Vortex not running, .Net Desktop Runtime 6 not working correctly / fix not working.

Hi all,

I would greatly appreciate it if someone could help with this issue,  I had been using Vortex without issue for almost a year, then this cropped up recently (I'm relatively new to PC's, I built my PC  a little over a year ago...).

I have been experiencing some issues with Vortex, please see error message below;

Displaying

Unfortunately, the fix had no effect. I contacted Microsoft support who carried out the following works as outlined below, but... this did not fix the issue either.

Check the File:

Navigate to C:\Program Files\dotnet\shared\Microsoft.WindowsDesktop.App\6.0.32\.
Open the Microsoft.WindowsDesktop.App.runtimeconfig.json

Reinstall .NET Runtime:

Scan device

Event Viewer Logs:
Open Event Viewer (type  Event Viewer in the Windows search bar).

Navigate to  Windows Logs > Application and look for any errors related to .NET or Vortex.

At this point Microsoft support suggested that I contact Nexus support for further assistance, which I did and Nexus support suggested that I post the issue / steps taken on this forum.

I'm hoping someone can help me out on this one.

Thanks in advance,

Gojira2277

Have you seen this post in the pinned thread? It should solve your problem.

Hey Pickysaurus,

Thank you for the reply and suggestion, much appreciated.

I followed the steps, installed version 8, and did a restart,  but unfortunately no joy...

According to the error message from Vortex, it only works with version 6, but not later versions...

And to make matters worse support from Microsoft for version 6 is ending in November (IIRC on the 22nd).

It was worth a try, but unfortunately it didn't work.

Thanks again for taking the time 😉

.NET6 and .NET8 are not the same thing. You explicitly need .NET6

The exact download link is on the help page mentioned before https://github.com/Nexus-Mods/Vortex/wiki/MODDINGWIKI-Users-Troubleshooting-NET-6-Install-Issues

Hi Picksaurus,

Sorry I'm only replying now, but work got in the way...

Thank you for the clarification, I followed the link you kindly provided.  Installation got as far as this;

image.png.529ca3ade4e681e6f16cccb89c76d9b2.png

My dotnet folder is located in Local Disk (C:) > Program Files > dotnet

The contents of the dotnet folder are below;

image.thumb.png.896d714b1af05460bd52eb42fcc5f29a.png

However I can't find 'dotnet-host-6.0.28-win-x-64.msi' as requested in the above dialog box

And when I search for it on my PC, no results.

My Games are stored on my D drive along with the following;

image.thumb.png.bcaad79e0021862b1a862f96a5642a17.png

Could  the dotnet folder being on the C drive and my games & Steam / Vortex folder being on the D drive be the cause of the issue?

Update: I also followed the steps below, then tried to download .Net again but still no joy...

I'm sorry for all the questions, but this is all new to me and I'm out of my depth...

Can you please assist further?

Kind regards,

Gojira2277

Hi,

I've been back on to Microsoft support, who checked over my system and concluded "Based on the scan, there where no integrity violation found, this means that the system is functioning properly and no corrupted system files".

They also communicated the following;

"Based on the previous conversation, and the error you encounter, there is a possibility that the 3rd party software that you want to run on your device is not compatible with your current system.

But no worries, since you have me now, allow me to properly isolate the issue.

Before we proceed, further just to set your expectations right, that when it comes to 3rd party software, we from the Microsoft support does not have the exact resources to properly diagnose or troubleshoot them, since this software are no longer a product of Microsoft".

Microsoft support say everything is as it should be with my Windows 11 installation.

They suggested uninstalling Vortex and then reintegrating it.

So, I uninstalled Vortex, but when I try to install it again, I am still experiencing issues.

The steps I took after uninstalling Vortex are as follows;

1) I go to Nexusmods.com, I click on 'Manual download', I then see this;

image.png.1deebe16aab32528985b314ccee4913a.png

I click on the .Net 6.0+ link, it downloads, I open the file and see the following, all as expected so far;

image.png.3539a14cee568af8e1dda4d18576ae6c.png

I click Install, and the installation gets this far;

image.png.88ab37751fe5fb4dfdcf82b1c49bbb4d.png

At which point the follow box appears;

image.png.38dee4e57e55968ea5276ec1e322b4bf.png

Microsoft are claiming that everything is fine with my Windows installation.  They claim/advise the following;

"The issue points to either a problematic installed software or an incompatible software.

That is why reinstalling the software can help you further isolate the issue.

If the issue persist, it is best to have the software developer further diagnose the issue".

I have tried to uninstall and reinstall Vortex but I'm only getting as far as the box above.

I feel at this point like I'm stuck between Microsoft and Nexus, both believing that the issue lies with the 'other side' / 'other software'.

I don't think Microsoft are going to do anything further for me.

I've really enjoyed Vortex over the past year or so, mods are the main reason I researched and built my own PC.  I got a taste for playing with Mods when Bethesda allowed mods on Skyrim / Fallout 4 on Xbox, albeit in a relatively small way due to the limitations of the console, but this lead me to the build my PC and become a part of the community.  I would really appreciate it you could assist me further.

Would it be possible to escalate this issue with Nexus, to try and resolve it, please?

When I initially reported the issue I was having to Nexus support they directed me to this forum, should I go back to them directly or do they have staff on this forum?

That "C:/programdata/package cache" folder it mentions is a hidden windows folder.  You'd need to turn on "hidden items" in Windows Explorer to be able to see it.

You might also need to install 6.0.28 in order to repair it so that the process can complete properly: https://dotnet.microsoft.com/en-us/download/dotnet/thank-you/runtime-6.0.28-windows-x64-installer

Hi Showler,

Thank you for your help, I turned on "hidden items" in Windows Explorer and then I was able to install .Net from the link you provided.

I then downloaded Vortex, installed it...

Unfortunately, when I tried to run Vortex, I got the same error message as before;

Thanks again to all who were able to assist, much appreciated!

You need to install the version I linked and then install the newer version on top of it.

From what I could find the error you were getting was because the newer version was missing files from the earlier version that it needed in order to remove and update the earlier version.  Therefore you need to "fix" the earlier version by reinstalling it and then install the newer version on top of the now "fixed" older version.

edit: Also Pickysaurus is a staff member at Black Tree Gaming, the developers of Vortex.  He provides most of the installation support on the forum, though he can bring it to the attention of the Vortex developers if he feels he needs to.
