Baldur's Gate 3 on Steam

Okay, I'm an idiot and I freely admit that.

I purchased Baldur's Gate 3 on Steam and now it is part of my Steam directory of games on my E:\ Drive

Trying to use mods to make the game a bit more playable. However, I cannot seem to make Vortex recognize my E:\Drive even though I see an "Vortex" file on the E: drive itself.

I used the "suggest" button and modified my mod destination to E:\baldursgate3\mods folder. I deleted all of the mods I've tried to run and the only one left is XpBoost, which should be very easy to test out. I see that it has installed into the E:\baldursgate3\mods folder, however it does not work when I play the game. I have spent the last 4 hours trying to get any mod to work at at this point I have decided that I probably need to go back to college to get a degree in computer science/engineering so that somewhere in the future after I spend 8 years learning how to install a mod to a game I might actually be able to play this. Honestly, my blood pressure is sky high at this point and I've had to switch to a back up monitor after punching the other one.

I'm not cut out for this kind of frustration. What ever happened to things just working as intended?

Any help would be appreciated, if nothing more than to save myself some student loan money.

Mod staging folder is in E:\baldursgate3\mods

Deployment is Symlink Deployment (run as administrator)

So, you can see the mod in the Baldursgate3\mods folder, but it doesn't work in the game

Can you select any option other than Symlink on that SETTINGS---->MODS screen?

Also, after you installed, and Enabled the mod, did you DEPLOY the mod?

Ok, first of all: calm down. This is a hobby, not a test.

Second: Before anything else, I need you to understand that this is not a store-front where you buy FCC tested products. We are a third party helping with the installation of user-generated content, "user-generated" meaning mostly amateur work.
Think of modding like car tuning. Yes, if you want to mod your game, you are expected to be willing to tinker and learn and find your solutions. If you want a product that just works out of the box, play the game as the developers intended it.
And there is quite a bit of middle ground between 8 years of studying for something and doing no learning at all.
Stuff doesn't work right out of the gate? That's ok, educate yourself a bit, tinker, no reason to get angry. If you're not willing to do that, you will not find any joy in modding games. Especially on an Early Access game...

Getting to your problem: In general I'd advice to start modding with a single mod that has a very visible effect on the game very early on. In the case of BG3: don't start with an xp boost, start with a race unlock. Even if you don't actually want to play with it, this way you will see whether your tools and setup work in general right in the menu.

Then, there is indeed some learning on how modding for games work, every game has its own peculiarities. BG3 for example will disable all mods if you have a single one that isn't compatible and a mod that worked perfectly fine with one version of the game might break with the next. Vortex should tell you if the mods have been disabled by the game with a notification (top right) saying "modsettings.lsx was reset, this usually happens when an invalid mod was installed."

You can't rely on all mods you find on nexusmods to work at all, some might just be outdated and maybe the author will update them, maybe it was abandoned. Maybe you will find a hint about this in the comments or description, maybe not.

XP Boost for example has two versions and one says "try this if the other doesn't work". So - have you tried both?

Have you tried a different mod (and *only* that mod, because again: it takes only one invalid mod to break the entire setup)

Okay, thank you for your assitance. Now, I have seen that message "modsettings.lsx was reset"...but it doesn't tell me which mod is invalid.

Also, I found a link in Documents\LarianStudios\Baldursgate3\Mods on the C: drive

I put the Xpboost in that folder, manually

and it worked

so it appears that the problem is with Vortex?

I still do not see how to get the mods to work with the Steam files on the E: drive though

The problem is with Baldur's gate resetting resetting the modsetting.lsx file.

Now, follow the instructions he gave you.

Uninstall ALL mods, then, install one mod, if you don't get the "modsettings.lsx was reset" message, then install another one.

Keep installing one by one, until you get the message "modsettings.lsx was reset", once you see that message UNINSTALL the MOD that you were installing when you got the message, and DO NOT INSTALL IT AGAIN.

Now UNINSTALL all the Mods again, but now this time, you can install them trouble-free AS LONG AS YOU DON'T INSTALL THE MOD that Reset the modsettings.lsx

No, it's not a problem with Vortex, it's a problem with how you're using it.

There are two versions of xp boost, one is intended to be registered in modsettings.lsx, one is not. Vortex has no way of knowing which it is, you have to tell it!

By default Vortex will register every mod because most of them require it, so the v1.1 file will just work.

For the v1.0 you have to go to load order and remove the checkbox so Vortex doesn't create an entry in modsettings.lsx. But why would you use the older version of the mod? Just use the newer version as I said before.

The mods have to be placed where the game wants them, for BG3 that is always the documents folder. It doesn't really matter where your game is installed.
