[FO4]Which .ini file is vortex really using?

Hi guys, I'm really confused that which .ini file vortex is really using?

For example, for the file Fallout4.ini:

I've seen multiple .ini files with the same name at the locations below:

  • one in Documents\My Games\Fallout4.
  • one in AppData\Roaming\Vortex\fallout4.
  • one in AppData\Roaming\Vortex\fallout4\profiles\Q923HLSMC.

And yes, I've turned the "has its own setting" on in the profile setting.

Some mods require me to edit the .ini file, but with all these same files in these locations, which one should I modify?

Thank you!

Vortex uses all of them in order to make changes and preserve profiles without causing problems. If you need to make edits, do it in the one in your documents folder. Vortex will detect the change you make and copy it where needed.

Thank you for the reply. But if vortex copies my changes in the .ini file in document folder to where they are needed, what are the two in "AppData\Roaming\Vortex\fallout4" and "AppData\Roaming\Vortex\fallout4\profiles\Q923HLSMC" used for? In another word, in what situation will I need to modify the .ini files in these two location?

You won't. If you have multiple profiles in Vortex, then you will need to make the change to the ini file in your documents folder while each profile is active. Vortex stores that info and writes it back to the main ini file every time you change profiles. This way you can have different ini settings in different profiles, but the game is always looking at the same file.
