step 9 i rename the file to xcom EU
i go to start xcom and it says "failed to start game (missing executable)." and im really sad

What happens if you don't rename anything and try to start the game at this point?

I get this spider sense feeling that you are somehow renaming the wrong folder...

Edit: Renaming the wrong folder would be a good thing since I have otherwise no idea at all what may be wrong. You have the exact same dlc's as I do.

The only other thing I can think of would be to disable any anti-virus program you may have running.

It is possible that such a program could silently put the exe. in quarantine after it was modified. (it would be a completely retarded way of protecting your computer, to first allow the change and then after the fact determine it to be a risk, but still not outside the realm of possibilities).

I plan to make some improvements to the installation script by making it actually downgrade a single file and to verify that the result is indeed as expected, since based on feedback, the current method of detecting UAC and anti-virus involvment is not effective.

  • 4 weeks later...

Is there a way to change the game code to stop the auto unequip option after battles? I'm very annoyed when my soldiers change their plasmas to assault rifles and ditch their SCOPES :/ I know there is such an option but I can't google it :/ Ideas?

That's a Long War question, not a downgrade to patch 4 question, but the answer is you really don't want that. Because you rarely take soldiers on two missions in a row, it's actually less of a hassle to re-equip every time; otherwise you'd be hunting in your list of tired soldiers to unequip that spare SCOPE and then re-equip it with your main soldier. We're hoping to have equipment templates in future versions, but for now, you've got to re-equip each time.

On the Long War "modding Long War" subforum, I think I posted some hex changes to turn off that option, but it would really lead to more frustrations.

Thanks for the answer,Johnny. My soldiers are similarly equiped in most cases: everybody who's able has a Plasma rifle and other have Plasma Carabines. Snipers have normal rifles and alloy bullets. Infantry has extra plasma pistols. Everyone has an alien grenade and a SCOPE. Engineers and sometimes scouts get arc throwers. As you can imagine it's more frustrating for me to equip my guys over and over before missions. None of my soldiers has killed or wounded so armors ain't a problem either. It's that damn auto unequip that's frustrating me :(

I think I have successfully downgraded.

Now I want to install The Long war.

Do I use the renamed file?

Once you have completed ALL of the downgrade process, ensure you can start up and play EU 'as is' (be sure to stay in 'offline' mode with 'autoupdate' and 'phone home' disabled first or it will get 'verified' back to patch 6 and you will have to start over). If so, then you are playing 'vanilla' EU as of patch 4. Simply install Long War according to instructions.
