I'm also confused about how to find forums attached to games. Skyrim comes under 'S' - that's fine. However, I wondered if there was a forum for the original Baldur's Gate (1&2) but it doesn't come under 'B' - which is fine. It's old. But I can't see BG3 there either... so why is Skyrim there but not BG3? I also wonder why there isn't a link on the mod page to the specific forum - ie the Skyrim mod page has a link to the Skyrim forum... it's always best to have multiple ways to find things where a clear path isn't already there. Users then can use the method they like best...

Me too. Maybe it's beyond Bethesda - maybe it's the internet. It seems to be turning into (has turned into?) one great big monetising monster.

Not sure if anyone else noticed this but the mods via Bethesda went offline a little while ago while they made alterations. I've just been there to see what is happening. There are now lots of pretty pictures which via my dial-up turn into loads of swishy things for ages until it catches up. It has this disconcerting habit of popping pictures in and out. I somehow managed to be popped back to Steam and the only way to escape was by quitting the game. However, it now knows the load order for each save and cheerfully offers to reuse that one or change it to something else... It didn't explains what its criteria might be... You can now click on a modder's name and it list their mods. Great! I've wanted that functionality for ages. However, the search mechanism is a couple of sandwiches short of a picnic still and finds all kinds of things. A search for Sidrat for example, found the Sidrat mods but other stuff which made no sense at all... maybe it was searching on the first three letters - who knows... It also now lists space used and space available but I haven't the faintest idea what this means. I feel a kind of strange despair with Bethesda mods. It really isn't their fault that I'm obsessed with Linux but as Vortex refuses to play with Linux at the moment and Mod Organizer has quit the building for the time being at least, discovering that Bethesda mods have also got it in for me is just a smidgen sad... And it's Christmas... I'm very close to modding manually... again... What's happened to usability?! Anyway, I'm curious as to how other people are getting on with it. If anyone cares to share their views; I'd like to hear them. It could be that my issues are caused by Linux in which case all is fine. I'll live with it. Oh, I forgot - there are many, many categories... quite clearly the designer(s) has/have never read a book about classification and the problems that brings...

Right! That's it; I ban you for typing words into the forum thread...

First Person vs. Third Person.....A perspective on Perspectives.
zixi replied to edgeburner's topic in PC Gaming
I'm impressed with those people who swap between perspectives. I don't do that unless I want to check my armour and it's like looking in the mirror - there ought to be mirrors in TES. I wouldn't be able to role play that swap easily... I find it a bit distracting when a game itself cuts to third person - as it's me there if you see what I mean... -
And is it just me, or is navigating here from scratch really awkward? I had to find a previous comment and find it that way... I can't figure out where it actually is... It's now added to my 'follow' list which may help *me*... but when I go to site feed back (where the breadcrumbs say it is) I end up in some parallel universe...

Just seen the latest update about the site and the comments about posts made regarding feedback to the mods. I've noted that the intention is eventually to include those. I think it would be a shame if those comments never make it to people's post counts as some users are really active in those comment sections and sometimes the comments look as if they're really useful to the modders. This is just a hope (a vote if you like) that those comments do get incorporated in the count. It doesn't seem fair to me for people who don't want or need to post in the forums to be excluded from the count...

Just curious really... I bought a new PC recently. It's meant installing stuff all over again. So recently I've been playing the game which is getting the mod manager to work nicely. Now everything is working well, I'm wondering about what the next game challenge to be so I'm thinking maybe Starfield (currently silver at ProtonDB) or Baldur's Gate 3 (currently gold at ProtonDB). I've avoided the latter because I absolutely adore BGI and II and so far everything that says it's like a BGIII has been bitterly disappointing... So, what are you playing? What kind of fixes have you had to resort to? I'm on Ubuntu 23.10 - Mantic Minotaur BTW.

Meme today; fact tomorrow... To put my 'expectation' in perspective - I gave up putting of the purchase of a new PC for the arrival of TES VI and bought one anyway. At this rate, I'll be on to a new one when it finally emerges in any case. What scares me is that Todd Howard has mentioned retirement. He was sooo young when this all started out. And, I don't really 'game' - I 'escape'; so I 'escape' to very specific places - ones that don't pose worse problems than I'm dealing with... so I play a very small subset of a subset of a subset of rpg... so there's not much hope of a new game that will inspire me to hope it comes soon - except for TES VI. Anyway, which game are **you** looking forward to?

Welcome Zoedfor. You're not alone with that start! My first computer was a ZX81. It ran from cassette and was horrendously unstable... There's lots of people to help if you get stuck and remember there's no such thing as a stupid question! Everyone was new at this once.

How did I miss this? Some wonderful swords here that I'd love if I wasn't a obsessed with bows. Am I allowed to resurrect the thread with a sort of reverse Umbra - it releases dead thread souls... If so then my sword is called The Pen - because it's mightier than any sword and it'll write the foe out of history...

