Check Your Steam Account Settings

Heads up for everyone.  Check your Steam account settings.

I just purchased something from Steam and my saved payment info was gone, and I had to re-enter it.   BUT, more importantly, update information for games was changed.  Games set to only update on launch were still set for that, but also had the update info being overwritten by Steam, under the Downloads tab in Steam settings - which had updates changed to "Let Steam decide when to update" for games installed in Steam Library - and even though I had games set as exceptions, they still showed a pending download date - and I certainly DO NOT trust Steam to respect those exceptions.  I had to change the global setting for games in my library to "Only update at game launch."

I strongly suggest that everyone check their Steam settings and fix them as needed.

IMPORTANT NOTE

Upon checking the Manage Downloads page (accessed via the bottom of the Steam page), I observed that Steam had once again set a date to download updates for games, despite them being set to only update on launch and despite my changing the global parameters to only update on launch.  So this needs to be checked on your end - Do NOT rely upon Steam to correctly apply changes.

Just to re-emphasize, Ii you have pending downloads for games on your Steam "Manage Downloads" page, even if they were in the "Unscheduled" section, and  you do not want them updated, you WILL need to check after launching Steam, as Steam may have reset them to a scheduled time for download and moved them to the "Up Next" section IN SPITE OF YOU SETTING THEM NOT TO, except upon launch.

Good luck!

I've also found it keeps resetting the Steam cloud settings. I do not want my saves using the Cloud, but it keeps sneaking that in too.

Unfortunately, Steam is extremely unreliable and totally untrustworthy - people should absolutely make it a practice to routinely check and monitor their settings to ensure that Steam has not borked them in some manner due to some maintenance or client update.

Lock your acf file, for sure.  Bloody push updates are the bane of my existence.

I also routinely bak up my full FO4 directory to an external HDD.

Backing up my game folders is my ultimate failsafe.  Once had Steam update my Skyrim Special Edition (my fault, though) and it was real easy to fix - just copied the backed up files back into the main folders.  And voila!  It was if the update had never happened.

Of course, we shouldn't have to worry about this - which is why it is probably a far better idea to just get your games from GOG from now on, and not have to deal with the whole mess.

I wish I had done similar. Since Beth's glorious Skyrim SE update I cannot play the game any longer and had to revert to old Skyrim. Thankfully I'm not the greatest Skyrim fan, the graphics are too childish and outdated for me, despite all modding.

I saw the Steam setting changes recently, too. Luckily for Fallout 4, my favorite game, I had changed the update file to "read only" and also copied the game folder + important ModOrganizer2 folders to an external drive. So I could install the game in 1.10.163 version easily with all my modded mods (mostly Outfit Studio changes) to my new PC. And I usually play only with Steam in offline mode for a longer period now.

Thats useful info, thanks for the share

It's my pleasure to be able to do so!   Just one small way to give back to the gaming community in some small measure what I have gotten out of gaming.
