  1. In response to post #24801699. I only comment because of my ties to the community. I explained it all in another post recently and don't want to repeat it. I would like to see it get better. I however already left. A year ago I stopped all mod work for more satisfying endeavors. I did like modding but it was economically unsound time usage for me. Recent events piqued my interest though. So I came back and have been reminded why I left. Anyway I know what you are saying.
  2. In response to post #24799164. #24799594, #24801449, #24801539, #24801584 are all replies on the same post. I'm not familiar with it. But all options are open.
  3. In response to post #24799164. #24799594, #24801449 are all replies on the same post. An as long as you get free mods you like it that way. I'm not surprised . But be aware I am not alone in my thoughts.
  4. In response to post #24800994. I understand what you are saying but... It's an excuse. Talk to modders, we know that a donation is rare indeed. Most people don't see why they should even want to. Just read what is said here below. A lot of people figure that they paid to be a member and that entitles them free mods so that is that. I didn't expect them and was not disappointed. I made my mod for free and knew it but ....not again. I don't mind being generous, I don't like being used. I'm not talking about just the community here. There is big money involved even without your donations.
  5. In response to post #24798859. #24798999, #24799109, #24799114, #24799789, #24800024 are all replies on the same post. I think they will. So what's your point. In the end you can download free mods from wealthy people and people that think it is their hobby and very new modders who just want experience. They will be free though so I guess you win. Some will even be good.
  6. In response to post #24799164. Spoken like someone with no files. I wonder how many mods are in your load order?
  7. In response to post #24798804. #24799224, #24799404 are all replies on the same post. The fact that the button has been there over a year and most people don't even know it should give you an indication of how important it is to the community.
  8. In response to post #24798859. #24798999, #24799109 are all replies on the same post. I don't see how any thinking person could fault you.
  9. In response to post #24798079. They spend that money so they can make more. As for the rest of your post, if it is referring to mine at all I think you might want to read it a gain. You don't seem to understand it.
  10. In response to post #24797694. In reality very few people pay anything if they can get away without. No matter what you hear on these posts. There is already a donations button. The most rarely used button on the internet.
  11. In response to post #24794924. #24795654, #24797254, #24797884 are all replies on the same post. The nexus can do whatever it wants. It always has. I benefited from the nexus community and freely admit it. It also benefited from me. My point is that the Nexus is not a charity that exists for providing a place for modders. Nor is it giving mods away for free. That is an illusion. It is a business. If it wants to continue to be profitable it will have to adapt. People will move to a place where they feel their work is being appreciated. One sure way to feel appreciated is to be paid. If the Nexus wishes to continue to profit from modders they will have to give something tangible back. If they do that modders will stay. and you can still get free mods. If the nexus keep pretending that modders are not the soil that grows their crop of mods that they are allowed to make money from. They will lose their business. p.s I respect the user who appreciates the work not the low hanging fruit picker.
  12. The Nexus.......Hm......What a weird place. It has multiple personalities of that I am sure. There are illusions here, some just occur naturally but some are deliberate. There is a balancing act that is very delicate and very much in danger. If the next steps taken are not very carefully considered the results could be problematic. I am an artist. I paint, sculpt, write and mod. I made one mod for New Vegas that I released. It was my first mod. I don't do things in a small way so my mod is big. It adds characters and places and has a story. I found out that making a mod can be a lot of work. I also found out that with out the help and advise of the modders here in the community I couldn't have done it. Whenever I ran into something that I need help with all I needed to do was ask and someone would offer their experience. When I needed voice actors I got them from the community. The texture work came freely offered to me from a member of the modding community as did the music. I made friends all over the world, people I wish I could sit down and have a meal with but I will never meet. When I started it I didn't even consider the possibility of making money. As I worked on it however , I became aware of the donate button. The more work I put into it the more I thought that there was a possibility that the users would realize and be inclined to donate. I still didn't expect much but thought maybe a little would be nice. After months of work I was ready to release it. If you have released your first mod I don't have to say anything more, you know what that is like. If you have never released one, let me tell you it is a stressful, emotional, wonderful moment. Your heart is pounding when you click that button. Will they like it? Will they hate it? Worse yet, will they ignore it? Luckily people seem to like it. It didn't make a huge splash and become the talk of the entire Nexus but the people that commented on it enjoyed it. I got endorsements but they don't taste good, I'm going to try to wear them. Most people took it and never said anything, like it is some kind of low hanging fruit. That is kind of disappointing. But they did pay their subscription or saw the advertising so the did pay for it. Just not me. I view it as a positive experience. My mod has been out for a while . I made no money. I made friends. I learned. Will I ever put that much work into something that has no value? No. I will still create but I gotta eat so my time cannot be spent on non profit things. I'm just not in that kind of financial position. Wish I was. Big mods take time, time is money. Right? The people that I have dealt with personally in the community have been overwhelmingly helpful and positive. But there is an undercurrent of very ungrateful and rude behavior that cannot be ignored. I see it and so does everyone else. It eats away at the core and causes animosity between creators and their audience. Who could benefit from such a schism? Who has to walk the tightrope between the Modders and the users? Who benefits monetarily from free mods the most? The Nexus....Hm......Without it I couldn't have met those people. My friends and those helpfull modders. I guess it's a benevolent place Right? Kinda like a nice old Uncle that lets you play in his yard, Right? There is no way Modders are being used by The Nexus is there? No one could be getting rich from the work of the modders here could they? No one dodged a bullet here did they? Some one needs to show respect to the people that create their bread and butter. Maybe if some of that bread was shared mods can be free for the users in the future. If the next steps taken are not very carefully considered the results could be very problematic

