"Failed to set game mode" URGENT HELP EMERGENCY

Dude, I don't know how I got stuck with this bullshit, but hear me out. So in short story, I got a gaming laptop, downloaded Fallout New Vegas game that came with the dlcs added already to the game from Steam, played it for a bit, then I decided to try to start modding it for the first time. I watched Gopher video back when Vortex Mod manager was in alpha stage. He said that the VMM was going to be finished here soon and that it shouldn't be that much different in terms of installing it. So i moved on. I download 7-zip already like I was told, then I downloaded VMM. The first time I did this, I went to games, didn't see FalloutNV on managed (which I assume that it because this was vortex first time opening up so, of course it wouldn't have it managed already but I didn't think of that at the time), so I had vortex to scan (find) the game for me. It told me it detected no other or new games. So I scrolled down, found Fallout New Vegas in the unmanaged, click activate and received this prompt (Failed to set game mode) and (Switched game mode). (Failed to set game mode) was the only prompt that had the detail problem to explain what the problem and this is what it said in my detail1 jpg file.

Since i cant add a third photo of the detail, I will copy and paste the whole thing:

SO HERE IS WHAT I HAVE DONE TO TRY TO FIX IT

1. Try to set the path for vortex to find Fallout New Vegas manually, didn't changed a thing.

Also while doing this, for some reason when i click (manually set location) it takes me to where fallout is supposedly at but all there is, is a Redists file, but when I used File Explorer, go to my C drive, progam files x86, Steam, steamapps, common, fallout new vegas, you will find the true location of fallout new vegas where the .exe file is. You can see I have both tabs open in the picture provided with this.

AND YES I tried searching up the problem on the internet, put it seem like nobody had the same problem as me other than the few people asking for help on reddit and steam Q&A, post pages and stuff like that. As far as i know there was nothing on YouTube about the problem. Especially from Gopher!!! Like how the f*#@ did i get stuck with this????????????? Jesus f*#@ing Christ. It like my problem is so rare and it only happen to only and hand full of people. Nobody has in answer to other down "OhHHhh just tried to uninstalling and HavE It SelF DowLoAD, GOOD LUCK"

2a. Found the uninstall vortex program and uninstalled it and try to download it again. Nothing changed, so i tried uninstalling it again and reinstalling it. It was only then i realized. On the third attempt of reinstalling it. I have multiple vortex files in c drive, because the uninstall vortex program didn't take everything vortex related files with it when uninstalling Vortex. So i set off on a mission to uninstall vortex, again, but this time hunt down every related vortex file and delete it , go into my trash bin, deleted everything again, and finally. No remain vortex files.

2b. Now that I have no remaining vortex files left in my computer. I downloaded Vortex Mod manager for hopefully the last time. (I should also add all the times that i downloaded VMM, i didn't click the (download manually), this whole time I had vortex find itself a location to download). Moving on, when i open the app, Vortex started, I had to sign in, I had find Fallout New Vegas in the unmanaged tab, click activate on it. And was hopelessly met with the SAME f*#@ING PROMPT AGAIN.

3. SOOOOOO, in a last ditch effort I did 2a all over again. I tried download it manually. I made sure that it downloaded in it own file in my C Drive where fallout New Vegas is in. Open it up, signed in. found the game in the unmanaged. CLICK ACTIVIATE. AND WAS MET WITH THE SAME PROMPT.

LIKE WHAT KIND OF f*#@ING s#*! IS THIS, YOUR FU........ IN a kind hearted way... Vortex Mod Manager does not work when it first started up. It like it defected straight out of the box. It cannot detect my Fallout New Vegas despite the path saying it exact location AND MAY I ALSO ADD I DID NOT DO ANYTHING SPECAIL WHEN INSTALLING FALLOUT NV! IT IN THE SAME PLACE WHERE ALL OF MY OTHER STEAM GAME ARE.\

AND HERE IS ANOTHER THING, I DID NOT FOUND A SINGLE POST IN THE FIRST 3 PAGES OF VORTEX SUPPORT THAT HAD THE SAME ISSUE AS ME. Granted that what i put in the search box was "Failed to set game mod" nothing closely came up. So perhaps I didn't search hard enough. but none of the less.

I need your help. After posting this, I will try to uninstall vortex again, uninstall Fallout New Vegas, Reinstall both, and maybe, just maybe it will make the difference. I want to start modding my game, I want to start enjoying playing the same mods that I have seen youtubers showcasing on youtube every since i been playing on console. Put this is just getting easily frustrating for me. Why? Because we are talking about computer programs here. That need other programs to support each other, selected type of parameters and settings and other s#*!. Like I don't know why I need 7-Zip, all i know is that i apparently needed it just so that the f*#@ing mods can work with vortex. It overwhelming to say the atleast, i really don't know what means what in the computer programming world or how things truly work. BELIEVE ME I TRIED TAKING A COMPUTER PROGRAMMING CLASS IN HIGH SCHOOL BUT THAT f*#@ING TEACHER COULD'NT TEACH ME FOR s#*!!!! GOD LEE SHE f*#@ING SUCKED, THANK GOD IT WAS AN ELECTIVE CLASS BECAUSE I LEGIT WALKED OUT OF THERE WITH A f*#@ING F FOR THE FIRST TIME IN ALL MY SCHOOL YEARS WHEN THAT SCHOOL YEAR ENDED FOR ME!!!!

AND after posting this, I only have less the 2 Week before I leave for boot camp for the Air Force, so i will be checking every day before i leave. After that, i wont be no where near by laptop or any computer OTHER THAN my phone on Sundays supposedly.

SO PEOPLE OF THE INTERNET AND VORTEX SUPPORT, I HAVE CRIED OUT FOR YOUR HELP TO HELP ME SOLVE THIS VERY DISSAPOINTING PROBLEM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

okay, so I solved the problem. I uninstall both the game and VMM and reinstall it in my External Hard Drive and now everything works! What a relief!

This is 100% PEBKAC.

 

a) The error message tells you that the Data folder is missing in your New Vegas installation which is correct and confirmed by your screenshots. Your New Vegas installation was corrupted, missing all the data files.

b) Both your screenshots show the same location. The Vortex dialog is asking you to select a folder so it's only showing folders. I could understand that this is confusing if you've never used Windows until yesterday but clearly you have been using windows long enough at least to install Fallout New Vegas, then screw it up by deleting files.

 

Vortex has been working absolutely fine, if you had actually read the first error message it would have taken you directly to the correct solution, your problem is that you immediately looked for something else to blame apart from yourself.

 

So the tl;dr; here is that: Yes, Vortex can't mod a game that isn't installed correctly. No one claimed it could.

 

I hope you feel like a fool now because that's what you made of yourself with that outburst.

THAT was your problem.

It was the very first line in the error message.

 

Instead of Reinstalling Fallout New Vegas to fix it, you kept installing and uninstalling Vortex.

You were missing your Fallout New Vegas Data folder, and Program Files (x86) is the WORST folder to install anything in, because Windows protects that folder far too much, as you have just found out, because it didn't even allow Fallout New Vegas' DATA folder to install
