Adding mods through Bethesda **and** Vortex (especially on Linux)
zixi replied to zixi's topic in Skyrim's Skyrim SE
I've just done a few experiments and I hope that anjenthedog is not on the same time zone as me or that's a late one! Games added via Bethesda in the game*, show up in Vortex. And disabled in the game are recorded as such by Vortex. My husband (who is the ***ex*** software developer - just programs for fun now) - is convinced that the two programs will be accessing the same instance of information - mod name, place in the list etc etc and he thinks that is held by the game. He says if it isn't it would be a nightmare... And I've now been subjected to a diatribe about being too strongly coupled. So, if that's true then it really doesn't matter where I add or delete... Thanks both of you for the insights! Even my husband thought it was an interesting question and his experience of Skyrim consists of not being able to get out of the cave after the Alduin attack... He thinks building software is much more fun than playing! *I added anjenthedog's favourite Waterview inside the game and confirm it does show up in Vortex... -
shumkar - I think we Linux gamers need to stick together! There are so few of us; and I agree - it's nice to share Linux experiences! Anyway, my game is no longer broken but I'm not running either SKSE or SkyUI. I've gone back to an old save with lots and lots of mods and it appears to be very stable and exits cleanly. I'm using one of GloriousEggroll's versions of Proton. I'm intending to put the rest of the missing mods back on a few at a time to see when/if it breaks. Then I may go back to seeing how much I can run with SKSE and SkyUI... I'm actually getting to like SkyUI! Your English is extremely good so you have nothing to apologise for! I need to apologise for not being clearer!

Adding mods through Bethesda **and** Vortex (especially on Linux)
zixi replied to zixi's topic in Skyrim's Skyrim SE
@anjenthedog - Thanks for replying! I think I need to be clearer. When I was using both Windows 7 and 10 I added mods using Vortex and Bethesda without noticing any issues but I'm using Linux now - I don't have Windows at all on anything. I think my question is really about where the ultimate control of the game lies - is it with the game or with Vortex? I suspect that although you can disable mods inside the game that Vortex can't 'see' any you add inside the game. I'm trying that now. It isn't really an issue unless you add something in Vortex which depends on something added via the game... But I'm wondering if adding in both places might add to the instability. Running SkyrimSE on Linux is sort of a game in itself - it can get broken in lots of very interesting ways... -
Ah ha - yes - now that does sound like a useful thing to try... Thank you! re: If it works don't touch it - we also say: If it ain't broke don't fix it! Dreadful grammar, of course' but it means the same thing.
-
@shumkar I have no idea how SkyrimSE ended up windowed... However, I do know how to fix it. If I run the game and it goes into its original first menu I can use the settings there to set screen resolution etc. However, once I use SKSE etc etc, it doesn't go through that menu so I have to force it to reacquire the game so that it asks me to do the set-up. I'm not sure if I've been very clear there... Switching between Proton versions is easy, I just use Steam to choose via the game's 'properties' tab and they appear as drop-downs. I was about to give up on SKSE and SkyUI as even with very few mods the game is unstable... but I've now found that I've lost sound when I switch to an alternative Proton setting so I need to sort that one first! The good news is that Live Another Life is absolutely rock solid! I don't know what I'd do without that mod as I don't think I could bear to sit through the opening scenes every time I test a new set up... as it is I can't now be bothered to set up a proper character and I end up with a large male Nord called Sven... As I always play female characters it gave me a shock when he jumped from a height and said the equivalent of 'ouch'... I nearly jumped out of my seat wondering where the male voice had come from! Poor Sven... edited to add SkyUI was added through Vortex. Vortex is totally stable on my set up...

Will someone please finish the LGNPC mod? Anyone?
zixi replied to DoggOward's topic in Morrowind's Discussion
Agreed many times over! I sometimes despair for anyone new who gets more abbreviations than that thrown at them. Maybe original posters (OPs) could get into the habit of writing the thing in full with the abbreviation in brackets so that everyone afterwards can use the abbreviation without having to worry about all those people who haven't got the slightest notion what it's all about... LGNPC = Less Generic Non-Player Characters TLSH = Twin Lamps and Slave Hunters -
On Windows (10 and 7) I added mods via Bethesda (ie in the game) and via Vortex. When I switched to Linux I added mods solely via Bethesda because I wasn't running Vortex. I'm now running Vortex via Lutris and I'm wondering if I'm contributing to instability by adding mods both ways. Or doesn't it matter?

