How sick. The one person I'd have expected to not sell out, sold out.

Modding has already taken the leap and it is only a matter of time before it crashes into the ground and becomes nothing but a bastardization of what it once was. Heavy-handed DRM, restricted modding resources, publisher-controlled distribution platforms, and of course, pay-walls are in the future of modding.

Pat yourself on the back for being one of the biggest contributors to the death of one of the best aspects of PC gaming.

Paid modders? Community involvement? More like 3rd-party DLC mills.

How disappointing.

The only logical response to this I've managed to come up with is: If your life has evolved in ways that makes modding for the joy of modding to no longer be appealing or relevant to you...you need to stop. The community will miss you, but it will survive. Making room for new people, new ideas, is the natural order of things. Take the skills you've honed in the modding scene and make your own IPs, your own brands, and I hope you make millions for it, if not a solid living.

Keep modding functionally immune from legal battles, corporate avarice and manipulation from outside the fence is critical to keeping it fruitful and fertile.

I really liked your post. This is the thing I'd like to add to it that has been bothering me as the conversation here has run off into crazy places.
BattleyaxStudios wrote: @Brasscatcher, who are you to tell someone that they need to stop doing anything. If you can't afford to take the time to do a hobby, then getting money for it would help make it worthwhile. If you don't like it then you don't have to download, but don't tell them they shouldn't make mods because they aren't doing it purely out of passion anymore.

Ahh, and who are *they* to demand that something we have always done for fun and the challenge of bending a thing into new shapes purely for amusement somehow now merits being called "work" and deserving of compensation? Funny how everyone was okay right up until corporate money was on the table. Those who wanted to mod did so, those who had to think about their financial situation, or had just moved on with their lives without modding had done so...only to come running back because Valve flashed some dosh under their noses.

This is a two-edged sword, friend. I reiterate: If the game no long has a place in your life until some sprinkles money on it: You. Are. Doing. It. Wrong. If you genuinely think you're going to put food on the table making mods you're crazy. Double-crazy if you think you "deserve" it.

Thank You! Dark0ne, the staff, Modders, and other contributors for your hard work, quality content and dedication to this community! I love Skyrim now with the ability to mod and improve the game experience. You have made a mediocre game filled with flaws bugs and poor textures into some thing worth playing, Thank you! Too all the Trolls :P bite my shinny metal @$$

Poor Chesko. He sold away his rights without knowing it. And assumed that everyone else was just as ignorant. (ignorant as in "uneducated in this area", not intended insultingly) Hopefully anyone else thinking of going pay realizes this same issue: you lose all right to your work when you sell it to Valve. If you're ok with that, good luck.

The problem is that Valve IS culpable if it sells "defective" mods, using "stolen" work or trying to sell a mod that has another pay mod as a pre-req. Their only hope is to bury you in lawyers and outspend you to make it go away. Which is stupid, since a much smaller pay-off gets the same results.

Whatever the Nexus people do with the money they earn - in my oppinion, the site´s running good and after all, we can be happy that there´s things like this community. Getting mods for a game was not that comfortable some time ago.

Anyway, what i wanted to say is - i don´t need "to-the-point" answers and there´s surely a good amount of people who think the same - as long as everything´s running well there´s no problem.
For the record - the only thing i was asked for is to turn off my Adblocker - nobody told me this site would not run without a £1.29 "donation".

Is this site actually registered as a business? Because it seems clear now that people behind this site are actually profiting and this steam drama lately has exposed this.
hellosanta wrote: As far as I know, that's how much money it costed to run this site, not that they make that much out of this site. If you have read previous posts and all, you'd know that Nexus was in serious financial problem and Dark0ne has to put his own money to make the site running smoothly. And the ad we see on the site? That wasn't there when I first joined the community. Modding community got bigger, or at least there has been huge influx of people who want to mod their games in recent years, so Nexus has to upgrade its server and database. That costs a lot of money. Well, you can still come up with all sorts of conspiracy based on distrust for everything everyone says in Nexus. But, I understand Dark0ne taking small portion of cut from paid mods if the modders deem Nexus to be service provider and want to express thanks. Cause, you know, while admitting that modders should be compensated for their works and efforts while denying the time, work and money put into providing space where people can share mods and information for free is just dirty double standard.
modskyrimtopieces wrote: Still, offering someone around £20,000 for a simple job seems a bit odd to me if the site was in "financial difficulty".

