My system had a sudden shutdown, and it won\'t start.

I'm sorry to say, but Iliad86 may be right and probably is. It may be only the fuses yet I would not count with this, the fuses are to protect the 'house' and too slow to protect the device they are in, still it may happens the components resist time enough to the fuses blow up and most modern PSU have short circuit protections.

Edit: Saw now the issue is already solved, glad the things went well :)

...........................you've got to be kidding me right? Wow......wow...make him pay for a new PSU....wow people like that shouldn't be near a computer. Why in the heck did he put a switchblade in the USB port?!

Take a quick check inside your computer and see if there's anything blackened or blown (capacitors, etc.) If nothing on the motherboard is fried, you need a new PSU.

And if something IS fried on the motherboard, you probably need a new PSU too :D

*Edit* I fixed it by leaving for 10 minutes like you suggested, thanks.

Oh, and it was an Italian stilletto knife, my computer was stabbed >_<.

oh, excellent! You are very lucky ;) I really thought it was dead, especially with someone stabbing a freaking knife in it.

Still, I'd like to know why the heck he even did that in the first place.

@Illiad86 I haven't seen that Dr. Seuss poem in years great find.

What happened to your system is when the 5 volts powering the USB was shorted to ground, a special circuit in the power supply activated called a crowbar circuit. What it does is shut down the power supply as long as there is power applied. Even if the short circuit is removed.

Many modern computers have a keep alive 5 volts that is still on when you power down. This is used for things like enabling the computer to power up when you hit a key on the keyboard, wake on LAN and similar stuff. So the crowbar was still in place until the computer is completely powered down. Either unplugged or the power switch is off. It takes a minute or so for the voltage to drain down and the crowbar to turn off.

The first thing you should do when there is a short circuit, or any other kind of arcs and sparks, is pull the power cord out of the wall. This is to prevent a fire and even more damage.

If your power supply had not crowbared, it would have smoked. Be sure to test that USB port with some device you can live without before plugging in something important. And take that knife away, he is obviously too young (no matter what his age ) to be allowed to play with sharp pointy things. The next thing he could stick it in could be a power outlet. That would probably ruin a good knife. And might not do him much good either.

Robin's 5-point list for successful friend neutering:

  1. Take stiletto
  2. Apply to friend's temple
  3. Apply blunt force to the end of the stiletto not pressed against friend's temple
  4. ???
  5. Profit

Works every time!

Interesting stuff there BBen, never knew any of it!
