Could a B-29 be used like an AC-130
sgtKraigO replied to sgtKraigO's topic in Fallout New Vegas's Mod Ideas
Can I get that translated to English, please. I would like to see only the bottom two turrets being used since the others would be awkward to aim at the ground (from what I can tell from anyways). -

The main purpose of the B-29 would be for bombing fortifications (obviously) and mobile artillery platform. The NCR won't be up against tanks, but remaining Legion forts. The mission that is stated in the thread I linked in a comment above is one that involves the courier traveling via Vertibird to a legion fort somewhere in Arizona and assault it with troopers in an attempt at capturing a Legion commander (possibly a new Legate). The bomber would be tasked with creating an entrance for the troops, laying down covering fire while the troopers are moving towards the fort, and halting any attempt at a Legion retreat once the NCR troops are within the fort. I don't think a howitzer should be attached to the B-29, partially because I can't see it fitting, and because it would turn it into a god weapon and the NCR wouldn't need to rely on troops nearly as much (which would make gameplay boring), just send in the B-29 to bomber the area then pick off any survivors. For the minigun I think .50 caliber explosive rounds would be best, partially because it's the largest round in the game, and something else that's slow firing and can cause large explosions but not as powerful as a howitzer. -

I was thinking that the NCR could take off some of the armour in order to lighten the aircraft so they could carry more ammo and save on fuel (not sure how possible this is though). As for the the range at which they need for safety and accuracy the only way I can see them increasing it is if they get a larger caliber minigun (possibly 50cal?) but then you run into the problem of recoil and whether or not the B-29 could handle it. Increasing the caliber from 7.62mm to 20mm (which now makes them cannons rather than gun) is actually the way that later model AC-130s were able to fly higher while still maintaining their ability to deliver firepower. As for a .50 caliber minigun on the B-29, that would be possible. I mean there are Humvee mounted .50 caliber miniguns so I'd imagine a B-29 being able to handle that. Not to mention that the B-29 was equipped with a 20mm tail cannon at one point. Is a 20mm large than a .50 caliber? O.o -

Yes but could that be for safety reasons? Didn't the Vietcong and North Vietnamese military posses weapons that could be used to shoot them down? The B-29 would be mostly used against Legionaries who can't even shoot an idle person, this will be a moving airplane. I have difficulties imagining them adapting well to this new threat from above when their equipment focuses on ground combat. Yes and yes. However, the B-29 is also a much large plane than the AC-47 so I would imagine it would need more altitude Good point, how much larger is it, and how much high should it operate at? Currently working on a project or I would look it up myself lol. -

1. Because it's for an NCR based mod, I'm sure it could be used by other factions. http://forums.nexusmods.com/index.php?/topic/710978-ncr-new-vegas/page-5 2. I'm not trying to fight a howitzer onto it, just a minigun and red glare. But due to the lack of range of the miniguns it's not very realistic. This is directed towards anyone that's reading this; if a B-29 was equipped with a 25mm or .308 minigun and a red glare or even a missile launcher, do you believe the fram of the aircraft could handle that amount of stress. Keep in mind the minigun wouldn't be used in full auto, just long bursts and the red glare/missile launcher would be used less often. .308 minigun is easy for the B-29. Remember that the AC-47 was a cargo plane. The B-29 is a bomber that was semi-armored to a certain extent. Though the red glare and missile launcher might not work out as they're still small-arms in a way. Which means they're short-ranged. what's average range for current gen US made hand held anti tank weapons that use rockets? (Non-heat seeking, lock on, etc etc) -

Unless the NCR decides to make a minigun that fires .308 rounds they might get away with using gatling lasers and tesla cannons. You wouldn't happen to know the effective range of a laser would you? ;) -

I can't picture the aircraft being able to carry large weapons with a howitzer round explosion radius. They would also have to carry the men to fire and reload, the ammunition, and a few bombs to drop. But then again I don't know the lift capacity of a B-29. What is the max range of a minigun/SMMG and and red glares? Is there anyway of extending it in the GECK? EDIT: Wikipedia says it's 133,500 lb (60,560 kg) ; 135,000 lb plus combat load Not sure what the 135,000lb plus combat load means though. -
New Reno in Fallout: New Vegas

I'm looking forward too seeing it :) -
In another thread I came up with the idea of the NCR possibly acquiring and repairing the crashed B-29 and using it in a mission. http://forums.nexusmods.com/index.php?/topic/710978-ncr-new-vegas/page-5 My question is, could it be realistically possible to attach a minigun or shoulder mounted machine gun and a grenade machine gun or a red glare and use it in a support role similar to that of an AC-130? I'm assuming the aircraft would fly lower than an AC-130. If this were possible in real life, could it be possible to replicate in NV? The way I imagine it is the player would see the bomber circling the battlefield with bullets and rockets/grenades occasionally raining down from it. When it's in the hanger one of the bottom gun turrets would be replaced with a minigun while the other would be grenade machine gun or red glare.

