Am I missing something about Laser Weapons?

People have complained that the laser rifles in FO4 have recoil when they shouldn't, because the theoretical nature of laser and photon-beam weapons supposedly doesn't allow for it. I'm not going to pretend to understand light physics entirely, but basically, photons don't exert force, so the weapons should not have recoil.

Honestly, I could care less, cause I love the laser weapons in FO4. They look and sound awesome. What does bother me is that each Fusion Cell is supposedly a single projectile, yet the loading animations and general weapon behavior treat Fusion Cells more like a traditional firearm magazine.

You pick up a Fusion Cell, load it into your weapon like a gun clip, and yet when you fire, your total Fusion Cell count drops. I feel like each Fusion Cell picked up should represent a potential bundle of projectiles subject to change based on the weapon-attachment's efficiency with the Fusion Cell's payload.

Perhaps fusions cells are sort of like batteries, not unlike Fusion Cores but instead of remaining partially full the remaining energy within each Fusion Cell is automatically combined (offscreen).

But yes, it does not seem to make sense without some complicated explanation.

Personally I don't have a problem with the supposed "recoil" of laser weapons. Such weaponry has never been successfully employed in our world in hand-held form that was capable of such firepower so maybe there is some unknown element in such a design that would cause possible recoil.

You don't really need to understand the complex physics side of things. It's easy to see for yourself with a practical experiment.

Get a flashlight and turn it on, you'll see that it doesn't have any force back against your hand from shooting the beam of light forwards.

Anyway, I do agree with your main point there, that the animations don't seem to match up correctly. I'd never noticed that before (although now that you've mentioned it I'll never be able to ignore it again).

Recoil could be reasoned away by discharged fusion cell via mechanical means.

Such as?

Light has no mass. Emitting light doesn't require a mechanical action. Have you ever felt recoil from turning on a laser pointer? Did it require a mechanical action?

Beth put recoil in there to keep accuracy/fire rate balanced, otherwise if they did similar or more damage as a ballistic weapon but with no recoil, they'd be super OP and there wouldn't be any challenge. But, the funny part is if laser weapons ever become a reality, that's pretty much how it'll be...point and click and just about anyone will be able to fire one accurately.

Did you even read the post?

They could balance them by having them overheat, those things would get pretty hot under heavy use.
