KzinistZerg
Who needs to use spellcheck? If you know english well, you don't need the computer to do it for you. It's just a sign of laziness if you can't bother taking the extra time to make your posts readable. ^^Peregrine wrote that in a different post, in a different thread. Specifically the last page of the moderating suggestions thread. It caught my attention, and, as far as I can determine, this is the place for this to go (it is site feedback). This is partially a suggestion and partially a little hint. First of all, it's easier for everyone around you if you type correctly and try to use the best spelling/grammar you can. There are two suggestions for members. First is to use the Microsoft word or its equivalent for longer posts to correct errors, and second, to simply read over your shorter posts. Now, for the website suggestion part. On one of the other forums I am a member of, I have seen a "spell-check" function for both fast-reply and "new reply". It did help people easily improve their posts. Were you to put a function like that on here, it would be very helpful to those who currently sue their own methods. The website I was speaking of is bzpower.com, which is a discussion site for a Lego product. If you were to go into any topic at all and click on the "fast reply" button, you would be able to see the spell-check feature, regardless of your member status. Having such a feature would be helpful here. Thank you.
ThetaOrionis01
One of the other forums I am on has a spellcheck facility... It's a bloody useless nuisance, and, I am told, a nightmare to uninstall. Spellcheckers can correct the odd typo, but they aren't foolproof, and should not be relied upon. For instance, no spellchecker would have picked up the typo in your post. Most people here don't have a problem with the odd typo anyway - what is, however, sometimes objected to is the use of 1337sp34k or txtspk, or stream-of-consciousness posting without any punctuation whatsoever. I don't think there's a spellchecker out there yet who can correct those....
Peregrine
second, to simply read over your shorter posts. You had it absolutely right with that sentence. Except replace "shorter posts" with "all posts". If you care enough to post it and think people should read it, you should care enough to make it at least decently readable. And like Theta Orionis said, the problem I was objecting to wasn't the occasional typo. It's the posts that look like they were written by a drunk 5 year old with english as a 10th language. There's just no excuse for that.
loveme4whoiam
I've thought a couple of times about commenting on the lack of spellchecker feature, but in the end I think its only the occassional word or slip that is noticed, and no-one here really minds. I read over my posts in the preview panel (especially if I have used any tags in my post, something alot of people on these forums could do well to do) and if I catch something, I change it, and I guess that's what most people do. I tend to be a stickler for good spelling myself and completely see your point KzinistZerg, but if there is so much hassle involved with it as Theta says, it would probably be more of an hinderance than a help. Perhaps if it could be programmed to not allow any posts which contain 1337 speak and then kick the writer from the forum, maybe... *checks his post for any spelling mistakes
Dark0ne
I simply think; if you can't be arsed to spell properly and/or read through your posts, you can't be arsed to use a spell-checker.
Malchik
[i was objecting to posts that look like they were written by a drunk 5 year old with english as a 10th language. There's just no excuse for that.<{POST_SNAPBACK}> Unless perhaps they were written by a drunken five-year-old with English as a tenth language? As one who tries to write and who has done proof-reading for friends, it is amazing at the errors you can read over and over again and not see. But I agree with Peregrine and the others such odd typos (your 'phyical manefestation' for instance KzinistZerg) don't make the post unreadable. Nor does the fact that hardly anyone here seems to know the difference between your and you're, there, their and they're etc. And please don't suggest a grammar check! Besides, sometimes the typos can be quite funny. I'm okay with the status quo.
Dark0ne
We could always hire on someone to check every new post for typo's and grammatical errors .. I vote Theta, I think she's retired :laugh2:
ThetaOrionis01
Oooh.. I get to slap everyone for typos and grammatical faux pas? :cheesy: *slaps Dark0ne* http://www.clicksmilies.com/s0105/sauer/angry-smiley-046.gif It's 'take on' or 'hire' - not 'hire on' http://www.clicksmilies.com/s0105/lachen/laughing-smiley-004.gif
