And after looking at this thread and checking my post count rank for the first time in months, I'm surprised to see I'm still in 5th place overall, with the next person still over a thousand posts behind. And this is after months of barely posting out of disgust with Oblivion...

Either these forums are dead, or I really had no life. I think mostly the first, this place is a ghost town compared to the good old days.

It sounds like we are posting on these forums just for the post count and a spot on the top 10 list, and not for discussing, asking things, etc.

This also causes pointless messages to appear everywhere on the forums (not everyone does this of course). 'I'll just post one more time somewhere even though my post doesn't really mean much, so I'm the number one poster of today'.

I really don't care. If it were me I would probably remove the whole top 10 poster thing. But not the post count, because it's nice to know how much you've posted yourself. I wouldn't mind if it was private: Only your own post count visible.

I don't want people to see me as a great person because of the NUMBER of posts, I want them to see me as a great person because of what is WRITTEN in those posts.

I've said it once and i'll say it again: It's the quality, not the quantity of your posts that matters! ;)

I agree that quality is the most important thing. But the post count has it's place too. The spammy messages problem you speak of is understandable, but i't impossible to get a high post count through spam. With the post count penalty for spamming, plus the fact that anyone who tried would be striked and banned unless they settle down and become a contributing member of the community.

Most people with a post count of 200+ got it because they have a lot to say, or have helped lots of people.

Also, a high post count is a symbol of rank, and a reward for contribution. Of course quality matters, but you'll likely find anyone with posts of 1000+ has a good reason for getting there. With your own quality over quantity philosophy, you yourself are approaching that thousand mark. Why? Because you deserve it. And you are recognised on these forums as one of (if not the) authority on quests.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I always thought your high post count was a combination of active participation in many debates, great expertise in modding, and (former) moderator duties. You have a lot to say, and I think that, rather than either of your two reasons, are responsible for the high post count.

Also, Gamingsource may be kinda slow compared to some forums, but it is far from dead in my opinion. I like the slow atmosphere. I tried posting on newgrounds once, got into a long debate and left it til the next day, only when I went back it was buried 12 pages deep. I prefer a forum where topics don't get lost if not posted in for an hour or two.

I'm in no hurry to raise my own post count. The 500 mark is fast approaching and I still haven't thought of a custom title.

Well. Anyway, that's all I have to say. If you still think post count doesn't matter, then fair enough.

Peregrine is right though - it was once far more active. It's a lot easier to find things to post on when there are dozens of topics every day rather than five or six.

Oblivion's generic dullness doesn't help either - there's little there to be excited about whilst most players were still finding new quests and trinkets in Morrowind months after they started playing.

I remember back in the beginning of Morrowind Source there used to be an RPG system. Now that was open to abuse. Post counts are passe but if obsessive post-counters must be provided for they're better than rewarding frequent posters with stats.

Ah, but the RPG system was nothing compared to the Gold system way back when. Remember the Clone scandal?

I wasn't here back then. Tell us

I don't know much of the past of these forums. I know Peregrine was a moderator and now he isn't anymore. I'm not going to ask why, I've got my own theory. I wasn't there when it was still called MWsource or morrowind chronicles. I wasn't there before Morrowind's release, just after it's release or anything near that.

I found morrowind on the shelves in mid 2005, thinking it was a new game. I believed that for quite some time until I gave the box a closer look and saw it was three years old already! And after that I joined the forums.

And Warkirby, I guess you are right. People do look up to you a bit when you have been around here for a while. And yes you can't get a high post count with spam. Still, the uploaded files section has quite some spamming, because it's way too much for the moderators to check. Nothing too serious though, and if it does get that far the report button should do the trick. We (I) shouldn't complain, things are a hundred times worser on the official forums. Too big, too fast, too many people.

The authority on quests? I wouldn't say that. I started out with a quest tutorial too. My House of Clues mod for morrowind was just some scrolls with clues you had to follow, because I had no idea how the quest/dialogue system worked! I never really thought I would get this far with quest modding.

I like the slow pace here too. If you post on the official forums, your topic will be gone in no time, especially in the oblivion mod section. That's why I only go there to see the latest WIP's and releases.;)

Long story short, years ago there used to be a system where you could earn gold by posting, and spend it buying features (custom titles, negative post counts for enemies, etc). Someone found an exploit (involving a gold for taking the site quiz offer, if I remember right) that allowed you to get infinite gold. So the system was quickly scrapped.

Ask by PM if you really want to know, since I don't want to get banned I don't comment on that in public.

I asked by PM and you never responded. You responded to my first asking about your moderator status, but when I sent another asking why you were no longer a moderator, I got no reply.

Care to tell me now?

Basically he was being a jerk and scaring off the new comers. It's not what I wanted so I removed his status. That and his continuous religion bashing in the debate forums which inevitably lead to the banning of religious debates altogether despite numerous warnings.
