I would buy it, but it's just not my style of game. It seems very reminisce of Minecraft and I didn't enjoy that game much. Building and surviving... I dunno, I like strategy games where you can invade.

It's actually more of an RPG. Building isn't really the focus-the buildings you make are to give you access to various NPCs and services(A bit like a Skyrim Hearthfire house's upgrades) The majority of the game is spent exploring underground dungeons/caves/ruins fighting mobs and bosses, filling your friend's houses with Honey and general RPG gear and stat building. There's also an interesting progression mechanic, with Heart Crystals(analogous to levelling up) being an item you find through risk VS reward combat rather than at set intervals. The RPG element is pretty deep too, there's a surprisingly in-depth stat system, and you can make pretty much anything work. Having full endgame gear can take anywhere from fifteen to a hundred hours, depending on how smart you are and how quickly you can work out how the Terraria would works.

The world is surprisingly radiant, too. Killing a boss often has a tremendous effect on the world's mechanical processes. Killing the Wall Of Flesh for example is the only linear part of the game-without it you can't access the "second half" of the game. But when you do kill it, the specific world you kill it on will develop "corruption". Corruption works like a cancer-it spawns randomly in six locations when you kill the WOF and then spreads organically, infecting areas and making them much more dangerous. You can cleanse corruption, but even then that's purely optional, given that if you let it run it's course it brings major changes but doesn't actually make anything unplayable. Just more violent, darker-toned, and more sinister. Plus, the Corruption backgrounds are the prettiest... or maybe that's just the goth in me talking.

Terraria is hideously addictive once you're about five-ten hours in, have some decent gear and know how the world's "biomechanics" work. The stuff you can build is just incredible, and your character really does transform as they progress. You can be pretty much anything-grappling hooks, cloaking devices, jetpacks, grenade launchers-or fairey wings and a wand. It's one of those games that looks kinda rubbish on the outside, but then when you look to close, grabs you with a greasey tentacle and never, ever lets go.

Are there mods that improve the graphics? The little blocky sprites style of the game no longer appeals to me, sadly. That's one of the main reasons I won't get it.

Not at present. It's a great game-and the bargain of the century-but only if you can look past the retro graphics. And the Dark-Souls level difficulty.

Fair enough, Terraria definitely isn't for you then. There's tools in Terraria which can two-shot a level capped player who misuses them(damage to self ignores armour)-let alone the weapons and monsters!

EDIT: Of all the many places in the entire bloody solar system, this guy was in the wrong one. Seriously, I can't even begin to calculate the chances of being hit in the head by a meteorite. It'd have so many zeros!
