    The Snow Arena

Here, have this hand warmer. Let's make a pact. Here's a bucket of magic virtual snow. You creep up on pickysaurus and lob one at him and I'll throw one at LadyMilla (who has been way too quiet if you ask me)... Then - and here is the coup de grace - we both aim one at The Dark One who started this and is now skulking in the warm virtual kitchen... See if you can whack the snowball with Sunder - I'm assuming you still have Wraithguard? I'll fire one with the Bow of Shadows - that'll keep him guessing. And then we run like hell - I've got The Sidrat parked just round the corner - or there's Arvak if you want to be traditional. Don't worry about me - I'll teleport out if I have to but I've also got this ward spell... and I can call a dragon if I need to... Don't angst over the snow - it's magic. I spent yesterday concocting the recipe. It won't thaw and the snowball stays in tact until it hits its target when it explodes into loads of soft flakes which are very very cold. But no one gets hurt. PS And whoever designed the 'recently used' emoticon feature then you can have a star! Excellent bit of usability that...

Pagafyr - you're so busy throwing snowballs on your own that I've been able to creep up behind you and splat you with the snow we've just had before it goes all mushy and yukky... Happy December!
  3. The same people who trust organisations with all their logins? Regarding reinstallation - have you tried to do that? I seem to remember that reinstallation often caused Windows to attempt a repair which sometimes did the trick. Maybe Windows savvy people (I'm Linux based) can confirm if that's still the case. If I get to the reinstallation stage then I tend to want to wipe the thing, reformat the hard drive and start fresh. I've found the decision between hardware failure and software failure hard to work out sometimes so I always want to rule out an issue with the hard drive first as it's the easiest for me to solve... Not sure if you know this but if you don't have access to a Windows OS disc then MS will supply an image via download. If you do reinstall then I hope it fixes as easily as possible!
  4. I agree with HeyYou. There are people out there who seem to take an absolute delight in being spiteful. I don't have an explanation. I did some work once to see how far people are influenced by the nature of the comment that comes before the one they make and predictably, if someone says something negative, subsequently others are likely to follow that 'lead'. The data we produced was too 'iffy' to publish and I never got round to redoing it. But I bet someone has. In your position, I'd educate myself as best I could (been there - done that!) and try to find a programming community that isn't too self-obsessed... or contains some nice people. They exist too. Some are so very generous with their time and they're altruistic. It isn't about how they look, it's about how they can help. In the forums I've built and managed there's been the opportunity to block content from people you find obnoxious. I expect the same is true here. It won't stop you from seeing their nonsense if someone quotes them, but it might help. I'm so used to being in charge of forums that blocking doesn't dawn on me as a solution for myself. But I suggest it as a method for not being wound up. If it's any comfort, I've noticed on some forums that mods have started stepping in when a brand new member posts to the wrong place or asks something a long term member doesn't like. So they've intervened when there have been responses like you've necroed a topic or you've posted in the wrong place or that question has been asked before... I've actually got a bit more hopeful for the web...
  5. Interesting question. First person in games where it exists. However, in Baldur's Gate I&II it just isn't; and I scarcely notice. I'm not sure I'd have much patience with a modern third person perspective though... BG I & II are kind of 'special'.