The Van Graffs are a large trading family that operates throughout NCR territory with their HQ being in New Reno. You'd have to some Van Graffs in the mod if you were going to do a power struggle. They would most likely attempt to kill the courier if (s)he were to enter New Reno, so I could see them sending assassins after the player while they're in lesser populated areas of the city. Also the NCR doesn't blackmail the Van Graffs or Alice McLafferty. They try to bring them in so they can be charged for their crimes but they end up being killed. -

New Reno in Fallout: New Vegas

I could see it happening diplomatically and the families would have to give up any illegal operations they have going, except casinos (although they would probably be taxed heavily) and become NCR citizens and in exchange they will get energy from Hoover Dam, protection, and law and order. Although at first they could be tempted to accept, after some secret missions the player goes on too sway the families into either accepting or not accepting the deal they will reach a conclusion. There could even be a quest set up by some of the families and the NCR that results in a lot, if not all, of the factions losing power. -

Just something I would like to see: NCR trying to annex New Reno. I'm an NCR fan and it bugs me that they haven't been able to or even mention attempting to annex New Reno. After New Vegas is annexed I could see the state legalizing gambling, which would aid the NCR if they were to attempt to annex New Reno. -
Another thing is if Sloan has been cleared out and the railways are running (I'll expand on the railways/Sloan/NCRCF later) then the runway, roads, and control tower at NAFB could repaired (Although the tower would still be partially destroyed). Maybe when the player first goes there after the NCR take it over they will see some workers fixing the pavement. I'm looking forward too hearing your thoughts and opinions on everything.

Another possible mission for the NAFB interrogation quest could be that one of the later tribes that was assimilated into the Legion still maintains some of their tribe identity albeit in secrecy. Given the recent lose of a large number of high ranking officers, including Caesar and possibly Lanius, and a large percentage of the military would be a prefect time to rebel and reclaim their lost identity. Although the NCR doesn't know this intel until after the Legate is captured (keep in mind he can be killed). The way I imagine the quest playing out is if the player manages to capture the new legate he will then be interrogated by the player. After a certain point the new legate will inform the player his mission was to quell the rebellion, enslave the women and kill the men and children. The player can then choose to let the tribe form on their own, or talk to the CO at McCarran who then sends the player to talk with the leader of the tribe at the fort the player raided earlier in the mission (which the tribe later sets up as a town/city and their "capitol"), depending on how the talks go the tribe will either work out a peace deal and request aid or hate the NCR. If aid is requested then the NCR will send a squad of rangers (for protection and military training), a few OSI scientists(for teaching them self sufficiency), some supplies (at first food and medical supplies, but later weapons and ammo), and possibly some FoA tag along as well(depending on the followers ending). If the player chooses to not help them then the tribe becomes xenophobic and attack anyone that comes within their lands. If they receive aid then they become fairly powerful and self sufficient (they were former Legion and have some training by the NCR so they would be able to hold their own), and a close ally with the NCR, if the player chooses this then I think it it would be interesting to see a few faction members in and around the strip/freeside. I think if you were to do this quest, it should be stated that the fort that is raided is relatively close too the NCR boarder but still in Legion territory so that way the new faction wouldn't be completely cut off from the NCR if they were to become allies. Also when I mention "tribe" I'm imagining a fairly large group of people with Legion military training and some knowledge in self sufficiency but lacking a lot of technology and medical knowledge, and not something similar to the Sorrows or Dead Horses. The way they look could be inspired by some Legion (a small amount, but some), their former tribe culture (I'll leave that up to you), and possibly some NCR (depending on how the quest plays out). I could also see them being intolerant towards chems/alcohol, ghouls, and super mutants and nightkin.

It's a pet peeve of mine when people complain about something ridiculous and irrelevant to the topic, Smilies are a feature. deal with it. Was meant as a request with advice as too why they're a bit irritating, :)and:( :OI'm:D XDawareDX :Ssmillies>: ( >:)are:3 :Xa:P >:PfeatureD:, that doesn't mean they should be used at the end of almost every sentence lol  -
If you guys want it too be as lore friendly as possible then I would recommend leaving Russia, Eurasia, Europe etc. out since it's unknown how things are there. Stick only to north america and current known factions.
-
Last time I looked at a map Las Vegas is on the east coast of North America. If they were to invade New Vegas that means they would have had to take the east coast and a large majority of the land between. Also there's the east coast BoS that I could see fighting them. *Amended* The New Eurasian Union. that way they just have to cross the ocean. So they're either Russian or Chinese/japanese airships. How about we just go with the midwest brotherhood. We know that the east coast was sent to find them but failed too do so, so they do exist and traveled in airships.

http://www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/users/431125/?tb=mods&pUp=1 Millenia might have something you're looking for. P.S. try not too add some many smilies in your request. It's a pet peeve of mine, I know, but it makes it difficult to read and they're unnecessary. -

Correction: The NCRs standard rifle is the Service Rifle, hunting rifle, and cowboy repeater. Although they may seem obsolete to us, it actually makes sense to use these weapons. They're a very large army, possibly the largest known in the post apocalyptic world. It would be impossible for them to give power armour and gauss rifles to their soldiers, and they wouldn't really need it since the NCR army mostly faces raiders, tribes, legionary recruits. Also you may knock the NCR army but keep in mind which faction is ruling and which one is hiding in bunkers clinging to their beliefs hoping that it will save them.
