Obviously we'd have to develop an entirely new language that everyone could understand!

I'm quite happy with English. We can just ignore other languages. All cultures and languages will blend into one sooner or later.

Not a single country perhaps.... but a federation of countries?

The main factor against this, IMO, is insane EU bureaucracy... if that could be trimmed down to sane levels (ie we put most of the bureaucrats against the wall right now, starting with whoever decreed that cucumbers must be straight and tomatoes had to conform to EU size & shape regulations... <_<) there's a chance countries will cooperate on the important points.

Even if there was a 'USE', as Morgoth calls if, what would the people of Europe do about it? Something like this?

It'd be like the miners strike of '81 (I wasn't even alive when that happened, but I've seen many video's/pictures), potentially a lot worse, and spread throughout most of Europe.

Would the US risk scenes like this? No.

I'm completely ignoring the political side of this argument, but whatever... :laugh2:

I'm getting the impression that you missed my point.

I am not predicting that the United States of Europe would function properly, and I claimed that in no place. I am well aware of the problems of language, taxation, public welfare, you name it.

However, you have to respect the conventions of international law. The main parts of the European constitution are the human and civil rights (I think those should be known to some extent in all countries of the EU) and the existing institutions of the EU defined within a single document (with some reforms which would have to take place one way or the other). There are some disputable points contained in that document, but nothing that is such a great problem that it couldn't be overcome.

Additionally, not all governments possess the brains to let the people vote over the constitution, but want to keep the matter in the parliament (yes, this is criticism of my government), thus a certain scepsis concerning the EU doesn't even play a role in some countries - and since membership in the EU isn't irreversible... I suppose under certain conditions the supporters of the constitution would find some way to establsih consent over the constitution.

Therefore, if the European Constitution is ratified (which isn't a set fact, but quite probable), this inevitably, by the conventions of international law, implies the foundation of a new state (call it Europe, call it the United States of Europe, it doesn't matter). There will still be the - more or less - same federal structure (Who said that a state must be governed by a centralised power?), and we will still face the same problems (only that they will be more pressing since we will be a federal state, not a confederation anymore), but there will be a European state in place of what is the European Union at the moment.

We may have certain communal laws etc but calling a place 'united' or 'union' does not make it so. Who can tell what the future may bring? If the threats to the human society become global the solutions will have to be as well. Who knows what kinds of political changes that will bring. However at the moment I think it is unlikely that the EU will present itself as one nation in the foreseeable future.

We are supposed to debate on the posibilty od a USE not the return of the U.S.S.R. which will never happen because nobody will accept comunism now that they have tasted freedom, or how much people hate the french. So please refrain from spamming.
