YouDoNotKnowMyName
Good evening everybody! I have had this happen to me a few times now:I discover an awsome site / forum with a good community and a few months later the site goes down. For whatever reason (too expensive to keep running the site / too few visitors / personal reasons / not enought income through advertisement / whatever). And I don't like it when something that means a lot to me gets "taken away" from me. So, where do we go / what do we do if / when this site goes down permanently? One of the other reasons why I am asking this is because this site is huge! I mean really f##king huge!So many mods and the forums are awsome and really helpfull! Lots of data to store, lots of needed bandwidth.Lots of costs. And very very few ads ... It does not add up ... How does this site keep itself up? (As soon as "something doesn't add up" I get really suspicious that it might fail soon ...)
Druuler
Nexus Mods has existed for over 15 years, having outlasted many similar sites, both old and new. The site continues to grow, adding both volunteer and paid staff positions, and updating/upgrading site design, functionality and features. The site gains revenue from advertisements and paid memberships of differing levels. In the 10 years I have been here, I have seen the user base grow from 1.5 million to the current level of, what, over 20 million. Barring major legal issues or a mass exodus of membership, I do not see Nexus Mods ceasing to exist any time soon.
Zorkaz
+Donations There are some alternative mod site out there, just google them. (E.g. ModDB) It's just their service sucks as well as their community. Or it is a kafkaesque hell like Bethnet.
YouDoNotKnowMyName
Oh, yeah I completely forgot that donations and payed membership was a thing ... Oh just because a website is +15 years old doesn't mean it is "invulnerable".I have seen webistes older then that that suddenly stopped existing because of financial reasons ... I know that there are other crappy sites. But just like YouTube, if there is no real alternative, that is not a good thing ... Zorkaz
Or on the contrary it is, because there's no competition and people flock to this site. Also don't worry the people at 3DSmax backup our files
HadToRegister
I'm just hoping I have enough wood stacked up for when the Sun burns out and turns into a White Dwarf.
YouDoNotKnowMyName
Or on the contrary it is, because there's no competition and people flock to this site.As long as everything is well and good, that is a great thing! Also don't worry the people at 3DSmax backup our filesWhat do you mean by that? Why would Autodesk have any interest in mods?
YouDoNotKnowMyName
I'm just hoping I have enough wood stacked up for when the Sun burns out and turns into a White Dwarf. If that happens, we will all be dead ...Or something like that, I don't know ... But I get what you are trying to imply:Yes, I sometimes worry too much, but I just always try to have a "Plan B".Or would you just have faith that everything will be fine all the time ? Druuler
When I first started here on the Nexus, there was no "install with manager" option: all mods had to be downloaded manually, and then installed either manually, or through a game specific mod manager (ObMM or FOMM). Thus, I have copies of all the mods I use, or still intend to use, backed-up in a couple of locations, so, if something ever happened to Nexus Mods, it would not interfere with my ability to mod my games. just saying.... I mostly worry about things like the forum.Because if this site would suddenly be gone, where else would I ask my technical questions about modding?
