Steam and Bethesda remove paid modding from Skyrim Workshop

In response to post #24739089. Well, not entirely. My mod stack got a lot shorter, which has resulted in far fewer in-game issues, higher FPS, and better overall performance. -

Your sense of entitlement is 1000x more alarming than that of mod users who don't feel obligated to pay for mods. No matter how hard you work on a mod, no matter how many thousands of hours you put into it, no matter how strongly you feel about its monetization....... I don't owe you anything. And you don't owe me anything. That's the author/user relationship we have enjoyed until people like you got greedy. -

I'm gonna be perfectly honest here, I don't use Arthmoor's mods, and it has nothing to do with this scam. I just don't like the way he treats mod users asking for help. Even if it's a stupid question that's covered a thousand times in the description or FAQ, a mod author isn't entitled to insult and abuse the people who are doing him a favor by testing and playing with his mods. Now he's certainly not the only mod author like that. There are a lot of top-100 mods on here I won't use on principle because their authors are total jerks, and again, that has nothing to do with the past 5 days. Their propensity to belittle, condescend and arrogantly patronize mod users over the years is 1000x times worse than the chastisement mod authors have received in the past week. The point here is that abuse works both ways, and many high-profile mod authors have gotten away with it for far too long, standing on top of their pedestals of superiority. Well, hopefully one of the positives that comes out of this mess is that perhaps mod authors will have a little more appreciation for the mod users who made them famous, and recognize the fact that those same mod users can make them infamous just as easily. -

Don't exaggerate. Skyrim plays just fine without mods, and still has a huge following on consoles. Mods are great. But they're not mandatory. -

Without anyone to play your mods, you're just editing files for your own personal use. Of course I definitely understand it's a two-way relationship. All I'm saying is don't try to guilt users (and several other mod authors) for expressing displeasure with mod authors who rallied behind this scam, and don't expect us to just forgive and forget. I don't hate these people. I respect their talents and their creativity, and yes, I respect their time. But I'm not obligated to pay for it. And they're not obligated to create it. Things were working just fine before this scam. Except for the mod authors who got greedy and spent more time playing with the Creation Kit than with providing for their families, we had a symbiotic relationship. That relationship has been strained. Things won't ever be the same. -

SirTopas, what about the thousands of hours mod USERS have logged playtesting mods, providing quality control, reporting bugs and glitches, providing feedback and suggestions to mod authors? Hmmm???? Not having ever created a mod does not invalidate one's opinion or stance on the matter. Without mod users, there would be no mod authors. Don't you ever forget that. -

There was certainly some of it.....there always is. But the vast majority of butthurt mod authors and white knights are including irate mod users who posted "uninstalled and unendorsed, shame on you" along with any amount of criticism in that category. And THOSE comments grossly outnumbered any sort of threats, and were perfectly fair and justified. -

In response to post #24733934. #24734419 is also a reply to the same post. Indeed. Almost none of them would have been endorsed or popular as FREE mods, let alone paid mods. If I was a talented modder, and I was contacted by that company, and if I didn't have any principles, and was dumb enough to buy into that scam, you can bet your sweet bippy I would have brought my A-game with the most impressive mod I could create. Otherwise, what would have been the point? The general consensus was that of those 17 (19) mods, only one of them was worth any amount of money, because all the others were either 1). crappy mods, 2). still in very early development, 3). stripped down updates of mods we already have for free. -

Go look at SKYUI's comments section on here. It's been locked, but the dev's arrogant, condescending and smug demeanor is preserved. Yes, he was taking a beating from some VERY angry commenters, but he was also taunting them. That's unacceptable, and for that reason I will never upgrade or endorse SkyUI whether they upload it or not. -

"You can always go premium and help the Nexus out!" Or I can continue to click on ads in the top right corner, which generates far more revenue for the site. Valve, Bethesda and mod authors aren't the only ones in this not coming out smelling like roses....... -

I would say 99% of that "war machine" was being completely ignored by Valve and Bethesda, since the vast majority of that "war machine" was unhinged sociopathic sycophants who were pasting ASCII genitalia all over the internet in protest. Gopher saying "I want this to go away" on Youtube probably did more to change their mind than any of those petitions, subreddits, Steam Groups, or letters to individuals who will never see them. -

Refusing to pay for alterations to a product one has already purchased isn't greedy. It's common sense. No one forced mod authors to spend any amount of time on any mod. That's simply not how it works. If mod authors want to make money, they need to stop farting around with video game data files and go get a job. We'll miss their creativity, but we'll get by. -

I do, however, hope that in future they think twice about arrogantly condescending mod users looking for assistance with their mods in comments sections, like they have in the past. I'd stopped using some of their mods before this crap ever started because of that. -

LEGALLY they can tell him he can't put them on here. I'm not at all sure they'd be bold enough to try that though. On the other hand, would he be bold enough to update them here?
