What is the point in a warhammer?

i'm currently playing a 2-handed warrior atm. My original desire was to have one of each weapon type - greatsword, battleaxe, warhammer

but i'm finding the warhammer to be nigh useless. the difference in damage between the three is miniscule, and the warhammer is ridiculously slow to swing, making it far weaker than a sword overall. in addition it weighs a ton and wastes space in my inventory.

There's a few things to consider:

Swords - swing faster but do less damage. The perk gives +10/20/30% Critical chance.

Axes - middle of the road, do slightly more damage but swing slower. The perk gives bonus bleed damage

Warhammer - slowest to swing but most damage per swing (does not mean best dps mind you). The perk makes you ignore 25/50/75% of the targets armor.

So is the warhammer useless? *shrugs* some people prefer faster weapons with critical hit chance, some prefer slow hitters that bypass armor to deal more damage. All three weapons should be viable, just depends on what you prefer imo.

I believe the point is on the back end of the war hammers :P

On a serious note. It's the first weapon I used with my first character. Oddly enough I used it for sneaky stealth kills. As it had the most damage per hit, I figured thats what it was all about, doing all the damage you could with that first swing, and try to one hit them. I didn't know at the time that sneak hits with a dagger from behind were instakills.

No it doesn't. that's my point!

Warhammers swing a LOT slower than greatswords, but only do a tiny amount more damage. they cripple themselves in DPS for it.

The perk makes you ignore 25/50/75% of the targets armor.

however i forgot about this. could make it very useful against heavily armored enemies. i was wanting to avoid specialisation but i might just level that perk a little.

Sorry, that was a typo - I meant to say "doesn't mean best dps" or "does not mean best dps". I've fixed my post now.

Don't hammers normally do more damage against shield and armour?

That would be due to the higher base damage - higher base damage means more damage gets past the mitigation that shields and armor provides. I don't believe that warhammers/hammers have an inherent/hidden special ability to do extra damage vs shields and armor apart from higher base damage and the perk which allows you to bypass armor mitigation.

we can do the math to find out. :)

The base reach and animation multiplier (speed) for weapons:

1 handers

Daggers

Reach: 0.7

Speed: 1.3

Sword

Reach: 1

Speed: 1

Maces

Reach: 1

Speed: 0.8

Axes

Reach: 1

Speed: 0.9

2 handers

Great Swords

Reach: 1.3

Speed: 0.7

BattleAxes

Reach: 1.3

Speed: 0.7

Warhammers

Reach: 1.3

Speed: 0.6

So now you know the Speed multiplier for warhammers vs greatswords...Someone post the Damage rating of each and then we can work out a rough dps difference. (I don't think there will be much in it tbh, but we shall see.
