I'd offer to do this myself but knowing me I'd end up making things way too elaborate, forcing the player to solve a set of random puzzles and go miles out of their way just to escape prison...

Well, personally aside from expanding the overall size of the prisons (ESPECIALLY the Imperial Prison!) I don't really know how to go about it. Like you guys already mentioned, it's just an exercise of pick lock and walk out door.

in that case make them expansive underground installments. maybe a couple of wrong turns in the imperial dungeon can get you lost, more guards to hold onto those in the cells, and more inmates. make them similar to the natural caverns and the like that are in the rest of the world - after all, why not use the dungeons that are already there, and just improve them into a place for holding criminals? maybe there could be a chance you're thrown in with another convict and he helps you escape once you get the door open?

More guards would be a good idea, But make them have routines/patrols, you'll have to spend a while in prison watching their patrols and routines to plan your escape. Also Those confiscated goods chest retrievings could be alot more fun if some of it was seperated like maybe your more dangerous items could be placed somewhere else, further from your rubbish nobles clothes, highly guarded, Also maybe you find the clothes first which means as long as your not hanging around the cells then they dont recognise you as a prisoner, then you've got to find a way of getting to your armor and weapons. Also SPOILER SPOILER if THieves Guild not completed look away then if you have the gray cowl of nocturnal you could be taken to be hanged where you have to find a way out of having a day trip to the gallows. Also i secret passage out of every prison would be nice but do something like glenvar castle where you cant see the little open door fists, that way it'll be really hard to find the secret passages.

What about a dialogue with a guard , to annoy/make him angry , and he'll open the door to kill you ? (designed for h2h skilled characters)

or what about charming (available only if the guard is opposite sex) ?

Thief - steal the key from the guard when he's passing by the door

Assassin - Kill the guard (if it's only one) , then steal the key form him

as an addition for thief and assassin : if you equip the armor of the guard , drag him in cell , close the door , and then left the prison , your bounty will be set to 0.

You could go even further to have executions. Like if the player has enough bounty, they become scheduled for execution. You'd probably have to have a guard system where if enough guard attack you, or maybe "kill" you, you are auto matically arrested for execution instead of dieing. Then you have the chance to escape the larger prison (and maybe have 5 lockpicks instead of one). And have a system in place where you bounty goes down after a few days.

 

Execution would add more to game while adding to the lore i think. Because killed 20+ guards and paying a fine is just so silly. They should try to execute you so you dont murder anyone else.

 

You can go further with the executions and have a chance to make a run for it on your way to the execution.

For this Bigger prisons with lots of Hallways and More inmates and guards and Possibly a random event That a prisoner is starting a riot ( a chance to escape since the guards are busy) or A fellow inmate tryong to escape and he opens your cell door for you. just some ideas =P

Another idea would be to have something like Escape from Alcatraz, or Shawshank Redemption, where you would have to use smaller tunnels, say drainage or sewer tunnels, and you would have to escape inbetween patrols.

 

When they notice you are gone the local guard would be searching for you, so you would have to lay low fora few days, until they stop searching.

 

I also like the idea that you could be executed with enough infamy/bounty, but I also think that with enough fame you might be released by a sympathetic guard, who would see you as a hero.
