  1. um okay, but that isnt nearly as profound as you think it is the romans were basically the middle school bullies of classical civilization, they did all sorts of horrifying crap like they left unwanted children buried alive in rubbish heaps its really disingenuous (and pretty creepy) to say "the romans did it, so blah blah blah, moral relativism, pedophilia is ok"
  2. also ur hamburger points are 0 in every screenshot u should eat more hamburgers to get hamburger points
  3. here http://i.imgur.com/UGwx0Mj.png just use them
  4. the point was that rich romans auctioned off their children asap to strengthen the paterfamilias in the villages and provinces marriage patterns resembled modern ones i dont think your history prof was trying to turn you into a pedophile apologist you may have misunderstood the lesson
  5. You are really failing to see the forest for the trees here. Nobody is trying to step in and dictate the gender of characters in individual games. But taken as a whole, gender representation in games points to a systemic problem, and it's reasonable to ask developers to take more action to fight this problem rather than contribute to it. It's like the pay gap. If Alice makes $4k less than Bob each year, that could be due to any number of reasons. But if you look at the entire workforce, industry-by-industry, and find that women overall get 30% less compensation than men – well, it calls for the same sort of systemic intervention.
  6. Dafuq? Yeah. This is what happens when someone's views are informed entirely by South Park and bad stand-up routines.
  7. Um, what? An armed and trained police officer almost gets killed responding to a domestic violence call – but you think that before the officer arrived the victim was in no danger whatsoever and it was just an "argument"?
  8. You are completely misinterpreting the situation. Nuisance property ordinances aren't designed to make it easier to evict tenants. They're designed so that municipalities can force landlords to evict tenants, using the existing legal framework, if those tenants are a "nuisance" to their neighbors or produce an undue strain on police services. The municipality views domestic violence victims as violators because, apparently, their screams for help bother neighbors as they're trying to watch Night Court. And you know, I'd also like you to look over your post again, and consider that fully half of it is dedicated to complaining about (imagined) infringements of landlords' rights. You give practically no mention of the victims, who are evicted, oftentimes into homelessness (in Norristown, defendant in the ACLU suit, 20% of the homeless are domestic violence victims). I mean, real talk – exactly how much Ayn Rand did you have to read before you started thinking like that?
  9. WTF are you on about? If a woman's abusive ex breaks into her apartment and starts assaulting her, do you really think that's not a matter for the police? idgi, I honestly just dgi
  10. Domestic Violence Survivors Who Call the Cops Risk Eviction in Some Places – The Atlantic Cities "Nuisance property ordinances" in dozens of US cities, from Los Angeles to East Rochester, threaten tenants with eviction and homelessness – and property owners with loss of their licenses – if police are forced to respond to a domestic violence complaint. Tenants who call 911 on their abusive partners are told that they must either suffer their abuse in silence, or be forcibly removed from their homes. The ACLU has fought against this with some minor success, but municipalities are now pushing back, perhaps emboldened by our 81%-male Congress, which treats domestic violence as such an afterthought that they allowed the Violence Against Women Act to silently expire in 2011, to be grudgingly re-enacted more than a year later. To me, this is an absolutely disgusting situation. It represents the intersection of municipalities' care for maintaining property values above and beyond ensuring residents' welfare, with the deep undercurrents of misogyny and victim-blaming which have always plagued the government's treatment of domestic violence issues.
  11. You know they said the same exact thing in 220 BCE: “What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun.” So you, yourself, bring nothing new to the table. That said, if you replace knowledge and natural curiosity with close-minded cynicism, of course you will think culture is dying. But that doesn't mean culture has really ceased to evolve. It means you have.
  12. I hope and pray you weren't a biology major.
  13. I see. Hey, this may be OT, but did you ever get published that unique cosmological theory of yours?
  14. The cost of drug development has been doubling every six years. Since the '60s, the number of participants in clinical trials has increased hundreds-fold. Please don't pretend you're an expert of areas in which you have zero knowledge.
  15. "Anyone who is weak deserves to die!" – brought to you by someone arguing on a video game debates forum
  16. Forgot to stubquote; it was for Syco21. You know, if someone doesn't provide any citations for this stuff I just assume they're speaking from their own expertise. And with how Syco21 is speaking, they must be a Supreme Court justice or something. Somehow, it's turned into a debate on whether there are currently any restrictions whatsoever on FREEZE PEACH. Which, if you're coming from that mindset, I guess it would mean that limiting one's ability to anonymously harass random strangers over the Internet is the first limitation on FREEZE PEACH to ever be considered in all of human history.
  17. Okay, thanks for clarifying. Just curious, which law school did you graduate from?
  18. Oh, cool. So if I go around offering people $20,000 to murder Wilhelm Ackermann that's totally free speech right?
  19. So write a damn book. Freedom of speech and freedom of the press has nothing to do with being entitled to harass random strangers on the Internet. Nobody ever started a revolution by shouting racial slurs at someone over X-Box.
  20. Well, I don't really care what a bunch of hostile strangers are "really thinking." So then why is it so terrible if people self-censor in a public forum?
