  1. The difference between Steam and This new DRM is that Steam only requires you to be online the first time you play your game (which, while still not good, is a lot more reasonable). You can just run it in offline mode the rest of the time. Whereas with this, you HAVE to have a constant, uninterrupted, reasonably fast internet connection, and I don't know anyone who has that (especially not here in the UK). Also, if Ubisoft's servers go down for any reason, everyone gets kicked out of the game. Which means as soon as someone decides to DDoS their servers (which, lets face it, will happen), all the legitimate customers get kicked out of their game (while the pirates don't even notice). When a cracked version of a game downloaded free off bittorrent offers a better experience than the legal, paid for version, you know theres a major problem. And thats the case with more and more games lately. Incidentally, how many people who would otherwise have bought AC2 on PC, will now get it for a console instead, to avoid this? Because I often wonder if this entire DRM thing is simply being used by publishers to drive as many people onto the consoles as possible; which means cheaper development costs, and more control over what people do (seeing as consoles are 100% under the control of Sony or whoever; players don't have the same freedom as PC users do).
  2. More news: PCGamer managed to get an interview with a Ubisoft spokesperson. They made a point of avoiding all the important questions, however, so it doesn't say much. My favourite bit: I think I have a new quote for my sig...
  3. 10.5mbps? Slow? Wow, I've never actually seen an internet connection go anywhere near that fast in my life. The high-speed corporate LAN I'm using atm barely reaches 1mbps, if I really push it. My home connection is a similar speed, when its not being throttled, despite being the fastest package available in my area. Seriously, if you want to know what slow internet is, come visit the UK...
  4. I didn't realise we had any /b/tards on this forum. Though I guess it does make sense. But I doubt I'm the only one who thinks that what happens over there, should stay there. As for the girl... I don't get what all the fuss is about. Sure, shes good looking enough (though I've seen better), but the entire thing got way out of hand.
  5. They had a really interesting discussion about this, and DRM in general, which I totally agree with, over on RPS, in the podcast. Well worth a listen, its really good stuff. http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2010/02/02...reless-show-38/ The rest of it is excellent too, in fact.
  6. http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2010/01/27...ways-be-online/ The ironic thing is, this will do absolutely nothing to stop piracy. If anything, it will have the exact opposite effect; cracked copies will have none of these restrictions - and when pirated copies of a game are better than the official, legally bought version, theres clearly a major problem.
  7. Meh, its alright. Could be a hell of a lot worse, thats for sure.
  8. I've been playing this quite a lot, its a surprisingly good game. Reminds me of Mercenaries for the PS2 - which was an excellent game. As for performance issues... I had some at first as well. Apparently it doesnt like PCs with an ATI graphics card and a quad core processor (I have an HD4890 and a Q6700). However, theres a beta patch out which fixes most of the issues (1.03), and theres a workaround which seems to deal with most of the other issues. Load the game up to the main menu, then alt-tab out to the Task Manager, find the saboteur.exe process, and set the affinity to cores 1 and 2 only - this seems to fix most issues, and it doesnt seem to affect performance. Other than the technical issues though, this is definitely one of the best games I've played in a good while. Its great fun.
  9. Literally, just plug it in, turn on your PC, and boot it up as normal. then, once you're in Windows 7, wait a minute or two, as Bben said, and the new drive will appear in My Computer - probably as E:, or F:. It won't boot from it usually unless you either a) switch the two drives around, or b) edit the bootloader so it boots XP instead - something which you can't do by accident, so don't worry about messing anything up in Windows 7.
  10. I'm 5 hours too late, but... happy new year!
  11. You'd need a new board. Though, I'm not sure if Crossfire-capable boards can do SLI or not, and vice-versa. What board do you have atm?
  12. To install a new HD, all you need to do is plug it in, turn on your PC, and it should appear in Windows as drive E: (or whatever letter happens to be free). You need to format it, which is easy enough, then youre done. Don't worry about the IDE/AHCI/RAID thing, just leave it as it is.
