Mishkax
ah,after a couple of hiccups i got custom textures to work. just one question though,is it normal for skin to be that shiny?
Pellape
No. You need to add alpha to the normals and save them as either DXT3 or DXT5 Do peek at the original normals, and you will see how much alpha or rather transparency they have. The darker Alpha you add, the more normal the skin color will look.  Load a skin normals with DXT2BMP and copy that alpha channel and add it to your new skin normals. Mishkax
how dark do i need to make the normal in order for it to look like normal skin instead of glass?
DrakeTheDragon
Very. The resulting normal map must be almost completely see-through in most cases. Every bit opaqueness will create some shine. Most surfaces do shine at least a little bit, so I'm never making them 100% transparent. But it's always very close. When it comes to skin textures it's often a matter of taste though.
Pellape
I can check an normal and see. I use gimp myself and it show the normals alpha channel as transparent but in DXT2BMP the alpha is in its own window and easier to control that way. I do edit the Alpha separate in gimp by exporting and importing it to DXT2BMP. Edited February 24, 2021 by Pellape