RE outnumbered - yes it feels like we must represent about .000000000000002% of the users... I sometimes think we should have a thread where we can go and exchange how much time we've spent reinstalling our games or beating up Wine... I have noticed though that Linux users sometimes show more interest when things are broken than when they actually work... Anyway, today has started in a very interesting way as SkyrimSE refused to run SkyUI. SkyUI insisted that something had overwritten it. I validated the game on Steam. I disabled every mod, reinstalled SkyUI and it ran fine but for some reason in windowed mode. I checked every setting on Steam and tried Skyrim (Oldrim) in case it was a Steam setting. I also found that SkySE would run in full-screen using other versions of Proton... so I forced it to reacquire and all is fine... I'm not totally sure why I don't just give up on SKSE and SkyUI as Kriemen has made a mod for the lavenders which mean I can 'plant' them using a spell! So there's no need. But I have grown fascinated by which mods make my game unstable. I don't think it's a particular mod. I get the impression it's just some mods don't like each other much. I'm also beginning to think that some 'realize' they're on Linux really and throw a tantrum... SKSE and SkyUI are less necessary too because I've got the Creation Kit running on Linux using Proton so in theory I could just fix these problems myself... but the idea of actually writing stuff doesn't fill me with joy... I think I prefer being a critic...

Great!!! It's good to know that other people are using Linux for gaming as well. Not so 'lonely' after all.
-
I haven't changed anything at all I'm sad to say. So I really don't know why it's suddenly working. As I say, I went to the SkyUI setup and switched the icons on and off a few times, changed the font size and changed it back and then reloaded a game... I've tried it only on oakflesh... I've had issues with SkyUI's setup menu not appearing in game even though the menu itself is fine. I think you have to give it a few seconds or so to be recognised maybe... I can be extremely impatient...
-
The active effect icon is now working. No idea why. I did the old computer hack trick of fiddling with the settings, switching on and off a few times etc etc... It's funny how often the on/off switch and/or a reboot fixes issues...
-
No, the Active Effects icon isn't working - tried candlelight and oakflesh. I think I may try putting SkyUI on Skyrim to see what it's meant to look like! I'm not convinced that the instability of the game is caused by SKSE and SkyUI. With all mods disabled apart from LAL and a clean game started both SkyUI and SKSE play nicely with GloriousEggroll's custom Proton. It may not even be a particular mod that causes the instability; it may be caused by the fact I do run rather a lot of mods and there is some 'disagreement' along the way! Anyway, with just SkyUI and SKSE and of course LAL, the game doesn't freeze and it quits cleanly... so far! I agree that clean exits weren't always possible on Windows either; and Skyrim - on Windows - (as opposed to SkyrimSE) never did exit cleanly for me after I'd added the DLC. It sounds like you have way, way, way more Linux experience than I have! I dual-booted for a bit but I hated it and I'm much happier without Windows.

Perhaps ads are not as lucrative as they once were so you need more and more of them. Perhaps advertisers are realising that maybe on-line ads don't work as well as they thought they might. flickr is making a loss despite the many, many free accounts and countless adverts it has (less than 1% of its users pay anything) which suggests to me that ads alone don't float the boat... https://eu.usatoday.com/story/tech/2019/12/19/flickr-ceo-writes-brutally-honest-email-financial-support/2704698001/ Given how little it costs to go ad-free for life at Nexus I'd be surprised if the income per user via adverts was that impressive... Of course, their idea of doing the sums and mine might not be the same...

@shumkar - I don't remember *ever* seeing Active Effects icons on SkyUI but I haven't used it for years. I don't have anything in the current new game to show an active effect either so I'll try that out and report back. I can say that with SKSE and SkyUI installed the game is unstable. It doesn't exit cleanly (I'm assuming you know Linux but for anyone else that doesn't I'll explain I have to open a terminal and 'kill' the game) and is prone to freezing which it doesn't do without them. I have no idea whether it's one or just the combination or if it's interacting with a mod. I'll have to disable everything again and see if I can find the issue. To be clear, I started out on all this because I just wanted to use Jaxonz Positioner so that I could 'plant' Kriemen's retextured lavender and deathbells... But I got fascinated by how to get it all to play nicely together. I hate to say this but I don't like SkyUI much - I'm too used to the old system so it really, really slows me down and the icons annoy me... I'm not sure there's is any such thing as the perfect icon... It's clever - but not for me so if I can position Kriemen's flowers and then go back to the old menu system - I will... if SKSE is making the game unstable then I'll revert to the non-SKSE *if* it'll load... Using the method I described above, the game will ask if you want SKSE or not... ie you don't have to load by the SKSE.exe - this will do that for you. GloriousEggroll's solution is very elegant! I've been using Linux a few months so I'm no expert at it but I must say, getting these things to work has taught me a lot and it's fun!!! Ubuntu (my flavour of Linux) is extremely robust.

