff to do.

Arguably, Fallout New Vegas's story is much better, and same goes for the companions.

I kinda also remember that Fallout New Vegas is more challenging than Fallout 3, in terms of enemies. At least, Deathclaws are actually deadly now.

If you get both, you could play Tale of Two Wastelands, though. In nutshell: yo dawg, i herd u liek new vegas so we put fallout 3 in ur new vegas so u can play fallout 3 while u play new vegs

Both games have their charms, flip a coin and let chance decide! ;)

Seriously though I would have to say for the money (They are both $20 right?) I would go with NV over DC. This is for the simple fact you get the Courier's Stash and Gun Runner's Arsenal DLC. Gotta love having a decent selection of starter gear right out of the box (Courier's Stash) and GRA adds a ton of great weapons and custom ammo for mid/late game.

Still DC is worth picking up its just NV is the new hotness where DC is the old & busted.

And if you feel like waiting on a Steam deal... get em both and try TTW its pretty sweet.

Nivea said it. Though I feel like people who like Fallout New Vegas only come to this realization, myself included, after having played Fallout 3.

Get Fallout 3 first. I hope you get both games, but the poor level design and visuals of Fallout New Vegas may be very off-putting, and it may be difficult to appreciate why Fallout New Vegas is the better game without having played Fallout 3.

And Fallout 3 will provide you with hundreds of hours of awesome gameplay, don't get me wrong. Also, imo vanilla Fallout 3 is playable without mods, unlike NV.

Fallout 3's DLC content is higher quality stuff as well (The Pitt, Point Lookout).

Fallout 3 pros...

Very detailed game world.

Some memorable characters.

Better DLC.

Better suited to those who just want to run around shooting things.

Fallout 3 cons...

Doesn't feel like a proper Fallout game, feels like a shooter set in something resembling the Fallout universe.

Bethesda's dreadful writing which means plot holes and NPCs with dialogue like they've suffered brain damage at some point.

Only a few decent (vanilla) companions.

Companions are as buggy as hell.

No choices or consequences.

FNV pros...

Very good writing.

Characters/companions with depth.

True to the Fallout universe.

Better game mechanics although they can be modded into FO3.

Choices and consequences, you won't see the whole game in one playthrough.

Benny.

FNV cons...

Bugs.

The start is very linear as the story forces you to take a certain route, try and go the other way and you die pretty quickly.

DLC not up to the standard of the rest of the game.

World feels a little empty.

Fewer enemies.

Poor lighting.

It's worth getting both if you can, you should get 100's of hours out of them.

New Vegas wins out in my opinion. Entirely because it's a continuation of the storyline from Fallout 1 and 2, whereas Fallout 3 is... like Jim said, basically a FPS with the stimpak item. Idk why they didn't just remake Fallout 1 with the same storyline, since thats pretty much what Fallout 3 turned into but moved everything to D.C. and shoehorned in the factions from California, which was an incredible violation of the fallout lore. Just incredible.

Umm.. but yeah, New Vegas is bigger, better and I'm still coming back to play it after all this time even though I think it's missing a lot of stuff that should've been in the game.. but my expectations are going to be too high. When it was in production I was hoping for motorbikes and little tanks, that gives you some idea.