What happened to 'travel hopefully'? And 'optimism of the will and pessimism of the intellect' ? And to be fair, you didn't say I had to be realistic about my anticipations!

One year closer to TES VI... Perhaps... maybe... with any luck...

Here, have this hand warmer. Let's make a pact. Here's a bucket of magic virtual snow. You creep up on pickysaurus and lob one at him and I'll throw one at LadyMilla (who has been way too quiet if you ask me)... Then - and here is the coup de grace - we both aim one at The Dark One who started this and is now skulking in the warm virtual kitchen... See if you can whack the snowball with Sunder - I'm assuming you still have Wraithguard? I'll fire one with the Bow of Shadows - that'll keep him guessing. And then we run like hell - I've got The Sidrat parked just round the corner - or there's Arvak if you want to be traditional. Don't worry about me - I'll teleport out if I have to but I've also got this ward spell... and I can call a dragon if I need to... Don't angst over the snow - it's magic. I spent yesterday concocting the recipe. It won't thaw and the snowball stays in tact until it hits its target when it explodes into loads of soft flakes which are very very cold. But no one gets hurt. PS And whoever designed the 'recently used' emoticon feature then you can have a star! Excellent bit of usability that...

Pagafyr - you're so busy throwing snowballs on your own that I've been able to creep up behind you and splat you with the snow we've just had before it goes all mushy and yukky... Happy December!

What else could I do to fix my windows 10 pc?
zixi replied to InDarkestNight's topic in Hardware and software discussion
The same people who trust organisations with all their logins? Regarding reinstallation - have you tried to do that? I seem to remember that reinstallation often caused Windows to attempt a repair which sometimes did the trick. Maybe Windows savvy people (I'm Linux based) can confirm if that's still the case. If I get to the reinstallation stage then I tend to want to wipe the thing, reformat the hard drive and start fresh. I've found the decision between hardware failure and software failure hard to work out sometimes so I always want to rule out an issue with the hard drive first as it's the easiest for me to solve... Not sure if you know this but if you don't have access to a Windows OS disc then MS will supply an image via download. If you do reinstall then I hope it fixes as easily as possible! -
I agree with HeyYou. There are people out there who seem to take an absolute delight in being spiteful. I don't have an explanation. I did some work once to see how far people are influenced by the nature of the comment that comes before the one they make and predictably, if someone says something negative, subsequently others are likely to follow that 'lead'. The data we produced was too 'iffy' to publish and I never got round to redoing it. But I bet someone has. In your position, I'd educate myself as best I could (been there - done that!) and try to find a programming community that isn't too self-obsessed... or contains some nice people. They exist too. Some are so very generous with their time and they're altruistic. It isn't about how they look, it's about how they can help. In the forums I've built and managed there's been the opportunity to block content from people you find obnoxious. I expect the same is true here. It won't stop you from seeing their nonsense if someone quotes them, but it might help. I'm so used to being in charge of forums that blocking doesn't dawn on me as a solution for myself. But I suggest it as a method for not being wound up. If it's any comfort, I've noticed on some forums that mods have started stepping in when a brand new member posts to the wrong place or asks something a long term member doesn't like. So they've intervened when there have been responses like you've necroed a topic or you've posted in the wrong place or that question has been asked before... I've actually got a bit more hopeful for the web...

