  1. On another note, just a couple days ago GabeN himself stated that if the paid mods system proved to be bad for the community, Valve would end the process. Today, they did just that. I guess he was telling the truth after all.
  2. In response to post #24732589. .... But we can totes worry about that after a couple bottles of champagne. xD
  3. In response to post #24732359. #24732454 is also a reply to the same post. Damn right. They really didn't need to end the whole thing like they did. It's almost comparable to the end of the Cold War.
  4. Well ladies and gents, its been a pleasure serving with you. Mission... Accomplished? I guess the real question is, was it quickly enough? Can we come together again as one Community, United Under Nexus? I certainly hope so. And although I personally still seethe at Beth and the valve she sat upon, ( :P ) I would like to thank Valve and Bethesda for doing the right thing, at least given the circumstances. Maybe this can be worked on so that fewer people are shafted in the future, and those who want to be paid, can be. On that note, I hope we as a community continue this donating spree we started ever since the drama began. Goodness knows, some of these modders totally deserve it.

I loved your example, but I think its less that he dodged the question and more that he was being verbose about it. For instance, in answer to the DRM question, he's basically saying that he thinks its up to Bethesda, not Valve. That's why he goes on about not "dictating" what developers can or cannot do with their games rather than just sayig yes or no. Furthermore, the Dark0ne was asking in between the lines whether Valve would put a stop to it if they tried, and instead of, once again, saying yes or no, he just says its up to Bethesda, but Valve will let them know if they think their action is stupid.
  7. In response to post #24711234. #24716534 is also a reply to the same post. Someone posted the breakdown here earlier, but here's a concise version: In order to get any money from SW, your mod must make $400 in sales. After $400, you will be paud 25%, or $100. You don't get a payment immediately- payments are sent every 3 months. In other words, unless you either make an exceptional, expensive mod that many hundreds of people buy, and choose to pay the SUGGESTED amount, not minimum, or unless you make hundreds of cheap mods, each of which alone makes over 400 in sales, you are making less than a fast food worker at minimum wage for the same amount of work. I don't even need to go into a breakdown on how much a burger flipper makes. Even at 20 hours at 7 bucks an hour, the math speaks for itself.

The abuse he's receiving does not preclude him from remembering the years of good that he experienced working here. And Chesko has been around awhile- longer than both of us, I imagine. It's hard to let go when you have that kind of attachment.

  11. In response to post #24700324. #24700499 is also a reply to the same post. Long live the Dark 0ne. Long live the Nexus, and all her children. Only as a community can we save ourselves now.

Not many people would swallow their pride like that- not in this industry, and most certainly not on the internet. I'm sure that all will be forgiven in time, from the rest of us modders, but you should enjoy your time away. Think of it more as an extended vacation than self exile. ;) Best.
  13. I wish Emma would have posted here at some point but here's her thoughts on the matter: http://emmates.proboards.com/thread/1705/regards-charging-mods?page=1#scrollTo=42265 For those of you who don't know, Emma is a modder that's been around since before most of us even started. She is best known for her companion mod "Vilja," credited as probably one of the most worked on "Smart" companions in Oblivion and Skyrim, having thousands of custom scripts and dialogue, completely voice acted, and in the case of Oblivion, can even go on adventures in Cyrodil on her own- where YOU are HER companion. Here's her opinion in brief: "The spirit of modding is sharing. In order to grow in quality rather than in quantity, modding has to be a labour of love, not a labour for money." I myself believe that modders should be compensated in some way for their work, but if they didn't build the mod with passion, it probably isn't worth a penny anyway. I'm looking at the useless weapon and armor textures already flooding SW at 1.00-1.99 a pop.

It's all I can do. :/ This isn't the first time I've been part of a great community that was in the throes of destroying itself. The only difference is, all the other ones are now dead.

  17. In response to post #24676199. #24676509 is also a reply to the same post. Our goal is to make modding better for the authors and gamers," Newell said in a Reddit Ask Me Anything thread. "If something doesn't help with that, it will get dumped. Right now I'm more optimistic that this will be a win for authors and gamers, but we are always going to be data driven." Praise Lord GabeN, maybe there is hope after all! THIS SHOULD BE AT THE TOP OF THE COMMENTS SECTION!

I offer a different take on the entire situation: He can either take the small pittance that Valve is offering, when they themselves are only making a little more than the mod author themselves off of a mod (Bethesda takes 40% no matter what, Valve can either take 35%-30%, depending on the whims of the mod author), Or he can reject it, and be seen as too good for the Steam Workshop and/or a possible opponent and roadblock. The fact of the matter is, if Bethesda and Valve wanted to destroy the Nexus, there is nothing Robin can do to stop them, even if we were to donate all our proceeds to a special legal fund JUST for him. Valve may be a more lenient in this respect since most of their big names came from the mld scene anyway (per GabeN) but Bethesda has no such reason to be lenient. They knew we were a possible source of income for years, they just didn't act on us until they thought the time was right. And regardless of what you think of the Dark0ne's ultimately morality and ethics, it still stands that what he does, he does for the Nexus. Or at least, he thinks benefits the Nexus. Put more simply, when you're in the position he is, you need a bit of tact in deciding when to play things smooth, what things you CAN explicitly fight against, and what things are better too accept. The Nexus, regardless of our community and power, is still a mouse against the powerhouse that are Bethesda and Valve's whims. Our war, if we continue it, must be asymmetrical and well played. But not unless we can reunite the broken clans under SOMEONE. Each day we fight with each other, the more ground we lose. Wrath will only get us so far- has only gotten us so far.

  21. In response to post #24665669. Aye. We must be like the Greeks during the invasion by Xerxes. ...let's just hope the Nexus doesn't represent the 300 Spartans.

For my part, there's no point in quitting Skyrim or the other ES/FO games, since I paid for them already- but I will likely not purchase anymore Bethesda titles in the future. Perhaps its my remaining loyalty from the old days of Valve's earlier years, but I intend to give Valve another chance, given what GabeN has told us and the fact they are not receiving a majority share of the profits, and were not directly responsible for the abysmal profit arrangement. That said, I personally won't be purchasing any mods through SW, and will instead donate here, knowing the modders wikl get 100% of my proceeds. I have already begun. Time will tell what sort of alignment shift Steam will bring, but for the time being they still seem to be somewhere in the neutral. I can't begrudge a company wanting to make money, after all. But I can begrudge exploitive business practices and unfinished games with dozens of day one DLC. And to be fair, with exception to Dota, Valve hasn't made a new game in years. Hope to see you around, even if its just as a visitor.
