Adamastor
the root of violent behabiour lies in many places. one of the largest would be the government. the us bigshots teach us that when we have a problem with someone we kill them... and then they complain about videogames... has anybody seen 'bowling for columbine(sp?)' , for those that havent i suggest you go see it. there is a segment in which they try to find out why such horrible things happen (in this case the columbine highschool massacer). is it videogames? the whole world has videogames and hardly any other country has highschool shootings, is it movies? again the whole world has these movies, is it the bloody history of the country? compare 1 civil war with untold centuries of colonisation, slavery, and mass murder... then what? the conclusion they reach in the movie/documentry is the government. it keeps everyone afraid. 'killerbees are coming to get us', 'there is going to be a nuclear war with the russians', 'muslims are going to kill us with chemical/biological weapons', etc... fear. and in the words of the all knowing master yoda: 'fear creates anger, anger creates hate, and hate creates suffering' or in this case insane teenagers altho i rule out videogames as the source for all the violance, i do believe that a deranged enough person might get inspiration from them. ThetaOrionis01
I think the main cause of the problem is the availability of guns - it's hard to go on a killing rampage with a very large trout or a sharpened kiwi fruit.... I haven't looked up any statistics, but I wouldn't be surprised to find a correlation between gun ownership and murder rate. You'd have to be very unlucky to get killed by a game cd, IMO.... To quote the sarcastic comment of Lazlow off the Chatterbox radio channel in GTA3, 'if more people had guns, we'd have less shootings'.

Pob
I belive someone (and I forget who, the psych grads may know) said that "Parents are the primary agent of social change" Education is the second and The Media the third, but there may be a strong case for them now being the other way round. Our primary personalities and values are put in place before we go to school, mainly before the age of about 2 and thyen again from 2 to about 4. Therefore what we expose our youth to and how we treat them in their 1st four years of life will have a profoiund effect on how they live the rest of their life. These people going on shooting sprees may well have had poor parenting (interested what the corelation is) in which boundries are not set. Any parent who fails to set boundries will produce children who have no concept of boundries and for whom social boundries don't exist or apply. These boundries must be fairly enforced as well to ensure they understand that the boundaries apply to everyone. There may of course also be other factors influnecing things; the ready avaibilty of guns, hormones (in teenagers anyway). they could also have been drunk/high or coming down of drugs and that may have influenced their choices. To put it all down to the video game is a bit, well sensational. While it may have influenced there choice of activity it isn't the cause. <gets off soapbox>
Beaten by an Ugly Stick
mmmm...how much violence does human nature account for? Can a child really be at fault, Can their parents be accused? Why DO donuts taste so good? These are questions we don't really have to ask ourselves, but we can! so why answer them? 10 pts if you can understand what Im trying to say... ................ :o :P   <_<   oh yes, video games are but one of many factors that could cause violence, so why single out the enjoyable things. A lot of people who do kill people are depressed or misunderstood- while games promote fuzzy happy feelings- even as your blowing off a digiital head- and people who like the same game have somewhat of an understanding with each other. I wish i was president.... :(
