Darmoth
I'm kinda suprised no one brought this up already. The popular belief of members of both the right and left wings, that games cause violence in our nation... It is my belief, this is actually the other way around. A popular columnist for PC gamer wrote this month, about the fact that he recently became a witness to a triple murder. He spoke of how he wished he could simply dismiss this, having seen the same in Grand Theft Auto III. But he couldn't. The bodies, the blood, and the bullets were all real. The truth is there has always been violence in our nation, long before games. Before games became major entertainment buisness, people said it was the TV that caused violence, before that, movies, before that, comic books... It goes on and on... Truth is most games try to mimic the real world. Most of what's in games certainly wouldn't have even a thread of believablity, if we hadn't seen or heard or read worse, on CNN, in documentaries, in history books. The truth is the world we live in is much more vile and corrupt than anything we've seen in games. So one can hardly blame games causing violence in the world, when the world causes violence in games.
OddGuy
oh god... don't get me started on this AGAIN....... games are an OUTLET!!!!!!!!!! In my opinion, violent games such as GTAIII provide gamers with a way to take out there frustrations by sniping off the heads of a few cops. Don't get me wrong, by no means do I condone violence of any sort (to a point :D ), but thats my opinion.
Laser
Games are too violent for us and we should aviod them at all cost in order to salvage what little humanity is left in our love depraved children. *succumbs to urges and crowbars nearst person in the head* But really, I've been watching rated R movies scence I was about 6-7. I don't go around killing people either, I just have a morbid scence of humor. So I laugh when somone dies horrably in movies and in games, I don't kill prostitutes for cash, nor do I shoot people because their G-Virus carriers that havn't changed yet. I'm sick of mothers that spend too much time complaining society isn't paying attention to what we're putting on TV while they fial to acually watch their own children. NO, we're not satanic devil worshipers. NO, we're not all perverted rapists in wait. NO, we're not the cause of all school shootings. YES, you mothers are smothering you're children from the real world so much that when they move out they'll be offended from a boob shot on a PG-13 movie. "Oh no! A natral part of the human body! This movie must be boycotted!" Bah, I hate that crap. I knew a mother like that once, she left her famly and ran of with a man she met on the internet. And another one in town duck taped a deers butt to her van and threatend to kill my brother if anyone took it off. Now I'm not stupid enough to sterotype of just two of them, but all the ones I've seen on TV even seem a bit... "off".

Smite_Plight
I'm with you darmoth.the only reason that there is a link at all to violent games is because usually when someone is on the path to becomeing a violent person the start out with small time violence. and it doesn't come any smaller time than video games and movies. then they usually go out and torture some house flies and insects before going on to cats and dogs. Finally they can graduate and start to cause pain and suffering to fellow humans, at which point usually the government steps in and puts a stop to it. i think the problem with violence in video games is that it is always small time violence, like kicking a dog or running over the elderly. What we need is some big time violent games. like gengis khan first person shooters and maybe a sim-Hitler (need to exterminate so many gipsies to get a tank and so on). I think that by making games more violent and offensive that it will be like putting another hurdle in the obstacle course of violence.

I believe violence caused by games only happens in the US, and that it is very easy for a troubled teenager to get himself an arsenal, because of that fact and IMO the lack of attention given by the parents, America´s teenagers are a walking bomb. ThetaOrionis01
I think anyone who goes on a killing spree after playing games had problems to start with - and the killing spree is caused by those problems, not by the games. But there seems to be a trend in society to blame everyone and everything else -rather than accepting responsibility for our own actions we're looking for someone we can sue. And it's always easier to blame violence on a computer game - I mean, if we didn't have that scapegoat, we might have to look at our parenting, and - shock, horror - even the society we live in. And yeah, a lot of it has to do with parenting. A lot of parents are wrapping their kids in cotton wool and shield them from anything and everything. Then, when the kids are getting to an age where they're exposed to reality it comes as a complete shock. I'm not saying you should raise toddlers on a diet of horror movies - as with everything, you need to find a balance - but that you shouldn't shield your kids from reality altogether. Even young kids can understand a lot more than they are given credit for - as long as you take the time to talk to them, explain things and answer their questions. And I'd rather my kids watched Alien and Terminator and played Doom or Quake than have anything to do with Barney the Dinosaur.
Switch
lol yeah, i think this whole games cause violence thing is a load of rubbish. whether games getting MORE violent would be a good thing or not i dunno, they seem realistic enuf already :P personally i think GTA III is sick, but thats just me. i daresay for half mental people its a good block to stop them from becoming actual murderers (and just a good game for those with a "morbid" sense of humor :P) neways back to games causing violence. like theta says, if a game causes someone to go do something terrible, then they mustve had a mental quirk in the first place. and yes, theres too much of this dont take responsibility for ur actions, sue someone instead! stuff going on.
