Why does Doc Mitchell give the Courier his Pipboy?

No one knows. This is one of those REALLY BAD design decisions that just make you want to pull your hair out.

I like to pretend that the pip-boy - or in my case the Readius - was simply the courier's in the first place and Doc Mitchell is just returning it.

Which DOES ask why Benny and the goons didn't take it, but eh, it's better than Doc Mitchell just randomly handing over this fine piece of equipment for no sensible reason.

Ok, so i just did a search on Google looking for some info on what Doc lost in FONV. You say no one knows why Doc gave you his pip-boy. Well, that is because, that is not Doc Mitchell. Doc Mitchell was murdered, and I firmly believe this guy is a imposter. Now i know no one would ever take my word for it, and that this is really really old, but I think i even found proof. http://imgur.com/fAiLIxJ That is a picture that I personally found and took while playing the game. I don't know what people here will make of it, but I got my ideas!

Sorry for brining this back from the dead as well friends!

How did it ever come off? last I checked you can't get those things off without choping an arm off.

'The Pip-Boy 3000 features a biometric lock that can only be opened by either the user or a skilled technician.'

'Despite Stanley in Fallout 3 saying Pip-Boys can't be removed, at the start of Fallout: New Vegas Doc Mitchell gives you his old one (meaning he must have had it removed). '

the pip-boy can be taken off by the user at anytime they choose but it has to either be the user or someone who really knows pipboys well enough to know how to take it off. so all the doc had to do was just push a button and it will unlatch from his arm.

also guys the reason you get the pip-boy isnt laziness or poor design choice. it is caused by the game being rushed out the door which prevented the new games mechanics that were going to be used instead of the Pip-boy from being completed and implemented. the whole thing with him giving you the stuff at the beginning is all last second.

though it makes me wonder what happened to our old cloths... and why the jumpsuit? he had to have something else lying around.

There is no mention of this anywhere, so my guess is purely wild-ass.

1. Doc Mitchell should be a central character of Goodspring, as he provide an essential service: medical care. Therefore, any force attempt to put surveillance on the town or want to dominate it would be wise to take him into account. He should have informal contacts of some kinds with some major factions.

2. Who does the robot Victor bring our near dead MC to? Doc, right? While certainly it's logical to bring to the sole doctor for miles around, it's not a stretch to say maybe The House and renegade robot has contact with him. Maybe our Courier once knew him too.

3. our MC is somewhat amnesiac so maybe dont remember that Doc's connection. And for some reason Doc doesnt want to rekindle our thoughts about that connection.

Because beth changed what pipboys were and how important..from a simple radio with advanced functionalities you could carry in your bag or pocket to some wrist mounted device that cannot be removed. So go blame todd.

because it was in the script? LOL

EDITED to add: you know I have actually thought about this all day now. even if it was a last minute idea to add a pipboy to the game. Why not just have Doc Mitchell say "oh here is all the gear that was found on you." you get the PIPBOY, clothes and weapons and other gear and it now makes sense and having amnesia you don't have to worry about explaining where the PC got the Pipboy or his gear in the first place.

 pretty much this.

I do not want to be those haters that "Bethesda sux and has a melon face, Black Isle / Obisidian is the only one who can make a Fallout", even because, I like Fallout 3 and I really like some of the changes they made in relation to old games.

but Bethesda seems to give TOO MUCH importance to certain aspects of the franchise. Pipboy, BoS, Nuka Cola and the 50´s setting, as if Fallout were only about these things.
