RS13
And that's FO3 or Skyrim. Which makes FO4 not better or worse than the previous ones. Maybe a tad better, but to me it seems that people complaining over getting a Bethesda game are also taking toilet paper ads for hard facts. In short, buying into every heap of PR bulls*** being thrown their way. Yeah, I just don't think that's true. Maybe it's on par with FO3, but I think this is way worse than Oblivion or Skyrim. I think the dialogue's worse, the story's worse, having the factions tied into the main quest sucked, the perks are boring, overall the world is just feels less interesting than the TES games and almost every quest amounts to "kill the bad guys!*" Maybe Beth just cares more about TES than Fallout, but I feel like the big problem is that a lot of the things they tried just didn't work. IMO, the crafting system**, the dialogue, the removal of skills*** all fell flat. *Skyrim had that a bit, but not nearly so bad as here. Remember, skyrim had the thieves guild questline and many of the deadric quests don't require killing anyone--one just requires to find out all the crazy things you did while drunk!--and some of those that involve killing need not be resolved through killing. (Think of the nightcaller temple one and Mehrunes Dagon's quest.) Another that springs to mind is the one where you forge an ancient poem. You could also play match maker (sadly you had to in order to get married, iirc). Even when you did have to resolve the quest with violence, many gave you an option on who to kill. **When I say the crafting system, I don't mean the settlement system. I don't care for it, and I *HATE* that it's shoved into the main quest and manin quest of all the story DLCs, but that's not my gripe. My gripe is the "carry around a dozen fans because you need screws to build your mods" system. Fans are more valuable than mini nukes in this game. The whole thing made inventory management an absolute pain and forced you either play with vanilla items or to lose hours of your life trying to find a way haul six more fans back to your base. ***I don't like the removal of skills in the first place, but it could be done well enough that I wouldn't have gripe. The problem is that when perks are all there is, they all need to be really good. And there's a lot of fluff in that chart.
chucksteel
the removal of the S.P.E.C.I.A.L. system is also a big issue for me I don't even look forward to leveling in FO4.
Mavkiel
Yeah forgot about that. Also the lack of tying in perks into dialogue/quests. They addressed that somewhat in the dlcs, but it was still lacking compared to Fallout 3 or NV. For example, in new vegas you could use the medic perk to heal people, or various combat perks to train troops for a quest. Fallout 3, had similar little bits, like black widow adding in new dialogue options. All an all, the perk system felt like managing an excel spreadsheet. All of the fun stuff was stripped out in favor of get x% more damage with your weapon. Or allow you to build y item for your settlement.
chucksteel
I get Beth wanted to try something new but in my opinion it feel way short! You can't make a "Dumb Brute", "Wimpy Genius!", even an "Average Joe" because you can at any time dump points into your stats! To me this is no fun because there are no real choices or consequences. I just wait until I can dump points latter. Edit: and even if you could make a "Dumb Brute" char there is nothing to set them apart from the "Average Joe" in FO4. mkborgelt13
I don't hate (dislike) the voice protagonist what I HATE about the dialogue system is the fact that you get ATTACKED, interrupted and other NPC's voices can muffle/disrupt the main conversation. (The sound issue may just be on my end with crap speakers but the attacks mid sentence make me mad!) The ATTACKS destroy my IMMERSION! Had to use the word I HATE, I play for the story not realism if I wanted real I have a live that is more then real! I play games for an escape from reality. I had this exact problem with Skyrim, but not Fallout 4. So... maybe it's different depending on your speaker setup? Not sure, but I know exactly what you mean. RS13
All an all, the perk system felt like managing an excel spreadsheet. Everyone says skills got removed, but really I feel like they just turned skills into perks. Which means we really lost perks. TypeAlias07
My biggest problem is the lack of depth in quests. Most of them are too linear and don't feel meaningful. They also don't take advantage of all of the game mechanics. I believe in FNV I was able to use pickpocketing in a few quests. There's honestly not any reason at all to pickpocket in FO4. It's a fun game and has a better feel than any other fallout game, but I think Bethesda relied too much on that and what you end up with is a looonng series of "go kill an interior full of enemies". EveningTide
Well they blew their whole load on interiors, the damn power armor, and workshops. So naturally they will shoe-horn you into doing things that utilize them in some way.

But to repeat. FNV was Obsidian. They made a bit more of the quests and probably would have elaborated further if Bethesda hadn't stepped on their toes for early release. I challenge you all to point out non linear and meaningful quests in any previous Bethesda game. I haven't played them all, but I played them all since Morrowind, which is a 14 years period. So, yes, I don't understand the hate, since Bethesda always pulled more or less the same tricks. As I said before, I hesitated a bit before buying FO4, but when I bought it I was aware of getting yet another Bethesda game. And that's what I got. Add to this the knowledge of a fully voiced game and I knew very well that I would get limited dialogue options. It's not rocket science, actually. Only observation and not buying into the prerelease PR hype.
tartarsauce2
wasn't morrowind non-linear somewhat?a lot of the games appear to have linear main quests, but these are designed MORE to bring you to new and interesting places than to keep you on a rail you purposefully have to jump off the rail of and run as far from it as you can to get interesting areas, granted the main quest takes you around the areas but there's very little in the way of interesting pointer or marker quests that tell you of some of the more neat places (which are also fully discoverable on their own like usual)
