Farferello
I just started a new character but did a clean install of the game/cleared out all the old files/folders/registery/etc. Everything went smoothly in the beginning with a Vanilla run so once I got to Riverwood I installed a few asthetic mods and played a while then gradually added a few mods one by one, checking they worked fine. I had one random CTD within Whiterun when trying to fast travel but I didn't have logging enabled at the time. After that, enabled logging and went about my business. The game seemed fine until I tried venturing out of Whiterun. I got a Carriage over to Solitude so I could then hop on my horse for quicker traveling to do the Missing in Action quest. Here is where I started to get my constant CTD's. As I was traveling I got attacked by a Dragon. When it was nearly dead I got the first CTD. On re-loading the last save I had and traveling to near the area, again I got attacked by a Dragon and this time killed it before I got the CTD. Third time I tried a different route, came across Thalmor attacking a spider, helped kill the spider and then I got a CTD again. Looking at the Papyrus log it mostly seems to reference scripts/events which say DLC1 or DLC2. The DLC re-installed when I installed the game but I never turned the DLC on in Data Files/Wyre Bash as I didn't want to play them yet. Arthmoor
Your save has had both Dawnguard and Dragonborn active at some point. That's what all the Papyrus errors about missing files mean. You'll either need to reactivate the ESMs for the DLC files or start a new game. Your CTDs are being caused by data your game is looking for but can't find from the DLCs. Farferello
Well that sucks, I could have sworn I'd never activated them when I started it. If I activate them am I then forced to do them straight off? I was a high level when I started both on my last character, I've only hit level 10 with this one and don't really want those vampires attacking towns considering I haven't actually visited anywhere but Whiterun properly. At this point I'm wondering if it'd be easier to restart. I also had another CTD with another random dragon encounter. Killed it, started to dissolve then I got the CTD. This time it kept stating lines about Head Bleed and Blood Damage. It gives me the purple check box which according to the guide means everything is exactly synched right. I suppose I will try the game for a bit with both DLC's ticked but if it gets too annoying I'll just have to restart. Thanks for the help.
Belial666
Unlike alot of the older Oblivion plugins, the Skyrim ones don't jsut all start at once, you can wait to do things, and some only trigger after the main quest is done,or certain levels, etc. You might also want the unnofficial patches for the game and DLCs. In the case of Dawnguard you may want to use one of the mods that disables vampire town attacks, prevents vampire town attacks till DG quest line has been started, or sends NPCs running inside so they don't die. Farferello
I restarted in the end, I won't lose too much even if it is a pain. Is it okay to clean the DLC's in Tes5Edit or will that somehow activate them? That's the only time I remember ticking them for anything. Or is it okay to leave them saying there's dirty edits that need cleaning for now whilst the DLC is deactivated, and then when ready to finally play them would it be okay to clean? Or should I do them now? When I had them on my other character, when I first bought them it was when I was ready to play so I cleaned and then activated each one as I got it and then played it. Farferello
Okay, so I restarted my character again after clearing out everything in Skyrim, played a bit before adding in my aesthetic mods and that was okay. I added in a few other small mods but now I'm out and about in the surrounding wilderness in Whiterun trying to do a few side quests and such I get CTD now and then and the Papyrus log is full of LvlPredatorScript.psc I know that's understandable, outside in the Wilderness there's going to be various creatures but the two times I've CTD now, that was the last script before. IsharaMeradin
Disregard the false statements and accusations that people make with regard to that particular script (LvlPredatorScript.psc). The truth is here: http://forums.nexusmods.com/index.php?/topic/850182-lvlpredatorscript-the-truth-about-it/ Nothing you can do about it. It is normal behavior. It is not the source of your crashes. You need to remember that the Papyrus log is not a crash log. It can give information about scripting problems and things of that nature but it does not mean that whatever is listed is the reason for your crash. I would guess that your system is merely reaching the limit with the game and crashing out. Save often, flush your memory with a 3rd party tool and/or reboot your computer after long play sessions. Farferello
Yeah, I knew there was a chance that the script wasn't to blame, I was just being paranoid I guess as it seemed rather coincidental. I have had problems in the past with the horrible blue/purple block textures when I had more HD textures installed and thus got rid of a lot of mods that were more HD so the running out of memory could be to blame for it. I do save often and reboot every so often, especially if I play/stop/play the game a few times a day. It's just a real pain that my PC seems to be struggling with this with just a hair/eye/skin mod installed and then two other lighter mods when it loaded a lot more last time with only the rarer CTD. Would it help at all to lower my Anti-Aliasing (set to 4 currently) Anisotropic Filtering (set at 2) and change any advanced options? My Texture Quality is set to High, Radial Blur and Shadow are Low, and Decal Quantity is Medium. I have Land ticked for the reflect water option, should I untick FXAA? View Distance for everything is also pretty low setting wise. Skyrim is the only game I've ever had these sorts of crashes with, and where I've really had to edit any in game settings so I'm not entirely sure what would be best. Thank you for your help though, it's very much appreciated.
ThePopeKYA
Yah, it sucks Bethesda makes such great games that are so unstable. Out of interest, what is your average fps? I found that when skyrim dipped below 30 FPS I would get crashes and freezes much in the same way as you. You probably don't need FXAA since you're running Anti-Aliasing, but honestly disabling the latter can result in a meaty performance boost. Lowering your res or texture quality would probably give better results as well. I'd just try lowering those things just to see if your crashes still occur or occur less often. At least then you'd know if it really is a performance issue (which all signs point towards it being just that).