especially when your finger is sore from burning it on a saucepan handle... what were they thinking? :ermm: @LadyMilla - thank you!
-
Maybe they're all too busy building mods! I tend to comment only when I can play the thing! Or help finding bugs...
-
If anyone else wants to try this then the simplest solution appears to be GloriousEggroll's custom build https://github.com/GloriousEggroll/proton-ge-custom/releases/tag/4.10-GE-3 This is a custom built instance of Proton which is designed to act with SKSE and therefore SkyUI. You need to download SKSE first from siverlock https://skse.silverlock.org/ Make sure you download the correct version!!! And follow the instructions really carefully. Ditto GloriousEggroll's instructions. Eventually, SkyrimSE will start and ask if you want to use SKSE... ProtonFixes will slosh about for ages if you let it but at some point it's fine to click on Yes (it will launch SKSE) again and all should be well. There are other renaming fixes just as the one mentioned above by HeyYou and elsewhere (do a web search). Just don't try that when you're in a rush - you need to keep your wits about you - it's easy to destroy the game... If that happens you'll need to reinstall... I haven't done many in-game hours with this solution but I have tested it with SkyUI and Jaxonx Positioner (SkyrimSE version) and it works fine on **my** rig! However, I really don't care if things go wrong and I have to re-install... and I've had a lot of experience adding mods *without* a mod manager! I don't suggest messing about with it if it'll make you cry if it goes wrong... :whistling: If all you want to do is game then don't mess about with this. I'm rapidly enjoying getting things to work on Linux much more than actually playing the games! It might not be fun for anyone else though when things go seriously pear shaped... :ermm:
-
Hi and welcome too! It'll be interesting to see what you do! And there's always feedback here!
-
Had a quick look - that is a seriously sneaky solution... Will try it out. I began to think I was in an 'infernal' loop with this won't work there but this can't launch there thing... Thank you!!! Yet again! I didn't think about asking help from Steam!!!
-
I accept that I might be trying to do something daft but has anyone got SKSE to run under Linux? And if so how did you do it? On Linux SkyrimSE will only launch from Steam - not via Vortex - so maybe what I'm attempting is just very very silly given that SKSE has its own executable...

Have you ever played an entire game series all at once?
zixi replied to Unholypaladin's topic in Classic Games
Yes - Baldur's Gate 1, Baldur's Gate 2, Throne of Bhaal. I used to do that ever summer when I'd escaped university. I've even played the entire series on iPad but I wouldn't recommend it on iPad... @Unholypaladin - when you've played the original Daggerfall - have a go at the mod on SkyrimSE - Skygerfall - I can't bring myself to play the original Daggerfall but I absolutely loved the SkyrimSE mod! -
I'm curious. How would you persuade **most** users to make a financial contribution? For example, flickr is currently operating at a loss and may well shut down in 2020. There are too many free accounts and not enough paid subscribers. Ads alone can't keep it afloat. So what do you give people to persuade them to become paid subscribers? And please don't say a badge saying 'Pro' (as per flickr...)

My thoughts on Premium - The Site - and some misc thoughts.
zixi replied to Mixter213's topic in Site Support
I shall do even more sympathy... Maybe I'm not seeing the issue because I paid for premium while I wasn't sure how much life I had left and I wanted to say 'thank you'. But in comparison with other sites *I know* life time premium is really cheap here and I can't believe how cheap it is to get rid of ads. I understand that if you don't have the money then however cheap it is, it's too expensive but I keep going back to how will it be paid for and how can you 'persuade' people that paying premium is worth it? The same problem existed with flickr and youtube. I paid for flickr for years because I liked it (notice use of past tense). It wasn't about what I got out of it , it was about supporting something I liked. I can think of lots of solutions but they're complex and lack the elegance of this solution... I do really, really sympathise. I sympathise too that you don't want people to rant... You sound like a really nice person! But I'm afraid that ranting is something they seem to have to do when you put them on social networks... I don't have an answer for that one either... I guess if Nexus ever reaches the point that I can no longer be associated then I'll do what I've done with every other site that no longer matches my morality - I'll walk away... and that's really my only suggestion... And I sympathise if that's not possible either! -
And Season's Greetings to you as well and du bist willkommen! This is the place for mods and if you decide to build mods too then you''ve got loads of people to try them out on!

jex420 What Dukoth said and you can get an almost immediate response by submitting the file to MS for analysis. https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/wdsi/filesubmission It's free and you can submit anonymously. You're quite right not to ignore a warning and to seek advice but games are notorious for causing that kind of flag and of course they're also very good as a medium for spreading viruses - so it's best to be safe...