  6. I'm a bit late to the party so I'm sorry. I've successfully run Vortex on Ubuntu. However, at some point it would no longer launch from my desktop - I had to launch it by instigating a download from Nexus. I never fixed the problem because it wasn't much 'broke'. However, my attempts to install Vortex on my new machine - running exactly the same version of Ubuntu - have failed (so far). The difference is that I never installed the original OS on this machine - it was done by the company building the rig so I'm not exactly sure what they did. They also installed a stable long support version of Ubuntu (Jammy Jellyfish) whereas I was running Mantic Minotaur on the other machine and I then updated this machine to Mantic Minotaur. There may be something in all that. I tried two ways of installing Vortex - one through effectively a manual install then two attempts (different ones) through Lutris and so far I have been unsuccessful. The first time it installed but then when it was relaunched it didn't... The second time it just burst into tears and refused to run at all. However, I have successfully installed Mod Organizer 2 using rockerbacon's version and instructions at github. It runs perfectly for Skyrim though whinges about some of the mods (I ignore that - it runs... so who cares). However, so far I haven't got the instances to work so I can't use it on Morrowind - just SkyrimSE. I may just give up and manually mod Morrowind... If you get Vortex to work then it's great but you may well have to set up symlinks (symbolic links) and that isn't easy if you're new to Linux. Lutris has a version which is supposed to recognise your games library in Steam but that version threw a tantrum for me and I gave up (for the time being). Just in case I sound like I give up easily - I don't but we use ASDL here and download speeds would make most of you weep. I tend to do big downloads overnight but that isn't always practicable if I'm needed to press a button or something. I'm not sure how many people here game on Linux. You may get some help from a Linux forum and Steam - there's a Linux community there who are very helpful and knowledgeable about Linux. There are many many many Linux gamers out there and some phenomenally talented and patient software engineers who seem determined to make it all work on Linux - rockerbacon is one such person but you'll come across others. rockerbacon's Linux version of MO2 is here: https://github.com/rockerbacon/modorganizer2-linux-installer Follow the instructions extremely carefully! If you get Vortex to work then never ever let it update! I game on Linux because I really want to and it is getting easier but one has to accept that most games aren't built with Linux in mind so it requires some extra help. Steam has come a long way with Proton and games they say aren't tested will quite often work but sometimes you have to be prepared to give them a tweak. Good luck! To return to topic - yes - it would be nice if the next mod manager ran on Linux too. I notice that github has one that is currently being worked on... But I have no idea when it'll be ready for use as they don't say... ****** Mods - I'm sorry! I tried to link to this and reply in the thread I started - it would be more appropriate there but I can't do it. Nor will it successfully cut and paste so I give lots of apologies and if this irritates you perhaps move it here : But I read that question and felt sad that we hadn't been able to help. They're new here. I should have seen it. I haven't forgotten how lonely gaming on Linux can feel when you start out... Thanks!
  7. That's interesting. I've taken more notice of the Bethesda mods since moving to Linux - at first it was very difficult to get a mod organiser to play nicely but eventually I got Vortex stable so had no need of Bethesda mods - I like being able to say thank you to the mod builders and I enjoy the exchange with them. Sometimes one can be useful spotting bugs and I like doing that too. So, it's only really sucked me in again because the new system was mod organiser free until yesterday. There were a few mods I really, really missed.
  8. There's much to be said for being able to mod directly to the game like that but it really needs the mods to be stand alone - if they rely on other content it's a nightmare trying to find that other content. I pretty well loathe their search mechanism. But then I pretty much loathe everyone's search mechanisms...
  9. Skyrim SE - while I finish getting the mods sorted - new PC. I'm playing snatches of it between installing stuff. Actually, I'm using some of the alternative start mods (to live another life) and just playing until I die - no saving. It's hilarious sometimes and sometimes very very exciting. Last game was being attacked on a ship... survived that OK but the ship didn't. Spent ages staring out at where it ought to have been... sank presumably...
  10. I find not being able to turn off some of that CC slightly irksome. But I'm pretty sure I can deselect the whole caboodle via the DLC tab on Steam however, I'm not going to test that theory just at the moment as I've just got the whole thing stable and as we use ASDL here with a download speed measure in days (I'm not joking!) I'd rather not try to prove that just now... I do sympathise though. I agree that it would be nice to be able to switch some of it on and off. I found that if you start a new profile it will want to download the whole lot again (goodbye a vast bit of my life!) but if you quit and then return to the game it doesn't continue the download and you can then choose which ones to download. One of the modders created a whole load of patches too which means that the CC doesn't automatically start and that improved my gaming experience a great deal too. But that might not work for you... it depends on your perception of it and your gaming style. I've been gaming for a long time too. I love games - particularly rpgs but I have to admit the best 'game' right now is getting them to run on Linux... I saw elsewhere that you talked about writing text based games but our connection today is so wonky that I couldn't bear just now to watch it sloshing about while I tried to find the post. I can't help thinking that sometimes being on the other end of gaming (ie modding, writing, voice acting, bug testing etc etc) might be a way of finding new enthusiasm... maybe... @HeyYou - if you stop by again; I hope you're feeling better!
