awesomeness287
I tried that. It did nothing. Same s*** it did before. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRD.Anyway, there's some problem with the damn thing, I should probably just install from Steam.Sorry to waste your time.
ducksternator
I followed the instructions to the letter and sure enough when I got back into steam - instead of installing via the disc it begins to download. I've a fast internet connection, but I flat out refuse to use my download quota for this. I purchased the game instore and it is apparently contained on the disc - yet I cannot access it and I'm forced to download it? I'm very angry that someone could think this is an acceptable way to distribute a game.
Cryptoanarchist
Another big thanks to the OP. I had to go find my details buried in an inbox of spam to log in, far more effort than I'd normally go to. I'd just bought a new PC for the latest games and my internet connection is saturated installing my library so I just clicked the autorun on the disk. It fired up steam and began setting up the game's cache. After half an hour (and multiple attempts) I decided to google and came here. Without this, it would have happily "prepared the cache" files for 2-3 days (and prevented me doing anything with steam) without even telling me it was downloading. Sometimes the mind boggles at how badly these things are put in place, someone deserves a kick up the ass for wasting my morning... But anyway, thanks again for saving me such a headache. Darkwizzie
Let's just say that if I had to download the whole game on my internet connection, that would be utterly asinine. If not for this, I'd find it very ironic that in the quest to find an offline RPG game, I found Skyrim, in which I had to download to play. Dodged a bullet and then some! :psyduck: Edited November 28, 2011 by Darkwizzie
maboru
I really don't understand all the problems. When I first installed the game I opened my Steam account then went to my DVD and double-clicked Setup. It took me to my already opened Steam account to enter my product key then simply loaded from the disk, the screen even said "Loading From Disk" then Steam downloaded the Day 1 patch. Then I started to play the game. Less than 15 mins. start to finish. (Of course I haven't been online to Steam since then since I always play offline.) energycoat
i used this trick but all its doing is scanning for steam games updates. is that normal?
lexonamy
Please help! I followed the instructions, and I believe the game has been installed. But when I click play the little box pops up, the name bar says it is updating Skyrim, and that the game is ready to play in approximately 1 hour 43 minutes. As it orignally said 1 hour 5 minutes, 30 minutes ago, i'm not impressed. I don't understand why I have to wait to just play the game? I tried going offline but apparently I am not yet able to play it offline?Have I done something wrong?
SirGalahad
What a load of steaming crap. The game won't install off the disc by default; Steam installs, then forces an Internet download of the entire game--even though it's already on the damn disc. This can stretch your installation out to an hour or more, instead of mere minutes. Apparently, this happens if you have Steam already installed on your system, or if you've ever installed Steam, as it can never be fully removed, because it hides parts of itself across your system and continues to operate like a computer virus. I just found this out the hard way. We had the very common problem of Steam refusing to start the game, the perennial "Preparing to launch...." message with no launching in sight. So I deleted the ClientRegistry.blob file, only I forgot to exit Steam this time (I had to do this a couple weeks back, too). This appeared to cause all manner of problems with the game performance. I ended up uninstalling the game and Steam (although nothing short of reformatting your hard drive actually uninstalls Steam). When trying to install the game again, I was horrified to see it would take nearly an hour, and that the game was actually downloading from the Internet, instead of installing directly from the disc. Now I'm waiting and waiting and waiting for the game to finish downloading and sucking up my bandwidth. This is what I get for paying for the game....
