I don't know if you've been watching the news lately, but the fallout between Australia and Indonesia would be hilarious if it wasn't so disgraceful. The previous government of Australia was revealed to have wiretapped the Indonesian president's phone, the current Prime Minister didn't apologise-and now everything's gone crazy. At present there's a huge riot going on in Indon right now, with a few thousand people demanding a declaration of war on Australia. A couple of Indon political parties have also announced that unless the Prime Minister apologies within the next four hours, they'll target and kill any Australian nationals they can find. If that's not enough at least four Australian tourists in Indonesia have been murdered over the incident by rioting locals while several Australian business webpages have been DDOSed or robbed. And they expect us to apologise.

I apologise for that post above-it was based on the information I had at the time, but through either lax journalism or willful idiocy that's largely wrong. Here's what I found out(aside from why you ALWAYS do your own research before forming an opinion!):

Yes, there is a serious issue between Australia and Indonesia, but it's purely diplomatic at this stage. The real problem in all of this is a group called the Red And White Brigade(Laskar Merah Putih) and a variety of other special-interests group-Lasker Merah seem to be responsible for the cyber attacks-they've said that if they can't go after the Australian government then they'll go after it's media and corporate interests. Pemuda Panca Marga are the ones who claim to be planning to attack Australian nationals in the country-they've blatantly said that if PM Abbot doesn't apologise within 24 hours they plan to attack the embassy and start killing Australians.

I can't really find much history about either group. Laskar Merah Putih is a heavily armed militia that formed sometime around the East Timor incident-they're a few hundred strong, government backed-your typical pseudo military enforcers, mostly used for keeping Papua under control. Pemuda I can't find as much about. They claim to be "representing" the children of Indonesian war veterans, but that sort of group usually has an ulterior motive. Given their comments in the wake of the diplomatic incident they seem to have an axe to grind over the East Timor incident.

So where does this leave us? Well I think this is a police matter rather than cause for military intervention. It's shown atleast two very, very ugly groups to exist in Indonesia-(hardly surprising-these sorts of groups exist everywhere)-which the police should probably deal with before they do something stupid-but other than that, despite the media bulls*** the situation is well under control. Do I still advocate a conflict with Indonesia? heck no, and I feel stupid for believing what I was told-I do think the police should have a very serious look at some of these "support" groups though. Charities rarely have AK47s and body armour...