  13. My main wormhole experience was an impromptu Eve Uni op I organised once - there were about a dozen of us, I was the only player older than a couple of months (and the only one in anything better than a frig - I was in an Ishkur). We found a wormhole in 0.7 space, I spent ages searching for the easiest combat site I could find, and warped us in. Within about 10 seconds, we were all warping out again, I was in half structure, and 5 or 6 people had lost their ships :P Was fun, but it clearly needs some pretty tough ships (several BCs at least) to do properly.
  14. Yes, but calling it 'point and click' makes it sound like some kind of 2D adventure game. Its point and click in the sense that you use the mouse to control everything, and theres plenty of menus etc to deal with. There are hotkeys to do a lot of things though. It is one of the most complicated games you'll ever play (second only to Dwarf Fortress imo), but stick with it, and it's also one of the most rewarding. If you give it another try (I recommend you do), and need help with anything, I'd suggest joining the channel "E-UNI Public" and asking the good people there. Even just keeping half an eye on the conversation teaches you a lot, and its a lot better than the rookie help channel.

  16. Well, I just resubbed for 3 months, to see what dominion's like. Haven't played much yet, but I just got disconnected while fighting 3 BS rats in my ishkur n 0.1 space... the game is now refusing to connect, so it looks like i may have lost a valuable ship :P Ah well... I have a domi now for missions, so I should make it up soon enough. I've also joined a startup merc corp based in lowsec - seems to offer a lot more freedom than most merc corps, so should be good fun.
  17. If you google it - or even read the news article I already linked in this thread - you'd see that it is coming out for 360 and PS3 only. Its not a PS3 exclusive... and sadly nor is it coming out for PC.
  18. Yeah, I've been awake for 2 days straight now myself, did an all nighter last night to get a couple of essays finished. Its really not good, I advise against it, you won't have enough energy to focus on anything properly towards the end of the second day. In fact, I'm pretty sure my coursework's suffered because of it - trying to draw a neat network diagram by hand when you only have pens (no pencils left) and you keep writing the wrong words down by mistake really doesnt work :P But I'm too tired to care :D Anyway, I'm off to bed now... deadline is 8.30am tomorrow, so I have to be up again
  19. From what I understand, its not coming out for PC after all. They're developing it using PC-based dev tools, but theyre only releasing it on the PS3 and 360 :( http://kotaku.com/5028961/of-course-final-...d-%5Bupdated%5D
  20. Guitar Pro is a good program for doing guitar music on the computer. Its a tab editor, so you can just type in guitar tabs, and then play through them. It does have drum noises as well. The sounds could be better, but it gets the job done very well. Its especially good for learning guitar tabs, but its designed primarily for composers, so it should be what youre looking for. You have to pay, and I'm not sure if theres a free trial or not, but its easy enough to get hold of if not.
  21. You've been able to do that since Windows XP, at least... just right click on a process in task manager and choose 'set priority'
  22. Looks like Acti-blizzard are the new EA...
  23. Like Vagrant said, proper mind control doesn't really exist. The closest you'll get are things like what Derren Brown does (The Heist, This trick or Treat episode, and a lot of his other shows - his 'Mind control' series is probably relevant too). Yes, I know its not the same thing, and most of its staged specially for TV, but at least he admits it - and tbh thats the closest you're gonna get, seeing as its all psychological, tricks of the mind, etc. EDIT: I don't know if any of those links will work outside the UK btw, its on the Channel 4 website. If not, try Youtube.
  24. Mods too of course. I joined the forums because I was making my own mod, and was having a really annoying problem with landscaping (which I couldn't find any answers to), so I gave up searching, and made my first ever post on an online forum. This was with a different account. After that, I had a look around, and decided to stay. So I made a new account with a proper name, and just hung around in General Mod Talk till now. Good times.
