AlduinWorldEater Posted January 17, 2015 Posted January 17, 2015 First off, I'm not sure this is in the right forum, but as it's possibly related to a mod from the Skyrim Nexus, I figure this is a good place to start off. I literally just lost my gaming rig (less than an hour ago) to a virus. I don't have a way of knowing for certain, but the only site I've downloaded anything from lately has been the Nexus. It happened very, VERY quickly...the computer came to a "full system halt", whatever that means, and began doing the "beep beep" bit when trying to boot. I reached in and yanked a RAM card, hoping that was the issue. The computer proceeded to boot up normally, but wouldn't open anything except my browser - and would only pull up Facebook, no other sites would load. I attempted to pull up my antivirus program multiple times to no avail. It would appear as a background process, but the task manager couldn't shut it down. I attempted a full reboot only to be greeted by the boot menu. I attempted a diagnostic from in there and was given an error 0123 (IIRC. I was so annoyed I didn't really take note). I tried closing the boot menu and it threw up a Keyboard Error (keyboard's fine, computer thought it wasn't plugged in) before restarting with a black screen that simply said "The file is corrupt". Again, I can't be sure that it came from the Nexus, but as previously stated, that's the only place I've downloaded anything from lately. I know there was an infected file issue not too terribly long ago, so there may be a chance something managed to slip through the new processes used to upload files. I'm on here from my laptop now, just figured I'd throw out fair warning.
BlackRoseOfThorns Posted January 17, 2015 Posted January 17, 2015 You know you don't have to download anything manualy yourself to get your pc infected. From time to time less protected sites might have malware in their pop up advertisment and banners. I highly doubt any mod on nexus could be infected. All the files are scanned before uploading. It must would have to be something new and higly advanced to slip through security. Or did you donload a file from forum section?
lofgren Posted January 17, 2015 Posted January 17, 2015 Nexus has had issues with malware in the past, which is why they beefed up their security. Even though they have made it safer, they remain a juicy target for malware because of the thousands of downloads that come from the site. It's not impossible that somebody managed to breach the new security, but I would definitely look for other causes first. If you can remember which files you downloaded, you should report them to admins who will check them out more thoroughly. But don't be surprised if it turns out you were mistaken about the origin of your problem.
AlduinWorldEater Posted January 18, 2015 Author Posted January 18, 2015 Which files did you download? I'm not even sure, I downloaded a bunch of stuff over the course of a couple of days. I lost track. You know you don't have to download anything manualy yourself to get your pc infected. From time to time less protected sites might have malware in their pop up advertisment and banners. I highly doubt any mod on nexus could be infected. All the files are scanned before uploading. It must would have to be something new and higly advanced to slip through security. Or did you donload a file from forum section? I don't know about new or highly-advanced, but it was fast-moving. Shut me completely down in just an hour or two. It didn't come from the forum section. I have a pop-up blocker in place, but I am aware that doesn't always mean anything. The only sites I ever use are facebook, the Nexus, YouTube, and a manga scan site. But I do acknowledge that it's entirely possible it had nothing to do with the Nexus. Nexus has had issues with malware in the past, which is why they beefed up their security. Even though they have made it safer, they remain a juicy target for malware because of the thousands of downloads that come from the site. If you can remember which files you downloaded, you should report them to admins who will check them out more thoroughly. But don't be surprised if it turns out you were mistaken about the origin of your problem. As I said, I'm not 100% sure that the Nexus is to blame at all, I just wanted to bring it to attention in case that was the source. I'd like to be able to keep someone else from suffering this too should the Nexus indeed be the cause, but at this point I'll probably never know. But again, I'm not sure at all that the infected file or data came from the Nexus.
Tamb0 Posted January 18, 2015 Posted January 18, 2015 ..."beep beep" bit when trying to boot. This would generally suggest that you've had some sort of hardware failure, not a virus. I'd start off with doing a full disk check, before moving on to a memory tester - http://pcsupport.about.com/od/toolsofthetrade/tp/memorytest.htm
saurusmaximus Posted January 18, 2015 Posted January 18, 2015 If you can log into the nexus on another computer, go to where you log in and click on "User Area" then click on "View Your Download History" over on the left side. That will give you what you downloaded most recently. Note down what files you downloaded in the past week or whatever, and send that list to the Admins

Also, see here for the exact meaning of the beep sounds: http://www.computerhope.com/beep.htmMight help you find the cause. Edited January 18, 2015 by BlackRampage
bben46 Posted January 18, 2015 Posted January 18, 2015 Can you boot using Linux from a DVD or USB?You may have to go to another computer to create a Linux troubleshooting DVD (or USB) Note: running Linux from a DVD will not do anything to your windows installation - it bypasses windows altogether and allows you to test the hardware and run a deep virus scan. I have been using the Kapersky Rescue disk as it's virus database seems to be updated more often than some of the others. http://support.kaspersky.com/viruses/rescuedisk
AlduinWorldEater Posted January 21, 2015 Author Posted January 21, 2015 I can happily report it's not the Nexus. Got to looking at the gaming rig, poor thing was just too old. Finally gave out on me. Hell, damn computer's from the early days of Vista. Going to figure out whether I want to spend my tax money on reviving and updating it or on getting a new computer altogether.