  11. Having been without a mod organiser for a bit, I'm tempted to conclude that perhaps the OP is on Linux (one of the more obscure ones) and perhaps they mean it would be nice to see more of the mods that are uploaded to Nexus, uploaded to Bethesda as well so they could avoid using a mod organizer (or a manual install!) If that's what they mean, then they really, really, really have my sympathy... But I missed both the telekinesis class and the telepathy one because I didn't know when and where they were being held... and no one told me...
  12. I installed MO2 - works fine. However, all my saves disappeared. There weren't many as this is a new machine and I'd started a new game to try out the Steam installation. But I have no idea where - or more importantly - how they went... So, if anyone tries MO2 on Linux then back up your saves if they're important. There was probably some small print somewhere I didn't bother to read...
  13. The first game I ever played on a computer was on the university's computer and it was backgammon. But the first game on my own machine - a ZX81 - was The Warlock of Firetop Mountain. I wouldn't describe it as my favourite though. I think Morrowind has to be 'up there' along with Baldur's Gate I &2. I recently tried playing Ultima IX: Ascension but I struggled with it. The first time through though - in 1999 - I thought it was amazing.
  14. I have a new Linux PC. Steam is now installed along with the games I play via Steam but so far I haven't installed a mod organiser. On my previous machine (also Linux ) I've used both Vortex and Mod Organizer - though not at once! I'm on Ubuntu Mantic Minotaur at present. At the moment I'm using the Bethesda mods but there are a some mods from here that I miss... and that solution won't work for Morrowind and Oblivion. I also play Baldur's Gate I & II via Steam but I'm happy to manually mod those... always have. Any Linux gamers here who've recently tried Vortex , MO or Wrye Bash?
  15. I have a slight issue over navigation. I didn't find it easy to get back to the mods and escape the forum. Home brings me back here. So does Nexus Mods (I thought that would definitely be mods). I eventually got there via 'explore' when I'd run out off things to click on. Might be nice if there was a clear signpost or at least someone tells me how I do get back there... I'm glad you all survived BTW - such migration is a nightmare...
  16. I'm running Vortex 1.4.17 apparently. It has some idiosyncratic behaviour in that it won't launch via my desktop - I have to download something from Nexus and that will launch it. But apart from that, it's fine. I'm curious if any Linux user is managing to run anything later than that and if so what you did. I remember that my last update to Vortex was somewhat exciting... I'm on Ubuntu 22.04.1 LTS
  17. If you give it a go, get each bit stable before trying the next bit. I'd advise starting with Steam and Proton and then moving on to Lutris and Vortex. Whatever you do, don't let Vortex update itself - that way lies gnashing of teeth and wailing. I try very very hard not to add too many mods at once so that I'm sure each bit works and I use Vortex profiles in order to help me organise things a little more. I don't really think about being on a Linux box because the OS fades into the background in a way that Windows never did for me. However, if things go wrong, there's always the terminal window and the ability to kill a process. I do occasionally have need of that in SkyrimSE because of freezing. I had the same problem in Windows so it doesn't seem like a big deal. And I save often!
  18. I run Skyrim SE on Linux. First I had to let Steam update and as I also use ASDL and it's extremely slow, that took ages. I ran out of time on the AE update so had to finish those downloads the next day. I was then able to run AE. It ran without any issues so I then purchased the additional content. That uses the Creation Club download in game to deliver those purchases and that also took ages and ages and ages. However, it all runs flawlessly. I can see an improvement in performance and I'm very pleased. I also like some the additional bits via the addon purchase so I'm happy with that too. I was braced for issues - just in case - but actually it was a non-event and everything runs perfectly.
