I believe that some type of Federation will form from the EU but, as stated previously, there are way too many hurdles to overcome so it is unlikely to happen in the near future.

 

First off, what would happen to the royalty in those countries who were to join? Would they keep them or would they have to loose them? How would a leader for the Federation or "USE" be chosen? How many different political parties would be allowed? Italy, IIRC, has an enormous problem with politics. My English 50 Prof was there a while ago and stated that within one year Italy went through three types of Government.

 

Many things would have to be streamlined to make something like a "USE" work and function properly. Not saying that the USA's version is the pinacle of functionality, but then we don't have to deal with a language barrier, long history of warfare between our neighbors, and many other differences that I cannot think of because I don't live in Europe. In anycase, I believe that you cannot have more than two superpowers existing at one time. China is closer to this than the EU. I have a theory (crackpot, but hoping it makes sense) that if another superpower in Europe were to emerge, global stability would weaken substantially. The UN would become inefficent (moreso than it already is), and territorial wars would erupt as the three superpowers attempt to influence small countries for a strategic advantage. Something like neo-imperialism meets Vietnam type wars, but on a widespread global scale.

 

But as far as a USE? Not in my lifetime.

I think that it will eventually happen. Of course, eventually might be 'not in our lifetime...' On that same note, I also think that it will become the United States of Earth. Now that definitely won't happen in our lifetime, or in our children's lifetime, but it will happen. It will also happen very quickly if we discover aliens( :) ), because at this stage in humanity, we have to have an enemy. So until we get over aggressiveness, we won't unite. The same with Europe. Until you guys get over your differences, you won't unite. But, it will happen. Eventually.

 

As for communism: It doesn't work, and never will. It does sound good on paper, but it just doesn't work. Chaosmaker is right. No country will revert to communism anymore.

That seems to be the same exact answer word for word everytime I hear somthing asked about comunism. Not to say I don't agree, but I would like to see a new angle eventualy.

I would just like to point out that not everyone has changed. Here in Sweden I still haven't seen any euro coins around.

The UK are still using pounds as well. No Euros, and the likelihood of the population accepting the Euro is quite low methinks. Good thing too IMO. :P

Why do loads of Americans hate communism? Has communism ever directly harmed or hurt you in any way? No. America just disagrees with it, so it uses the media (FOX) to brainwash people into hating communism.

 

Back on topic. A United States of Europe will NEVER EVER happen. Here's why:

 

Many Europeans will surely resort to riot and civil disobedience to deter the US from aserting its control. (If a USE ever happens, I WILL violently protest)
