Radio stutter

I'd tried a lot of things attempting to fix the radio stutter problem with my Asus Maximus Extreme built in soundcard (it's a SoundMAX card), on a Vista 64 bit setup, and was ready to giveup. I tried numerous .ini tweaks (audio cache related, multi-thread related etc.), installing the "MADFilter" (both with disabling Fraunhofer using InstalledCodec, and without disabling), setting FFDshow to not run with Fallout3.exe, updating my sound card drivers... standing on my head while starting the game up... various reboots and new games between... I just couldn't fix it. It felt like no matter what I did I couldn't fix it, the stutter seemed to be stuck with me.

Browsing these forums again (after spending most of yesterday browsing forums all over using google looking for fix ideas), I discovered psyclops guide on page 5 of this thread, and in the end I did a few things at once in desperation... so I can't track the single thing that fixed it, but incase it helps others, my final stages, which did fix it, were as follows (in order):

* Reset my .ini files back to complete default settings (so no tweaks at all - no audio cache changes, no multi-thread changes, nothing, no tweaks!)

* Unregister and delete the "MADFilter" I had attempted (so no longer have this, it didn't fix it)

* Uninstall "Tversity codec pack"

* Uninstall FFDShow

* Install *latest* standalone FFDShow (this has a huge list of built in apps it's already disabled for, and already included Fallout3.exe, a good sign IMO)

* In FFDShow Audio Config, slid "Merit" slider to far left ("Do not use") - I don't think this actually has any impact since FFDShow should be disabled for Fallout3, but I saw it posted somewhere and thought I'd try it.

* Installed CCCP Codec Pack (when installing it mentioned about disabling some Nero thing or another I've never heard of... I only use Nero burning rom, I didn't realise how many codecs Nero had thrust down my system's throat....)

* Disabled everything in "InstalledCodec", then enabled *all* video codecs, *ALL* Microsoft codecs, the Fraunhofer codec, *all* FFDShow codecs (I figured I'd try these enabled since FFDShow should now be disabled for Fallout3), and the RealPlayer codec. In essence what is now disabled is a huge list of "Nero" codecs (wtf!?), some codecs for "Haali Media Splitter" (I've never heard of this...), some "WavPack audio" codecs, and some "Gabec" company codecs.

Looking back at all of that makes me think the stuttering problem had absolutely nothing to do with the game, settings, cache - it was purely a conflicting codec issue, and all my playing around with codecs somewhere cleaned up a broken one/removed a conflicting one.

Thanks very much psyclops for your valuable guide on page 5 of this thread

It was going through that which led me to the Tversity codec pack removal, the CCCP codec pack install, and attempting to disable everything in "InstalledCodec" - I'm pretty sure it was one of those that fixed it, if not the reinstall of the latest FFDShow.

Yay new working extended 100 songlist Galaxy Radio :D

I started reading this thread a few days ago, Because I can't get GNR Radio Extender working, no matter how many times I have uninstalled / Reinstalled, as far as I can tell everything is installed correctly. But I also am having a Shutter / Stutter with the radio from the very first day, BUT with only one Song and only one and only when I was next to or near a Desk top Radio or Juke Box. So that is what brought me here, Also I should mention that I use The Turtle Beach 5.1 Head set with the Audio Advantage SRM Software. I have not given this much thought because I have played many other games Like Crysis and F.E.A.R. Extraction Point and F.E.A.R. Perseus Mandate. I had no issues with sound, til now With Fallout 3. I do not have many mods installed. and the few that I do have are of Vanilla items that I basicly just did name changes to and a few others that I changed for my own use. So I am pretty sure my mods are not causeing any issues.

But After updating my sound card Audigy 2 ZS with the latest updates. And installing K-Light Full After deleting the Codec's first as required, I was now getting the Radio Shutter / Stutter All the time and I even did the Fallout.ini edit for the Audio Cache up to 4096 but the only way to get the radio playing with no Shutter / Stutter was to hit ESC for a few seconds and that cleared it. But then I switched back to my Audigy sound card and No Shutter / Stutter at all, But Still the GNR Radio Extender will not work, I keep getting a crash to Desk top when one song stops and another is about to start. So I am wondering if the Turtle Beach Audio SRM Software is what is causing my problems with the Shutter / Stutter and the GNR Radio Extender Mod. And this the only Mod that I can't get working that uses Audio in any way.

for anyone that may be interested here is the link to the GNR post I made And I know this thread is for the issue of Radio Shutter / Stutter I just figured that maybe some how the two issues I am having are linked.

All tips ideas welcome

Thank You

I just got fallout 3 not too long ago and i just got my pipboy radio music working but it was stuttering. I have tried everything but switching acceleration to basic, how do you do that in vista? I can't find it in my sound settings.

Do not know how it works on Vista/Win7.

Unfortunately I uninstalled Win7 recently so I cant take a look.

Have you already tried to disable all unecessary codecs by using the Installed Codec program?

Yes, i disabled all of the unneeded codecs, which got my radio working but I had stutter. I will try getting a sound card to see if that helps because it could be from the stress of my CPU. Also it doesn't seem to stutter when the game is minimised with alt+tab.

You could try to install the latest >> Vista Codec Package <<.

This seems to fix various problems, btw
