Help understanding how Vortex handles texture files?

I apologize, but I was unable to find the info on my own. Though, I am sure it is likely easy to find. When does Vortex write texture files to the game directory? Does it do it every time you deploy a new mod, when you launch the game?

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

When you deploy.

But it doesn't write texture files to the game directory, it creates links to the texture files in the staging directory. If there are multiple conflicting versions of a file, it only creates a link to the last one (as dictated by the rules you set during mod installation).

It's possible that adding a new mod only causes it to parse the data and create links as needed rather than replacing them all. I doubt that difference would be significant though.

Thanks so much. So, if I wanted to make a personal edit to a modded texture, I would find the winning load order mod and modify texture in its Stage folder?

Yes, then Vortex should detect the change and ask if you want to keep it or replace it with the original from the downloaded file.

If you reinstall the mod, though, it will replace your edit with the original, so it might be worth making your edit into a new mod that will always overwrite the original.

Perfect. Thanks so much for your help. I really appreciate it!