  19. If you mean do people running Linux manage to add mods to their games then yes. I've used Vortex via Lutris and on occasion when I feel like torturing myself I've even manually modded games running on Steam via Linux. I wouldn't use Windows if you paid me to. If you mean have I managed to build any mods for any of the games I run on Steam via Linux then no, I haven't. My days of writing any code at all are well and truly over! Really, running Steam games on a Linux box now is no big deal. It used to be quite exciting - more exciting than the games sometimes but it's fairly tame now...
  20. I've just started playing Morrowind seriously again after several years. I'd forgotten just how hard it is finding your way around and how annoying the signposts were. Thank you (many times over) for this! Endorsed with gratitude.
  21. AvamePasse - never mind the service plan... if this is just a few month's old then it's still under guarantee. Either they fix it, or it's not fit for purpose in which case it needs to be replaced or you need to be refunded. Just suppose that you bought it *just* to play Skyrim then you'd be seriously fed up! In any case, you bought the computer to use it; no one said you'd need to learn about how it works inside first! People drive cars all the time; very few can take them apart or even know how they operate. Ditto washing machines.
  22. @shumkar - correct. Vortex doesn't recognise a game installed after you've installed Vortex. You have to set up symbolic links which is no great deal once you find where the games are and where Vortex thinks the games 'should' be in 'pretend Windows'. @mkienenb - re M&M - you sound over that just like I sound over Baldur's Gate! If you ever do try SkyrimSE then there's a mod for Daggerfall. It's very clever as it feels just like the original looks... The story is really good despite the graphics but it was story that made BG... @Hey You. My husband ran Linux when everyone around him was running Windows. However, like you I put up with Windows for your same reasons. I liked 7 in any case. I got Windows 10 during chemo but even in the haze realised it was gathering data. I switched off as much as I could but Cortana was very persistent and I found it hard to be methodical. I'd notice it running in the background and it drove me to despair. I feel the same about Google and Youtube. I don't use either but every so often I notice they've managed to stick a cookie on my PC and I get really, really fed up. I feel that this is my machine and they've come in without being asked... With Windows 10 I always felt it wasn't mine and as Bill Gates didn't pay anything towards it, it really annoyed me! You should see my Android. I've switched off as much Google as I can and once the guarantee runs out, I'm going to try turning it into Linux... That'll teach it!
  23. @shumkar At least I get past the introductory vid! @mkienenb Re Oldrim SkyrimSE - I think I'd do what you're doing and get Oldrim to work first before giving Bethesda some more cash... It is more stable and there aren't the complaints about audio issues which I'm seriously impressed you haven't had... I didn't pay for SE, as I'd bought Oldrim via Steam I was given it. Anyway, I felt all feeble after listening to you two flexing Linux muscle so I did the symlinks to Vortex for Oldrim... My husband tried to help out but by then I was almost there and eventually completed it. We all danced... the dog barked. It was loud. However, the bad news is that SkyUI won't run and I think SKSE has a problem... The game runs fine though. And I managed to add Live Another Life so onwards and upwards... I'll have another look at SKSE and try to figure what its issue is. I apologise in advance if I 'disappear' we're having a roof put on and some building done... it's a bit like a rehearsal for a film about trench warfare... Totally OT - Re Might and Magic - I think I had something called Heroes of Might and Magic which shumkar mentioned - is that the same Might and Magic? Take care both!
  24. I see what you mean by getting your hands on the things. My husband thought that bitcoin was the reason the cards are becoming hard to get hold of but it looks like it's a number of reasons. The link you gave was very useful for the cards and explaining what has happened over prices and availability. I'm going to try very hard to be patient for a few months. In any case, I may be forced to be patient because there simply aren't the supplies. But at least we know it's no new computer just yet - it's do something to update this one. BTW patience is not my thing... it never was if I'm honest but cancer has made me even more DO IT NOW!!! But you're right - it does *require* some patience... I'll try my best!
  25. I know. I've seen you in action and I've worked with people like you. They allowed us to go around in blissful ignorance of the techie parts of the technology because they knew their stuff. It freed us up to know our stuff. I'll take a look at your suggestions. Thanks again for the advice. I really do appreciate it very much indeed. I wanted advice from a gamer because at least they know where I'm coming from.
