Fallout 3 crashes when i try to save

Basically you should be able to run all that stuff. Play Fallout 3 offline if you have a slow 56 Kb modem as the disc and DLCs call homo to Mothersoft allot even if you don't have patch 1.5. I was getting ready to do a clean install last week. I put the disc in the DVD player and got carried away doing some posting. 6 hours later I was alerted by the Internet suite security that it had made 231 calls via VCerti.xx.

I'd advise you get your Video Card/s latest drivers and your disk drives latest drivers too, if you haven't already. I have nVidia 8600/s and it did help. I also updated my DVD disc drives drivers so I could be clear I had. I have Vista Ultimate 64 bit installed on a Gigabyte Mother board on which Vista Ultimate can support 8 GB of RAM.

Increase the amount of Random Access Memory (RAM) to at least 2 GBs, 3 GB is best, if you don't have that much already.

I am curious to see if the other posts I have read are true. Since I have switched off all GFW LIVE links for the moment so I can build my own test mod I don't have any problems occurring using only the Standard setup for Fallout 3 play.

I have read that old mods appear to be having a conflict because of a switch in the settings called, "Persistent". Old mods created before Patch 1.5.

I see you have a bunch of companion esps in your mod list. Unless their author is the same person and gave each very clear script definitions companions with the similar scripts can have conflicts that could cause your machine to use up a good portion of Random Access Memory.

Wandik just posted infomation recently that may be of help too. Click here for Wandiks post.

I am working with a PC with Vista Ultimate installed in the 64 bit setup which has an addition to it called, "Program Files (x86)" for 32 bit games. I use a keyboard and mouse.

If what you find here helps and you would like to add it to your library of helpful hints give me credit by placing my username with the information. Thx . Hope this helps a few of you.

I just finished reintalling the Fallout 3 and setting up LIVE as the operator for the game. Patch 1.5 was installed too by the LIVE link. The game crashed after I tried to enter Megaton, in the second run it crashed again when I was approaching Megaton, and again when I tried to do a manual save overwriting the old save.

First; I reduced my monitor screen resolution to the next lowest width and hieght.

I was able to save the game, approach Megaton, but was not able to enter Megaton.

I found that the Fallout 3 LIVEs Save folder has a FalloutPrefs.ini in the LIVEs Save folder. I compared it to the old one I saved outside My Saves folder. The one that is loaded when we install and run Fallout 3 without signing on to LIVE, at all. It has the similar switches, but many more in the way of function switches including the two more I think may be crashing our games.

Having the standard load in Saved Game you will see that the Fallout3Pref.ini is outside the Saves folder. While the one included with the LIVE Saves is inside thei Saves folder. If you have them both they may be conflcting by a doubled attempt from both being read by the computer.

Since I am playing the game on a PC I noted a strange key which enabled the controller for XBOX360.

bDisable360Controller=0 and disabled it by changing the 0 to 1. I noted that the settings also has a bSaveOnInteriorExteriorSwitch=1 which I never saw before in the Save Game function in the game Settings. bSaveOnTravel-1 was just below it and I turned it off too. I switched them both off by changing them to 0.

I loaded the game after signing on to LIVE. I hit the tab key after the level up closed and the message to "follow in his footsteps" ended. I sent my character off in a run, stopped him after a good distance, and tried to save the game again away from the Scenic Lookout for the test.

I was able to save the game clicking on, "New Save". I also tried over writing an old save shortly after and it worked too. Finally, I ran my character all the way to Megaton to cause the Video card to use all its potential RAM and force the MoBo RAM to help. Walked up to Megaton as the slidding baracade withdrew and no crashing, entered through the Megaton door with no crashing, and exited after Lucas gave me the welcome speech with no crashing.

This is only the fifth test, but I am hopeful that switching off the 360controller so it became disabled was part of the solution too.

I turned off all the langauge subtitle switches too. I don't need to see what the NPCs are saying when I can hear them fine and it will save RAM too.

I recently upgraded my memory on my pc and reinstalled fallout. I started having this same problem. I tried the things in this thread and none of them worked. Then I went to gamefaq's and read this solution posted there:

"disable any mods

run game at last save spot

SAVE game

RESTART LAUNCHER, reenable mods, and continue.

this should fix the crashing error

This is a fallout 3-error due to loading in new cells, and mods need to be frequently re-initialized in this fashion"

I did as suggested and it worked just fine. Now I have saved the game naked and with my cool weapons gone, but it worked. Now I re enabled all the mods and have to get my stuff back. Other than that, the problem is fixed.

they will have to get a new patch out soon because of vista sp2..............

hm, after reading SP2 changes info, i don't see any major update connecting to running software (including games) on vista... do you have any other info? (i'd like to know, cause i'll be probably moving my gaming rig from xp to vista sp2, after releasing my language version for 64-bit...)

thx :)

If the Problem is related to the Vista Service Pack 2, then it is absolutely not on Bethasda to Patch the Midrosofts OS. But there will be a Patch 1.6 for sure, as long the upcoming DLCs provide Achievements.

But maybe the Vista SP2 Problem could easily solved by a Game Patch  I'm running XP, no problem there :)

is there an easy way to make the mods compatble with 1.5 to prevent these crashes

Yep, you can run FO3Edit in Masterupdate Mode.

Download here

This can be done in to ways, one way is:

  • Rename the EXE from FO3Edit.exe into FO3MasterUpdate.exe
  • run FO3MasterUpdate.exe by doubleclick
  • after the Program did it's job, close it and ...

The other way is to add a parameter e.g. to a desktop shortcut

(mentioned in the description)