First Person vs. Third Person.....A perspective on Perspectives.
zixi replied to edgeburner's topic in PC Gaming
Interesting question. First person in games where it exists. However, in Baldur's Gate I&II it just isn't; and I scarcely notice. I'm not sure I'd have much patience with a modern third person perspective though... BG I & II are kind of 'special'. -
I'm a bit late to the party so I'm sorry. I've successfully run Vortex on Ubuntu. However, at some point it would no longer launch from my desktop - I had to launch it by instigating a download from Nexus. I never fixed the problem because it wasn't much 'broke'. However, my attempts to install Vortex on my new machine - running exactly the same version of Ubuntu - have failed (so far). The difference is that I never installed the original OS on this machine - it was done by the company building the rig so I'm not exactly sure what they did. They also installed a stable long support version of Ubuntu (Jammy Jellyfish) whereas I was running Mantic Minotaur on the other machine and I then updated this machine to Mantic Minotaur. There may be something in all that. I tried two ways of installing Vortex - one through effectively a manual install then two attempts (different ones) through Lutris and so far I have been unsuccessful. The first time it installed but then when it was relaunched it didn't... The second time it just burst into tears and refused to run at all. However, I have successfully installed Mod Organizer 2 using rockerbacon's version and instructions at github. It runs perfectly for Skyrim though whinges about some of the mods (I ignore that - it runs... so who cares). However, so far I haven't got the instances to work so I can't use it on Morrowind - just SkyrimSE. I may just give up and manually mod Morrowind... If you get Vortex to work then it's great but you may well have to set up symlinks (symbolic links) and that isn't easy if you're new to Linux. Lutris has a version which is supposed to recognise your games library in Steam but that version threw a tantrum for me and I gave up (for the time being). Just in case I sound like I give up easily - I don't but we use ASDL here and download speeds would make most of you weep. I tend to do big downloads overnight but that isn't always practicable if I'm needed to press a button or something. I'm not sure how many people here game on Linux. You may get some help from a Linux forum and Steam - there's a Linux community there who are very helpful and knowledgeable about Linux. There are many many many Linux gamers out there and some phenomenally talented and patient software engineers who seem determined to make it all work on Linux - rockerbacon is one such person but you'll come across others. rockerbacon's Linux version of MO2 is here: https://github.com/rockerbacon/modorganizer2-linux-installer Follow the instructions extremely carefully! If you get Vortex to work then never ever let it update! I game on Linux because I really want to and it is getting easier but one has to accept that most games aren't built with Linux in mind so it requires some extra help. Steam has come a long way with Proton and games they say aren't tested will quite often work but sometimes you have to be prepared to give them a tweak. Good luck! To return to topic - yes - it would be nice if the next mod manager ran on Linux too. I notice that github has one that is currently being worked on... But I have no idea when it'll be ready for use as they don't say... ****** Mods - I'm sorry! I tried to link to this and reply in the thread I started - it would be more appropriate there but I can't do it. Nor will it successfully cut and paste so I give lots of apologies and if this irritates you perhaps move it here : But I read that question and felt sad that we hadn't been able to help. They're new here. I should have seen it. I haven't forgotten how lonely gaming on Linux can feel when you start out... Thanks!

That's interesting. I've taken more notice of the Bethesda mods since moving to Linux - at first it was very difficult to get a mod organiser to play nicely but eventually I got Vortex stable so had no need of Bethesda mods - I like being able to say thank you to the mod builders and I enjoy the exchange with them. Sometimes one can be useful spotting bugs and I like doing that too. So, it's only really sucked me in again because the new system was mod organiser free until yesterday. There were a few mods I really, really missed.
-
There's much to be said for being able to mod directly to the game like that but it really needs the mods to be stand alone - if they rely on other content it's a nightmare trying to find that other content. I pretty well loathe their search mechanism. But then I pretty much loathe everyone's search mechanisms...

Skyrim SE - while I finish getting the mods sorted - new PC. I'm playing snatches of it between installing stuff. Actually, I'm using some of the alternative start mods (to live another life) and just playing until I die - no saving. It's hilarious sometimes and sometimes very very exciting. Last game was being attacked on a ship... survived that OK but the ship didn't. Spent ages staring out at where it ought to have been... sank presumably...

I find not being able to turn off some of that CC slightly irksome. But I'm pretty sure I can deselect the whole caboodle via the DLC tab on Steam however, I'm not going to test that theory just at the moment as I've just got the whole thing stable and as we use ASDL here with a download speed measure in days (I'm not joking!) I'd rather not try to prove that just now... I do sympathise though. I agree that it would be nice to be able to switch some of it on and off. I found that if you start a new profile it will want to download the whole lot again (goodbye a vast bit of my life!) but if you quit and then return to the game it doesn't continue the download and you can then choose which ones to download. One of the modders created a whole load of patches too which means that the CC doesn't automatically start and that improved my gaming experience a great deal too. But that might not work for you... it depends on your perception of it and your gaming style. I've been gaming for a long time too. I love games - particularly rpgs but I have to admit the best 'game' right now is getting them to run on Linux... I saw elsewhere that you talked about writing text based games but our connection today is so wonky that I couldn't bear just now to watch it sloshing about while I tried to find the post. I can't help thinking that sometimes being on the other end of gaming (ie modding, writing, voice acting, bug testing etc etc) might be a way of finding new enthusiasm... maybe... @HeyYou - if you stop by again; I hope you're feeling better!

Having been without a mod organiser for a bit, I'm tempted to conclude that perhaps the OP is on Linux (one of the more obscure ones) and perhaps they mean it would be nice to see more of the mods that are uploaded to Nexus, uploaded to Bethesda as well so they could avoid using a mod organizer (or a manual install!) If that's what they mean, then they really, really, really have my sympathy... But I missed both the telekinesis class and the telepathy one because I didn't know when and where they were being held... and no one told me...

I installed MO2 - works fine. However, all my saves disappeared. There weren't many as this is a new machine and I'd started a new game to try out the Steam installation. But I have no idea where - or more importantly - how they went... So, if anyone tries MO2 on Linux then back up your saves if they're important. There was probably some small print somewhere I didn't bother to read...
