Clean AE Master files?

NO! Don't do it!

The Unofficial Patch team, The Steam Workshop, other mod creators, and I, all recommend that you NOT clean the SSE Masters. Cleaning the masters can cause more problems than the process supposedly fixes. The least of which is whole sections of Apocrypha disappearing.

If you are cleaning Masters because LOOT says to, remember, LOOT messages are based on what LOOT is told to say, and not on any reality.

What's the current consensus on cleaning AE ESMs?

Discussion from this thread, relevant part excerpted below:

Given the nature of large reference bugs, this is an extremely valid reason to clean all the Bethesda masters, regardless of the previous discussion. Large Reference bugs are well documented as causing flickering as well as other graphical issues, and without cleaning them, or patching them (a lot of needless work), these glitches will prevail. This is especially more important with the new AE Creation Club content. I am therefore recommending we continue to advise and instruct users of our guides to clean these.

Can you Quote Anyone you mentioned (except yourself) that recommend Not to clean?

because, on every Modding guide, they insist to clean your Master files.

Recently, a lot of people (especially on reddit) said NOT to clean master files. It's hard to say if this was the majority position, since there's no poll or other valid data (at least I don't know of any).

Examples for the "don't clean" position:

https://www.reddit.com/r/skyrimmods/comments/lgk6k4/whats_the_current_consensus_on_cleaning_master/

https://www.reddit.com/r/skyrimmods/comments/gu5khw/is_cleaning_the_master_files_a_really_good_idea/

Decide for yourself, how valid you find the arguments there...

For some time, also the STEP project recommended not to clean the master files in SE/AE. Meanwhile they revised their position. Current recommendation is to clean - again:

https://stepmodifications.org/wiki/SkyrimSE:2.0.0

Nolvus, whose modlist and guide seem to be quite popular these days, also recommends cleaning.

https://www.nolvus.net/guide/ultra/cleaning

So, there seem to be valid arguments for cleaning. IMHO, especially the STEP guide and the STEP forums are among the most knowledgeable and trustworthy resources for Skyrim.

That being said, I stopped cleaning master files about 2 years ago. Anecdotal evidence (not proof of anything): My game runs perfectly fine - just as it did with cleaned masters... So maybe it's not that important at all, if you clean or not...

It contains the admonition not to clean masters from Arthmoor, the lead on the Unofficial Patch Team, and smr1957, from Steam Workshop.

If, as you claim in another thread, you have 45 years experience in the software development industry, you should be acutely aware that appeals to authority are seldom a valid method of resolving issues of a technical nature nor for giving advice re same.

I think you need to get up-to-date before contributing further here - given your most recent post you seem to have totally ignored both the information at the link I posted and showler's post above. In other words: RTFM.

Also, Arthmoor's recommendation to not clean the masters was (AFAIK) always given on the assumption one is using the unofficial patch - a fairly important caveat.

In short: There is no "consensus".

There are problems inherent in an uncleaned file that may or may not affect you.

Cleaning can cause problems, but those problems are fixed as they are found.

Potentially unfound problems from cleaning or potential problems from not cleaning. Pick your poison.