Oh and to even offer a salary like that, this website would have to be registered as a business and pay tax accordingly.

This isn't a conspiracy theory at all, I'm just looking at this site in a logical, analytical and lawful way.
WhiskyTime wrote: I don´t even know why you insist on an answer. What does actually change for you, as a customer, if this site is registered as a buisness (and I guess it is, since the owner of Nexus is listed as "Black Tree Gaming Ltd.). Do some research before you claim there is something "fishy". The Nexus in its entirety literally could not run without ad revenue and memberships. Dont forget you are getting FREE access to literally hundreds of thousands of mods over a vast multitude of games.
hellosanta wrote: I don't know whether Nexus registered as business or not, but managing server for massive website and all is legitimate IT job. It looks easy if and only if there is no problem. And £20,000? That's average salary of college graduate in Canada. It's actually pretty disturbing of you to accuse some jobs are very simple. Looks simple to YOU, innit? Well, don't jump into conclusion purely based on how it appears to be.
modskyrimtopieces wrote: @whiskeytime

I'm not a customer. None of us are. Thats the point. Nowhere on this site are we told this is a business, yet they have paid staff with decent salaries and seem to be making money beyond ad revenue.

I see no evidence at all of "Black Tree Gaming" being a real business (how would "Black Tree Gaming" make any money anyway? Do they make games that they sell? Software that they sell? Skyrim action figures that they sell?)
"Black Tree Gaming" sounds like a cover name for a private individual (or individuals). Sounds dodgy.

This website would be called (funnily enough) www.blacktreegaming.co.uk if everything was legit.

And on the subject of server prices, £500,000 a year for this site on server storage is total rubbish. https://uk.godaddy.com/pro/windows-dedicated-server - use this link as a rough estimate. Do the math guys...

This website needs to be investigated.

http://companycheck.co.uk/company/06360077/BLACK-TREE-GAMING-LIMITED/financial-accounts#financials

Found a page for financials of "Black Tree Gaming".

Funny how assets and cash have been on the way up quite drastically since 2010, without any indication of money going out for the £250,000 "server update" or the annual £500,000 "server charge".

Come on guys this is ridiculous.

Suppose time will tell but it is somewhat comforting to know that the players at hand here do see the value of the community here. Admittedly it might be money orientated, however we can have the chance to show them there is more to modding than that.

Hey, let's see you contribute to the $500,000 annual upkeep for the nexus THAT YOU USE FOR FREE.
You're using a website for FREE and demanding that someone else PAY for something that has already been explained, that all of us adults were able to comprehend quite clearly on our first read-through of Robin's article.
At this point, I can only chalk up your incomprehension of Robin's explanation as, you're either Drunk, or you're now too emotionally invested in this to save face and back out out gracefully by apologizing.

Suppose time will tell but it is somewhat comforting to know that the players at hand here do see the value of the community here. Admittedly it might be money orientated, however we can have the chance to show them there is more to modding than that. Then maybe they will see that suffocating all aspects of the free community will stifle creativity. I hope. And we can start by using donation systems. But that's money I hear you say??? HE ONLY BENEFITS.......ONLY, if someone CHECKS THE BOX that says "Send 5% of the earning for this mod to the Nexus", there are also checkboxes to send 5% to the makers of NifSKope and Blender as well.
Why aren't you complaining about those two things possibly getting 5% whenever someone checks the box for them to receive 5% of the income?

If a modder DOESN'T check that box for The NEXUS, or NifSkope etc then the Nexus and NifSkope etc get NOTHING, ZERO, ZIP, ZILCH, NADA, NOTHING, is sent to the Nexus, NOTHING....
Do you UNDERSTAND IT YET?

The Nexus isn't getting a cut of any mods being sold on SteamWorks UNLESS THE MOD AUTHOR CHECKS THE BOX to let the Nexus have 5% of the sales as a "Thank You"
