Valve/Bethesda announce paid modding for Skyrim, more games to follow

Should someone be paid for investing hours upon hours on creating something that others enjoy? In my opinion yes.

But how they're doing this is wrong. The author should definitely be paid more than 25% per commission. It's like a painter and his paintings. The painter uses the tools that he has to create something aesthetic, beautiful, or with a powerful message. The modder uses the tools at his disposal to create something just as much impact in the world of gaming. What valve is doing is basically a tax on creativity. "We are going to take 75% of all your commissions. If your mod is not successful, well we still get to keep that $99 that your mod made if it ever gets that high. lolz." That's really messed up.

I believe in rewarding hard work of the individual or a team that has and respects their vision. What I don't believe in is sucking 75% of the money from the creators and saying it is okay. Valve didn't make the mod, they just made a "service" that allows modders to charge money. And yet they take 75%? Something is very wrong with that.

It just shows how lazy and accurate Bethesda is.
Number of bug fixes in USKP/UDGP/UDBP/UHRP is mind boggling.

For my part, if this is how Skyrim modding is really going, I will have to say goodbye to that game. Shame, after almost 3 years playing it. Modding is what made this game interesting, and enjoyable even after countless hours playing it. If things continue to go as it is, Nexus will close and so will a lot of others, except those who will allow pirated content (cough). But yeah, in my opinion, this is the beginning of the end of the modding community.
Just my 2 cents here.

I agree that this COULD be absolutely disastrous. Or it could be wonderful. Or somehow both at the same time.

Oh jeeze, if USKP goes on the sale team that's super controversial. For example, it is Bethesda's fault for releasing an incredibly buggy game. The people who are passionate about the game fixes their mistakes.

This is so greedy by valve and bethesda. I have no problem with mod developers getting a more direct way of getting money. I personally think expecting people to pay for mods is silly seeing as a 200 mod list could easily reach the hundreds of pounds by the way things are priced so far. But for valve to take a 75% cut with developers pretty much shows this is a money grab. Any mod developer that supports this is retarded.

Nivea, i understand this will kill the motivation of many skilled and renown modders like you.

So about the "Wet & Cold" mod on Steam - assuming you had actually agreed on it being posted there, how much would the included hoods from your "Winter is Coming" mod be worth?
And who would decide that?

This will destroy the modding scene if nothing is done to stop it.

Youtuber mod showcases will die as well as it will be expensive hobby now

Modding is an hobby...not a job...if bethesda cant make thir own games pretty i dont see why to buy em at all...if i even have to pay for mods...mods are like essential for skyrim...without its worthless...

The question is how many of the irate modders out there tonight who are unendorsing chesko and isako's mods out of spite (which I don't condone, but totally understand) will in turn unsubscribe from Brodual, Gopher, and all the other popular mod reviewers that they perceive as being advocates for charging a fee for untested alpha content? So far I've only seen a reaction by Gopher, who was being diplomatically cautious about the whole thing.

I fear (and I really do hope I'm wrong) that this will also have an adverse affect on the Youtube modding reviews community. I'm not sure how many reviewers will risk losing subscribers, traffic and revenue by reviewing paid mods. Only time will tell.
