Plugin Vacillating Between Groups

Vortex 1.3.19

Issue: One plugin repeatedly moves from one Group to another and back during a Vortex session. Once the session is closed and Vortex is restarted, the plugin appears in the correct Group and stays there.

  • I have seen this behavior on several occasions over the past several weeks, and across several Vortex versions.
  • The behavior seems to occur during particularly long sessions when a lot of changes are being done.
  • Each session, the problem is with one plugin only. The next session it will be a different plugin, but it affects just one plugin each session.
  • The plugin in question (Plugin 1) is initially moved by the user from one group (Group A) to another (Group B). The group change appears to work normally..
  • The problem occurs when several plugins are subsequently being moved one at a time from Group A to Group B.
  • Of a particular batch of plugins being moved, the problem plugin is not the first one moved. It is a few plugins down the list.
  • In this example, the plugins are filtered by Group, so only the plugins assigned to Group A are visible. Plugin 1 (amelia_rose_v3.esp), which has already been moved to Group B, is not visible. The next plugin to be moved out of Group A is at the bottom of the list (JadeFollower.esp).
  • When the group assignment for JadeFollower.esp is changed to Group B, JadeFollower.esp disappears from the Group A list as expected. However, amelia_rose_v3.esp is now present in Group A again.
  • Continuing to work up from the bottom, the next plugin to be moved is AmayaHPSSE.esp. When the group assignment is changed, that plugin disappears from the group list, and so does amelia_rose_v3.esp.
  • I have verified that when amelia_rose_v3.esp is gone from the Group A list, it is in fact assigned to Group B.
  • I have also verified that when amelia_rose_v3.esp is in the Group A list, it is once again assigned to Group A.
  • In this particular Vortex session the behavior was very predictable, happening at a steady one for one in or out swap with every group change made by the user. This continued over a span of about 30 plugins (15 cycles).
  • In this particular session, Group A and Group B were both custom groups created by the user. But in previous sessions this has also happened when Group A was custom but Group B was just the "default" group.
  • To be clear, a different plugin is affected with each session, but the behavior within a particular session affects the same plugin repeatedly.

So you can understand the pace at which the group assignments are taking place, I am using a temporary group assignment to isolate plugins that need maintenance of some sort in xEdit. That way I do not "lose track" of which plugins still require the maintenance, and which have been completed (I'm dealing with 1,300 plugins and need all of the organizational help I can get). So I use xEdit to load/modify/patch a plugin, and when finished with that plugin I move it from Group A (the temp group) to Group B where it will reside from then on. Thus, several minutes may pass between changes in group assignment.

@Tannin42, any thoughts on this behavior? It is still occurs regularly. Now with v1.3.21

Between that problem, and the weird Select thing you've got going on, I'd scan your system for malware or something, or faulty hardware like a mouse that's giving off false clicks, or a keyboard doing the same thing

Because currently, you seem to be the only one reporting these strange problems

Yeah, I understand. When I tried the different keyboard for the Shift + Click issue I tried an entirely different keyboard/mouse combo from a different manufacturer.

Regarding malware, I don't have a way to rule that out 100%, but I have had Norton installed on this computer from day one, and it has never been unprotected. It does daily scans in addition to real time screening.

Vortex is the only application I'm having these issues with. I run tons of applications between work and hobbies, and Shift + Click works fine in all of them except Vortex, and even in Vortex it affects only the MODS window. PLUGINS and SAVE GAMES work normally. I'm also seeing no type of vacillating behavior in other applications.

Of course "software" in Latin means "contains bugs and glitches" so there is always going to be something in any given application. That's just the nature of the beast, and my work applications have their own known issues. Hey, I'm using a Micros*ft based system. What more do I need to say?

As far as being "the only one" I'm beginning to wonder if this may be related to my large list of mods. That might explain the rarity of the problems, though I don't know how it would be connected. I'm dealing with roughly 1,400 mods/plugins at this point.

None of this is game breaking. Weird. A little inconvenient at times. But it still works.

do you have another system that you could install your mods on and see if the issue occurs on the other system too? if you can recreate the issue on two machines, that may help with diagnostics.

Yes, I have a laptop to which I mirror my Skyrim & Vortex installations, but it is quite behind at this point. I don't modify the setup there manually, just mirror changes. I haven't updated it because I'm saving it as a "fallback" while I make some major changes to my primary PC. So, it'll be a while before I can test that aspect. The configuration is older than the problems I am experiencing.

Also, consider the gravity of installing 1,400 mods from scratch. It would take weeks if not months to duplicate the build that way with all of the custom patching involved and sort times of 1 hour 30 minutes each.