As far as endorsements go, well they are a kind of thumbs up to other users looking for a mod. They are not a thank you to the modder they are not some kind of psuedo payment. All it does is say "I think other people will like this. They do nothing for the modder at all, in fact you are not even engaging the modder by endorsing the mod.

Don't think things can't change. Change is constant. Once people don't feel appreciated they will look for it elsewhere. The more the evidence adds up that the community is largely un grateful for the work modders do the more the likelihood that they will move to something that will satisfy them in some way. Add to that the fact that others are profiting from their work but they are somehow supposed to be above all that and you are practicaly driving them away. The best you'll be able to hope for is the inexperienced modder that wants to cut his teeth. This could have been avoided if the community nurtured modders for the fruit they bore and maybe if the nexus acknowledged how well they are doing for themselves providing those mods that modders should not profit from.

My prediction is the end of modding as we know it. The is just no incentive any more. I think more and more modders will find outlets for their creativity and move on. The people that keep saying " if you don't like it don't do it" will get their wish. Imagine your loadorders with only official dlc's. It won't be the greed of the modders that causes this, it's the greed and apathy of the community combines with outright usery of companies that really do already profit from mods that will cause the end.

If you want anything to last you have to maintain it. If you want modders to mod than you need to create an atmosphere where they feel it is worth doing. Otherwise you will lose them. It is not a new or difficult concept.

  22. Do you know what a modder is? An artist. The medium may be different than what artists traditionally used in the past but the personality and the drive in a person to create is still there. Some artists see their work as something they do to pass the time, they might see it as a hobby. You'll never lose them. Some artist like sculptors or oil painters or even some modders see their work as something much more. I wonder how many mod users know an artist in real life? Do you know what kind of person it takes to create something where there was nothing? In the "old" days an artist worked for hours using his or her skill technical knowledge and creativity to make a work of art. The end result is a unique and therefore valuable piece. In "modern times" an artist who chooses to mod will put the same effort into their work as the ol time artist but there is a difference. Because of the nature the medium the only way to exhibit your work you must give it away and since there is not one unique object but as many copies as is needed it becomes valueless. In the end if modders are not made to feel appreciated for their efforts you will lose them. They could just change mediums because the drive to create can be satisfied in a myriad of ways.

It is about making money off people with creative compulsions. As a modder you make a mod that maybe took many, many, I mean many hours. Some people like it, some complain about it. A lot of people take it for free and never say anything. There might be "review" videos made where some guy who thinks he is a stand up comedian half heartedly plays it while he tries to think up jokes about it. Nexus makes money. Steam makes money. Bethesda makes money. Microphone companies, Video card companies, computer companies and even the electric company makes money. Modders get used. Why? because they have a creative compulsion and no outlet for their work. End result I learned a lot and will never make another one. I have now leased a game engine and am making my own game.
