Story rantings, sorry

What makes you say that?

Anyone hardly said anything good about it, it made people angry.

A whole lot of people loved having a voiced protagonist, you just don't hear the people who got what they wanted complaining as much... well, because you don't usually complain when you win.

I've always wanted to work someplace like Bioware and do writing, Bethesda giving me a poor mans version of Mass Effect that I can actually mod is like waking up Christmas morning when you are 10 years old and getting an N64 and a puppy...

No tears shed over here.

So you are bioware player? Makes sense it hardly bothering you.

BGS are looking for quest writers, but you need to know at least one coding language and know the CK/GECK.

We shall see how my mod goes whether or not I want to pursue a job working on videogames. I have never actually applied anywhere besides Bioware, and that was as a 3d modeler with my 3Ds Max and Unreal 3 work. Never got a call back. I've got a few coding languages I can use.

Right now I have a nice job only working 30 hours a week, so I will be making this mod to see if my ideas are really as good as I think they are, or if I am just a silly dreamer. Ideas are worth nothing until you can implement them, so that is what I am doing.

still support Bethesda, but they are probably planning to do a voiced protagonist from now on.

I be surprised if they didn't expect the backlash. I feel like the voice is an attempt to make the game easier for consumption by new, young, and casual gamers, which seems to be every publishers priority, regardless of adult themes. FO4 is selling really well so I'm betting they at the office think it was the right move.

I'm pretty cynical about the industry right now. I've only ever been little more than a casual gamer, but it's an important hobby to me. Here's a list of my favorite past franchises to see where cynicism comes from

Final Fantasy

Call of Duty

Battlefield

Command & Conquer

Warcraft

Assassin's Creed

Silent Hill

And of course Fallout&Elder Scrolls

It seems more like "Let risk it guys, who knows?" and it was done to improve story telling.

Just because a game sells well, doesn't mean it a good game mostly. It up to good marketing 80% of the time, and Beth did that in an awesome way this time around. One of the best markting I have seen.

Nah, not every dev. There is fromsoftware, Larian Studios and others who make more complex games. It up to what game you want to make and sell.

Fair points. Hopefully you're right and they respond to the criticism. I'm just tired of seeing my favorite franchises turn into mush. Not that Fallout 4 has gone that far, at all.

On another note, is there any hope for Obsidian to make another Fallout. I don't think they would add a voice, making it more likely for Bethesda to let go of it moving forward. If it was more of a "let's just try it" type of thing, I'm all for experiementation, I just hope they don't worry about the money too much. Their IP's are great, games are unique, and their not amateurs. The money will come regardless.

And I agree the marketing was great. It was also cool to hear about it so close to release.

I think the story is too strong for an open/sandbox world. When your kid gets kidnapped, you'd need a VERY good reason to get side tracked and go look for Giddy Up Buttercup Spare Parts. But there isn't. It would've made a better game I think if we had been able to find Shaun very early already, like, in Diamond City, as a teenage foster child with some loving foster parents, so we'd get to make a sensible choice to just leave him there and get on with our seperate lives. It could still serve as a hook then to find out about the Institute, but would also have taken the pressure away of finding who should be the most important person left in your life.

Would've been even better if they hadn't used the stolen child theme at all, it's more suited to linear storylines than to open world design anyway.
