Question About Creating and Using Profiles

Hello Guy's I'm about to create a profile for Skyrim SE but before I move ahead I have a couple of questions.

Background, I use Vortex much like I did Nexus as I install and manage my mods with it but, I do not use it to start my games. generally I go right to Script Extender and start from there with Skyrim and Fallout 4, I mod both games and use Vortex extensively to enable and disable mods as I work on them.

Now, I want to create a profile for Skyrim Se to test and use a different set of mods that would conflict with many of the ones I use now, so hence creating a Profile seemed like the thing to do.

My main question is this, since I don't use Vortex to start my game normally, if I create a profile to install new mods, and enable certain mods I already have installed, can I activate that Profile and start it from Vortex, and can I also start my game using the Default profile, manually ie.. doing it the way I've always done it by starting my game with SKSE instead of Vortex?

So the real question is are the profiles exclusive only to Vortex and not the game if that's true then this should be possible.

I know it may sound confusing but I just want to avoid having to enable and disable profiles just to play the game so I thought if this is possible then it would solve my problem and be a simpler way to do it, since I only need the default setup and a new one and no others.

Thanks

J

No, because with each profile, the skyrim.ini gets rewritten to point to the profile.

I'm not sure, since you extensively edit mods, why you're not just starting each profile with Vortex, because you can also add all the tools to the dashboard for a "One Stop Mod Editing" shop, instead of shutting down, then restarting Vortex whenever you want to edit mods.

Here's my Dashboard, I leave Vortex open the entire time, because I switch between games and profiles, and I have easy access to all of the editing tools without having to open and close Vortex, or use desktop shortcuts etc.

I can just switch profiles, and click any of the tools for easy editing.

Thanks HadToRegister, I'm not surprised you answered, you're always very helpful on the forums.

That totally makes sense, I didn't think about the ini file, I know that Vortex rewrites it for each profile so I should have realized that.

I know your right about modding and Vortex, but I'm somewhere between knowing I should do things differently and still doing things the way I'm use to doing them, if you understand what I mean.

I appreciate your suggestion. Since I'm pretty proficient in modding Skyrim I'll take your suggestion to heart and give it try with Skyrim.

Fallout 4 on the other hand is an entirely different animal it's still a bit daunting for me but I've been getting better at it..

I'll study your layout and move forward from there.

Thanks again.

No problem!

Also, just to let you know, the Dashboard setup I have for Skyrim SE, also works (with appropriate Fallout 4 tools) for Fallout 4 as well.

Thanks again, since I'm still learning how to do stuff with Fallout 4 and it's CK, affinity, editing dialogue with audio software, creating custom dialogue etc.. I'm going to refrain from it with Vortex, BUT! Once I feel comfortable I'll most likely do the same with it.

I've already set up my Dash with the tools I use for Skyrim, which by the way are most of the same ones you have on your's.

Best to you and much appreciation.

Affinity?

As in "Affinity Photo"?

If so, I LOVE that program, it's so close to working with Photoshop I've only hit a couple snags and had to look up how to do something in it.

I got it for $25 during a sale, what a great deal, no way am I going to lease or rent software from Adobe, or anybody anymore, that's such a crappy business model
