Moving forward, I won't be purchasing any more Bethesda products. Not even ESVI.

A line has to be drawn.

I thin the only way to end this is by making an oath that people can agree on. kicking anyone in the community out who will possibly violate others work by selling it and band together. trust me this is going south one modder who sold out cant even retract his mod valve has claimed it indefinitely in other words they stole it but its ironic because he stole it first. The guy was so selfish he was mad he could not retract his mod.... this means of course pulling it off everyone who paid for it's PC. He thought he was a victim well I doubt he would feel the same if beth or valve pulled skyrim or CK off his pc.

Artists create art because it makes them happy if others enjoy that are that is a bonus and always good knowing they could make another person feel something with their expression. if someone donates to their artistic expression that is another bonus but when you make art just for financial gain you are no longer an artist but a tool.

I agree commercial software has always hated mods most of the time the mods out shined the very game itself free software and mods where killing the commercial industry. make no mistake valve did not even do this for the money neither did bethesda they did this to end modding period. they simply gave the community the rope and they hung themselves with it. They knew the rules about paying for mods we all knew the rule about selling mods but all it took was some greed. and until there is strict action taken on behalf of those willing to remain free and removing the bad apples it will die. Mods will be about as active as open source gaming is.... because this is exactly what happened with the entire indie scene with anything it becomes big and about money and competition. You know, I just want to share this with the modders who are going to put their mods up for "sale".

Remember, when you sell something, you become a trader of sorts.

What you cannot guarantee is "buy my product because its a work in progress". Because there are things such as customer's rights.

If you sell something that's broken, expect a storm of poo going your way.

If you sell something that's not broken, expect NO POSITIVE advertisements coming your way. Because people buy products to use them, not to advertise them on your behalf.

If you sell something that's good, people MAY or MAY NOT talk about it. You're not entitled to being "advertised" just because you think you are.

But let's also get one thing very clear, especially those selling on SteamWorks and pulling their works on NexusMod: I think you're digging your own proverbial grave, in economic sense.

You sell a product for say, USD 10 *cough*, you get at most USD2.5. I heard its a lot in the USA, enough to buy a full meal? Not sure, but here's what.

That 2.5USD, you'll still need to fund for a PR or a HR personnel, because there's such a thing called as "customer service", and "post-sale service". Yeap. Unless I'm wrong, when you sell something, even in a 'curated bazaar' like Steam, its YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to provide customer service and post-sales service.

Let's see, you'll probably be swamped with "waaaa this is broken", or "waaa why this doesnt' look as good as in the picture? OMG you liar, you used some sort of magic / trickery waa waa waa".

You'll spend your time trying to calm the customers down. All with that meagre USD2.5

Meanwhile Steam and Bethesda earns USD7.5 without even as much batting and eyelid.

You make a product, but they parasitically earn from you, and yet you have to deal with the poo pile, you have to eat the dog food. Yourself. NOT WITH VALVE, NOT WITH BETHESDA.

Are you really sure you're getting compensated? I don't think so. Is this move an economically sensible move? I think its a GREAT move for VALVE and BETHESDA, but on your expense as a modder.

Then you'll get burnt out, and you'll blame the "community" for not understanding you. The problem is, the community does NOT have to understand you. Because you sold a product, and if I'm a customer, I don't care for your wellbeing. I only want the products I paid for comes in with ZERO PROBLEM, and WORKS RIGHT OFF THE BAT, no BETAs, no ALPHAs, nothing of the sort of "i'm going to beta test for you".

Just don't cry foul at the community that you tried to make money off.

I've been modding games for 15+ years. There have been many nights I was up till 3am creating content, and maintaining it for free. "Not your content"?.... I have to disagree with you.

on average i run my modded skyrim around 50 mods, its mostly the essentials ECE, retexures, character replacers, couple armor mods, and so on. Considering just the essentials, im literally using just 50 mods and the way pricing goes on Steam (aroundish a $1), i would be paying an extra 50 dollars or more with these mods. Later on of course i would be modding it heavily by then i would end up paying over $150 plus for mods. And i doubt anyone else wound want this.

Im completely against for paying mods. Some dont work they're supposed or break your game entirely. If modders want payment for their stuff of which i will never buy, its totally up to them but at least dont pull your stuff out of nexus or stop updating them because of this. Also its a complete BS that the pay-cut to the modders is 25%.

I'm very disappointed in this and the people lining up to support it.

We might as well pay people for fan-fiction and fan-art, since they spend hundreds of hours on it and are apparently all starving.

This will do a lot of damage to one of the best communities within gaming, and one of the only holdouts in this era of nickel-and-dime microtransactions and monetization of EVERYTHING. The last refuge of gaming freedom and artistic passion has finally been breached.

I think Bethesda will also lose some credibility over this.

I would respect a donation goal in order to continue working on the mod, but paid mods will only bring out the worst in people having to engage in piracy and other unspeakable things.

As others said here it is not a question if we're willing to pay or not but how we do it, you want to be paid for your work then do it the right way and not by destroying the only freedom we have left.
