jwoltz
Recently I posted a tech support topic desperatley seeking help with game freeze as I try to fast travel and/or simply walk into certain cells in oblivion. I have been playing for nearly a year and based on my description of the problem, I have been told (starting with Bethesda Tech Support) that it is a WIN 7 issue, game bloat issue, Ref ID Shivering Isles Bug issue, and just about every issue imaginable with still no solution. Recently as I googled for answers, I came across a series of web sites proporting to have a link to a WIN 7 Patch for Oblivion. It sounded fishy to me since I would have thought that if such a thing existed, a download would be everywhere including Tes Nexus, Elder Scrolls, etc., websites. When I attempted to download this "file" on each and every site, it always wound up a blind link or some other non-descript problem, I have been running Oblivion on my new computer with WIN 7 all this time without issue until this freeze problem suddenly developed. All you have to do to bypass the stupid UAC that was placed in Vista and up is to click compatibility tab in all your .exe files in the oblivion folder and set them all to run in WIN XP Service pack 2 mode. It works just fine that way so I don't think my freeze issue is a WIN7 Compatibility issue. Can anyone help me with either my problem OR answer whether or not a WIN7 Oblivion Patch even exists? Thank you.
Elsarian
Ok I have played Oblivion for a while now and never had these issues except for the freezing. But that was just every now and then thing. Now what I have noticed is your install. You have everything installed into the default directory path correct? Bad. Instead uninstall the game using this method http://www.tesnexus.com/articles/article.php?id=240 Then after doing all of that, install the game to a custom path. Personally, I use this File path Start/justin/My Oblivion that is exactly where the game is installed to and I have never had any issues from it. So just try that and see if the problem stops. If not, then I really do not know what to tell you my friend. I hope that some of this has helped in some small way :) -Elsarian

bben46
The only thing Bethesda will say is Oblivion does not support Win7 - when what they actually mean is Bethesda has not, and does not plan to do any testing of Oblivion on Win7, So they are not going to even try to support that combination. It does work fine on Win7, and as Elsarian said, it works better if you reinstall outside of the program files folders. I use C:\Games\Oblivion. And for Steam games you need to reinstall the steam client outside of the program files folders also - I use C:\Games\Steam. All of my games are installed to C:\Games\Game-name That makes them east to find. I do not recommend disabling UAC as that leaves a back door open for certain viruses. oldspice2625
BBen, would it be the same thing if I uninstalled oblivion and moved the steam folder to the desktop... I REALLY don't want to uninstall steam and have to reinstall both left 4 dead 2, which works absolutely fine, and oblivion again, I reinstalled oblivion once the steam folder was on the desktop... does that work as well? It literally takes hours upon hours to reinstall steam games... i'm trying to fix my own issue as well....
