Not the greatest A.I.

Before anyone whips out their Burnmaster, this is not flame bait. I really enjoy the game, worship Bethesda, and am in awe of the modders.

But....

There's just something wrong with the fact that a player can snipe the first person in a line of Mercs and have the next person in line keep walking, right over the headless body of the person in front of them. I shot 4 Talon Co. mercs this way. Patrolling enemies don't react to finding dead comrades either. And the pathfinding, while decent in general, leads a lot to be desired, esp. for melee opponents.

A long road was and is yet to walkthru until the day a RPG game will be a sim game. As for me, addicted to those early games with little big head characters whose enemies sprout from nowhere, the road is indeed a long one.

I don't long for this day the RPG will turn out a simulation game, yet I agree with the AI being not much of an AI. But I just don't care. Indeed I think there is already more combat in CRPGs than is need. Sadly, games like Planescape Torment don't get sequels... so much talking and so few brawl. One can go through this game without a single combat, even the final 'boss' fight can be avoided... well...

Games are designed with a purpose on mind, some are straight "shoot them in the head", others are "sneak under their legs", others are... you name it... One can try and do modifications to turn a game genre into another, but should not expect they will be so good as the ones designed from scratch to fulfill the purpose they were conceived.

To attain to the topic: VATS is there to remember Fallout isn't a FPS game and don't pretend to be such.

PS edit: To the ones that hates OBSE in oblivion (as MWSE in Morrowind)... These greater utilities are designed to expand the AI possibilities beyond the original purpose, understand this and maybe the hate turns into love.

I also agree. One time, I sniped several in a group of Raiders, and the two that were still alive were still smoking and relaxing while their companions exploded right in front of them :wallbash: . I didn't see much of an AI improvement from Oblivion, which is disappointing.

true, reminds me of the time in oblivion when I killed the husband of this "loving" wife, and she smiled at me.....

Yeah, When I was escaping Vault 101 I saw the Overseer & that crazed guard trying to convince Amata to turn me in so I sniped them from the doorway (exploding the Overseer's head & sending the guard's across the room). She was happy to see me then but later when I opened Vault door she laid on the guilt trip saying "You go find your dad. I have to bury mine.

Pathfinding in particular must be either the single most difficult programming challenge or the single most ignored one. I played a RTS game once where it was absolutely impossible to move more than one unit at a time through a narrow pass. As soon as one unit moved in the others immediately decided the terrain was impassable and tried to go around. You couldn't even move them one at time without giving each unit individual orders to move forward one unit length, then stop everyone and repeat. Over and over. I've yet to play a game that didn't have this or a similar problem.

As for the AI, I know in Hitman (or one of the sequels) that npc's would see a body and react to it. If it can be done there, then it can be done here.

PS Once again, NOT flame bait. It is possible to love a game, or a person for that matter, and not love every single aspect of it (or them).
