Mod Browsing Overhaul Discussion

Hey everyone, head of design at Nexus Mods here - thanks for all the feedback so far.

I wanted to provide some context for the recent search changes. The old search system made switching between content types (e.g., games and mods) difficult, and only the "Mods" category had a results preview. The new quick search improves this by making it easier to browse all content types while allowing you to preview more results.

We designed the new modal to be highly visual. During testing, we experimented with a more compact list view, but most users preferred larger thumbnails, as images are often the key factor when scanning for mods, collections, and especially images. If you're solely focused on mods, it’s easy to forget that users browse other types of content too.

Quality-of-Life Improvements

  • You can now activate search instantly with the `/` hotkey and dismiss it with `Esc` for quick access.
  • Keyboard navigation is coming soon, so you’ll be able to search and browse without a mouse (if that's your thing).
  • Search is now much better at handling inexact queries (e.g., “baldurs gate” without an apostrophe) and includes keyword matching (e.g., “fo3” will return Fallout 3).

The general feedback was very positive in testing and during the closed and open beta periods. It’s been interesting to hear from people saying it’s helped them discover more new mods than they previously would have. I understand that this is a big change visually from what you’re used to - there is some extra functionality to coming where the initial screen will show your recent searches and saved games. This will make the modal feel less empty when first opened.

Why the Colour Changes?

The updated colours are part of a broader design transition. We’re rolling out brand-new pages soon, and these changes help make the experience more seamless when switching between old and new designs.

For those who have been using the site for years, we know big updates can be jarring—I’ve had the same reaction to changes on sites I love! But these updates are necessary to modernise the site’s core architecture, allowing us to build and release new features more efficiently. We really appreciate all your feedback and are excited to keep improving Nexus Mods.

Hi, design person, artist and retired signwriter here. Constructive crit with some humour (I hope) coming up!

Although it's not exactly about the mod pages, it does relate to the home page with all the info graphics on. The little images are mostly absolutely fine but what sticks in my professional craw is the words that are split onto two lines:

     INTERVI

EW

No no no!

I was always told that splitting a word like this is bad form. Every time I see this, I cringe. It looks bad and unprofessional. Better to make the word smaller and fit it into one line, really. Maybe I'm old-fashioned (I am old after all!) but please, stop splitting title words into those two lines. Please don't see this as trolling, I really just hate it though.

Two words, two lines is fine. One word split onto two lines, bad.

AlienSlof 🙂

PS - loving being purple! It's my fave colour!

It's early yet, my eyes are still adjusting...
It takes a long time for them to adjust now at my age now, after I wake up.

Hey AlienSlof, long time no see.
Welcome back.
I remember you from Waaaaaay back in the OLD (And much better, than the new) Bethesda Forums.

I see that Premium Members names at the bottom of the Forum, and their status have changed to a Lila/Lavender color.

A bit more pleasant and relaxing.

Glad you like. Should be even more pleasant now as we've toned down the higher contrast white/greys down there too

I can see how, as a sign writer, that'd drive you mad (my grandad was a sign writer), so apologies for that! It's a stylistic choice to create bit of visual interest and energy on those thumbnails. I'll pass this feedback on to the team though.
Glad you're enjoying the purple.

I remember you too! Still around and getting older and more decrepit by the year! Not been on Beth's forums in a very long time - it wasn't the most welcoming of places as I recall.

Wanted to chime back in saying that while I'm certainly still able to use the site, the problems I've outlined in previous posts are still very much noticeable and are problems for me:

Collections being before new mods is a worse UX for the average user.  I get collections are a push to use Nexus a ton all at once, but I can't help but imagine most modders are like me where we either have our own load order already and a collection would mess that up, or we're looking for one thing in particular/just checking on new stuff in case it's worth adding.  By all means show collections, but do it below new mods.

The "show more mods" button is still failing to take into account the "more" word by reshowing the 16 mods on the landing page.  When the old site was able to show the equivalent of mod #17 as the first "more mods," the new site failing to do that feels like a loss of functionality and is actually frustrating to know page 1 is 80% useless (since only mods 17-20 will actually be new to see.)

Dead space - this is where people are pointing out feeling like mobile was prioritized over desktop.  My laptop doesn't notice the dead space much, my desktop it's massive and an eyesore.  People with even larger monitors than I have have a COMICAL amount of dead space.  Scalability depending on screen space feels like something a redesign would want to prioritize since more capacity to show mods would be celebrated (which is also why the show more mods button being broken feels so bad).

I appreciate that some actual discussion between users and staff is happening now, so trying to boost the visibility of these so that it's not lost in the "they're just complaining to complain" mindset that seems to have pervaded the last week.

Signwriters unite! Not many of us around any more thanks to self adhesive vinyls! I do think the words would look better - and more stylish - not split like that. I tend to read it in two separate lines and 'ew' is a word usually used to express disgust lol! There are much better eye-catching styles than doing that. I was often told 'use red somewhere' as red is the first colour the human eye registers - goes back to our tree-dwelling, red berry-eating days!

I like the cartoony pics though. 🙂
